Chapter 48: This venerable’s first kiss

Xiang Yu’s eyes seriously scanned the characters, his fingers tracing the intricate patterns on the pages. The room was silent, save for the occasional rustle of paper and the noise from the market stalls outside. Just when the book was getting intriguing, he was interrupted by the man’s laboured breathing. "Why don’t you breathe quietly," he said in annoyance.

As though he had heard him the man fell silent but this silence didn’t last long. His heavy breathing intensified with the interval between each breath shorter and shorter. Xiang Yu tried to focus, but the sound was like a persistent insect buzzing in his ear. He clenched his jaw, determined to ignore it. This wasn’t his problem.

But the breathing grew louder, more erratic. With a frustrated growl, he slammed the book shut, the sound echoing through the room. He stood up, his chair scraping against the floor, and glared at the man lying on the bed. The urge to silence him was so overwhelming. He glanced at the quilt the temptation growing stronger. He could easily suffocate him with it and end the noise once and for all.

But as he approached, his hands froze. The man was drenched in sweat, his face contorted. Xiang Yu’s eyes narrowed. This had to be the result of the pill he had given him. He cursed under his breath, turning to search for an antidote. If he dies the twins might blame him and he wouldn’t hear the end of it for the rest of his life.

Just as he was about to leave, something caught his eye. A thin string peeked out from beneath the man’s lapel. Xiang Yu’s heart skipped a beat. He knew that string. He had picked it himself when he bought his mother that jade pendant.

He should have known that this bastard was the one who robbed his pendant. Recalling what happened yesterday when he got too close to him he carefully kept his distance as he crouched down beside the bed. He tugged at the string, pulling it free. As expected, a jade pendant emerged, glinting in the soft light.

Xiang Yu’s breath hitched. The pendant was unmistakably his. His fingers tightened around it, memories of his mother calling him a thief flooding back. "You basta-!" Just as he let out a curse, a vice-like grip seized his arm. Before he could react, he was yanked down with surprising force. His entire body went weak, a rare look of panic flashing in his eyes, now glowing a fierce scarlet.

The man, still in a coma, displayed an unnatural strength. He pulled Xiang Yu down, and as this venerable one tried to wrench himself free, they both tumbled to the ground. They rolled across the floor, the man’s grip unyielding. In a swift, unexpected move, the man grabbed the back of Xiang Yu’s neck and pressed his lips against the demon king’s.

Xiang Yu’s eyes widened in shock, his body going numb. For a moment, he was frozen, unable to process what was happening. Then, rage surged through him. With a snarl, he bit down hard on the man’s lip, tasting blood as he struggled to free himself.

Just then, the door to the room burst open. Lian and Mei stood in the doorway, their eyes wide with shock at the scene before them. Xiang Yu was entangled with the comatose man, his eyes blazing while their lips were plastered together. This was a sight they had never expected to see.

Xiang Yu’s heart pounded in his ear as he mustered the strength to push the man away. Blood from the man’s split lip stained his. He staggered to his feet, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, and spat in disgust. Thinking of his first kiss that had been stolen in such a vile manner it ignited a fiery rage within him.

With a growl, Xiang Yu kicked the man twice, venting his anger. The man lay motionless, still in a coma, oblivious to the storm he had unleashed. His chest heaved with fury, his eyes glowing a menacing scarlet.

The twins, Lian and Mei, stood in the doorway, their eyes wide with shock. They exchanged puzzled glances, whispering to each other.

"Sister, can two men kiss?" Lian asked, her voice barely audible.

Mei shrugged. "He has lips and Master has lips... They both have lips, so maybe two men can kiss." The two of them fell silent for a while trying to digest this new development. Now it made sense why their master never like the beautiful women. It turns out they had the wrong gender.

After a while Lian’s brow furrowed. "Can a man be a mother too?"

Mei shrugged again, her expression equally confused. Xiang Yu, having stopped his assault staggered back and turned to them with a glare. "What are you two talking about?" he demanded, his voice dripping with irritation.

The twins stiffened, forcing awkward smiles. "Nothing, Master," they replied in unison.

They quickly changed the subject. "What umm... what happened here, Master?" Mei asked, her eyes darting to the unconscious man lying on his side. They couldn’t wait to hear the explanation for this.

Xiang Yu took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. "I gave him the life pill, but he started acting up," he explained, his voice still tinged with anger.

Lian’s eyes widened. "Which bottle did you take it from, Master?"

Xiang Yu pointed to a white porcelain bottle on the table. Lian let out an awkward laugh. "Oh silly Master, that’s um... not the life pill. That’s a love potion."

Xiang Yu’s eyes narrowed. He glanced at the man having recalled feeling something poking him. He gritted his teeth while massaging his temple. That was not a love potion. Whoever sold it to her lied. That was an aphrodisiac. Exasperated he asked, "Why do you even have such a thing?"

Lian chuckled nervously. "It was for you to find a wife."

Xiang Yu, "???"

"Do I look like I need a wife? Do I seem that lonely to you that you wanted to find me a wife?" he asked struggling to restrain his anger. Was this why they insisted on coming to this city? Is that why they had been acting weird last night?

"Yes!" yelled Mei

"Nooo," said Lian

They answered at the same time. Their twin telepathy was obviously broken. They glanced at each other before speaking in unison.

"No," said Mei.

"Yes," said Lian.

Xiang Yu, "..."
