Chapter 46: Eating a feast

Xiang Yu’s steps were steady as he carried the unconscious man through the city gates. The weight on his back was nothing compared to the burden of the stares and whispers behind him. He had so much attention on him before but he had never had this many women staring at him with those intense eyes. He didn’t have to look back to know that they were looking at him. He could feel their burning gazes burrowing into his skin. They gave him the same feeling as predators lurking in the dark watching their prey.

When they entered the city, it was chaotic with people frantically searching for their missing daughters and wives. Cries of desperation filled the air, mingling with the clamor of hurried footsteps and anxious voices. When they saw Xiang Yu and a group of women emerging from the shadows, their faces pale and eyes wide with anxiety, calm seemed to be momentarily restored.

As soon as they saw their loved ones, they ran forward calling out with anxiety in their voices. They checked them for injuries before embracing them tightly. The women, still dazed, began to explain how they had been caught in a trance and woke up in an old, decrepit house in the woods. They spoke of Xiang Yu, the mysterious savior who had appeared out of nowhere. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

"He saved us," one of the women said, her voice trembling. The crowd turned to him, their eyes filled with gratitude and awe. They had mistaken him for an immortal and because his robes were unfamiliar and unassociated with any known sects they assumed that he was a rogue cultivator. They began to thank him, calling him a young hero, but Xiang Yu waved them off, his expression one of irritation. "I don’t need your thanks," he muttered. "I just need somewhere to put this man down."

An inn owner, whose daughter had been among the rescued, stepped forward. "You can use my inn," he offered. "It’s the least I can do for the young hero after saving my daughter. You can stay for free."

Xiang Yu nodded curtly and followed the inn owner to a modest inn in the center of the city. He was led upstairs to a double room. Without a second thought, he tossed the unconscious man onto the bed, his body landing with a thud. The twins standing at the doorway, winced at the sight. They exchanged glances, their eyes pleading as they looked at Xiang Yu. "What?" Xiang Yu snapped, his frustration evident. Mei, her eyes wide and imploring, spoke up.

"He looks so uncomfortable. Master, can you... can you lay him down properly?" Xiang Yu let out an exasperated sigh but relented. He walked over to the bed, adjusting the man’s sleeping position with rough but careful hands. He pulled the covers over the man, ensuring he was properly tucked in. The twins smiled, their relief palpable.

"There," he said, stepping back. "Satisfied?"

The pair of troublemakers nodded, and he turned away, sitting on the bed at the opposite side of the room. He sighed as he lay on the bed his arms sprawled lifelessly. He lay there his eyes half-closed, listening to Lian and Mei as they examined the unconscious man. The man’s luxurious white robe shimmered under the candlelight, and the twins couldn’t resist poking his face, arguing whether he was truly dead.

"He’s not breathing. Let’s preserve him," Lian whispered, her finger prodding his cheek.

"Maybe he’s just in a deep sleep," Mei countered, her eyes narrowing in suspicion. Their debate was interrupted when Mei’s gaze fell upon a golden token on the man’s chest. The symbol of the sun gleamed brightly, catching the light. "Look at this," she said, holding it up for Lian to see.

They turned to their master who was lying down like a salted fish. "Master, do you know which sect this belongs to?" Lian asked, her voice tinged with curiosity.

Xiang Yu sat up, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the token. The symbol was unfamiliar to him. He knew all sects in the mortal realm and their symbols but he had never seen this token before. "I don’t recognize it," he admitted. "Ask around tomorrow and see if anyone knows."

The twins nodded in agreement just as a knock echoed through the room. The innkeeper’s daughter entered, her eyes lingering on Xiang Yu. She was the young woman who had raised her hand earlier asking more about him. Her interest then was only to pass time but now she wanted to be his madam even if he was poor.

"Dinner is ready," she announced, her voice soft and inviting. She had persuaded her father to let her deliver the message, hoping for a chance to speak to him.

Xiang Yu stood up and stretched his muscles. "Let’s go and eat," he said, heading for the door.

The twins hesitated, glancing back at the unconscious man. "Shouldn’t we stay with him?" Mei asked, worry etched on her face.

Xiang Yu casually waved off their concern. "If the food runs out, don’t blame me," he said, already stepping into the hallway. He had endured months of the chef’s bland dishes in the demon realm thus he could eat the entire pantry if he could

Reluctantly, the twins followed, their worries momentarily forgotten as the aroma of food wafted through the air. The innkeeper’s daughter led them to the dining area, her eyes never straying far from Xiang Yu. She showed them to a table laden with an impressive array of dishes.

Xiang Yu hadn’t expected such a feast. It turns out the city folk had brought food to the inn to thank him for saving their daughters and wives. Xiang Yu wasn’t at all polite. He sat down and began to eat, savoring the juicy roasted duck. He thought he was eating fast but it turns out he was no match to the twins sitting across from him. They were eating even faster than he was, their eyes wide with delight.
