Chapter 439: A day of surprises (1)

After a chaotic night with the knights passing through the house to collect their dinner, a new day came over the border.

Annalise, Heidi, Siena, and Giselle woke up early to get dressed for a day of walking around while Rafael got up early to find where he would take Annalise tonight.

Unfortunately, Phillip had wanted to speak to Rafael about nothing after dinner and kept him busy so Rafael was unable to meet with Annalise later in the night. It gave him a little more time to plan how he was going to propose to her.

"Where are you going to do it?" Rafael heard Phillip’s voice from behind him.

At first, Rafael liked that Phillip was a little bit more welcoming of him this time around, but now it was starting to feel like he was being stalked. If Annalise wasn’t around, Phillip wouldn’t leave him alone.

"I do not know yet," Rafael replied, turning around to face Phillip.

"What do you mean you don’t know? You had a long night to think about it. Do you need to use my house since you don’t have one?" Phillip asked.

Rafael didn’t miss the jab Phillip threw in there. How was he to have a house at the border for him and Annalise when this was his second time here? He doubted that if he asked to buy any of the empty homes here, Phillip would let him.

"The new manor will be going up soon. She won’t be without a roof over her head for long," Rafael replied, turning away from Phillip and hoping the man would disappear.

"Normally, it’d be best to get the house first and then propose. Especially when you’re going to be leaving my daughter soon, but I will let it slide for now. Have you bought what you are going to use to decorate where you plan to propose to her?" Phillip asked, willing to offer his time to help Rafael.

Phillip was doing this because Annalise deserved something good she would always remember. Not to make Rafael look good.

"There is nothing to buy-"

"What do you mean there is nothing to buy?" Phillip yelled, angered that Rafael didn’t seem to be putting much thought into this. He didn’t see the knights carrying around anything special to be used for a proposal so that meant Rafael only had a ring. "I told you to treat my daughter as you would other women. Even though you think she wouldn’t want flowers, it is good to have them around."

"Annalise isn’t like other women. I will do what I think Annalise will enjoy. I would appreciate it if you leave me to do this by myself. It concerns only me and Annalise," Rafael said, being respectful in saying that Phillip should now go on his way.

"This is my only child. I have to make sure that it is perfect so at least tell me about your plans. My wife wants to know too," Phillip muttered.

He might have made the mistake of letting it slip to Celine that Rafael was planning on proposing. Now she was impatient and wanted every single detail to be passed back to her. He was in luck that Rafael was planning on proposing tonight so he could get Celine off his back.

"It’s a secret," Rafael said, keeping to being the only one knowing his plans so nothing would be ruined.

If not for wanting to be respectful and ask for Phillip’s permission, he would have kept his proposal to himself so that there was a lower chance of Annalise finding out about what was going to happen tonight.

Rafael was almost tempted to go to Celine and have her lock her husband away somewhere tonight so he would be out of the way.

Rafael sighed because Phillip didn’t make any attempt to move out of the way. "If you want to help, I need to find somewhere Annalise and I won’t be disturbed when I propose. I will need a few lanterns if it is dark."

"I know a good place where I can make off-limits for the night. I’ll do my daughter a favour by getting some food or drinks. You are smart to come to me for help," Phillip said, ready to take over in decorating.

Decorating was something he didn’t know much about, but as he walked through the town when his eyes would go to something surely ideas would follow.

"I didn’t put you in charge of decorating. Just..." Rafael trailed off as Phillip was already halfway out the door when he turned back around to face him.

Rather than try to stop whatever Phillip was planning, Rafael was going to use this to distract Phillip so he could continue with what he had planned. In the end, he might not go with what Phillip picked because he didn’t trust what Phillip put together would go with what he planned.

Rafael knew that Annalise disliked flowers. Feared them because they made her skin itch. He hadn’t thought of having music played because Annalise had not enjoyed the ball or seemed to care for dancing. He wasn’t going to try anything new the night he was proposing to her.

Rafael wanted to stick to what Annalise loved to make it memorable. Somewhat funny even. All he needed was something to bring light to where he was going to take her, the ring, food, drinks, armour, and swords.

It was a crazy idea, but knowing Annalise, she was going to enjoy it. He only needed a moment to get what he needed and start putting it all together.

Annalise should be out with Siena and the other women so he had to stay clear of her.

Rafael placed the small box with the ring in his pockets, always wanting it with him so he would not overthink someone might take it up and then misplace it.

As Rafael stepped out the door of the house Phillip was kind enough to offer the knights, he heard a few footsteps behind him. He had succeeded in getting rid of Phillip but he had forgotten that there were others acting like they had nothing to do if they were not around him. Others who were going to add more attention he did not need.

"Leave me," Rafael ordered the knights behind him.

"We can’t. You need to give us something to do to help with your proposal. You will get everything prepared faster if you allow us to help you," Logan said, stepping forward to be the one to convince Rafael. "It’s not like we have something better to do when we are one step closer to officially having a lady of the manor. Tell us what you need, Rafael."

"Very well," Rafael agreed since he would only waste time if he stood around trying to send them away. He could use their help to gather what he needed while he would go off to find the best spot.

Rafael turned to the knights to hand them some money they might be able to use here and if they couldn’t, he had brought jewels to be used instead. "I need food, drinks, armour-"

"Armour!?" Logan exclaimed, confused by a proposal needing armour. "Are you planning to get her to spend the rest of her life with you or kill her? Sorry," he apologised, taking a step back. "I should have known to keep my mouth shut on a day like this. Armour it is!"
