Chapter 414: Like looking into a mirror (1)

"So, what is it like at the border?" Alessandra asked.

They had moved on from sitting down to talk to walking around now that the men were back. Alessandra couldn’t hold back her curiosity about the border.

"It is different from the life you have here, but still similar in a few ways. Everything here is big and sparkles while at home is more simple. We aren’t savages like the rumours say. We carry on with our days like any other town. There is so much land to run around and explore. Plenty of land for you to never get bored," Annalise answered, now finding herself missing home. "There aren’t many rules there. Not much judging."

She couldn’t wait for dealing with the truce to be over to go back home to see her family. Annalise had sent letters to her parents, but it wasn’t easy to get a response because of how far the letters had to go and the border guards would not want to pass the letters to her father.

"It sounds lovely. I would love to go somewhere new to explore and be away from all the judgement here. It is unfortunate that I cannot go because I am pregnant and we are trying to limit how much I go around," Alessandra said, watching Edgar occasionally look back to see if she was alright.

Alessandra wanted to be at home to be away from anyone asking about her stepmother and having to deal with her mother’s return which was nothing like she imagined it would be.

"There won’t be anyone to bother you if you travel with us. Your baby will be fine, but you can always join us to visit the border when you want. We’ll be building up a town as long as the truce goes well. I will invite you for a gathering if you are still open to seeing what near the border is like," Annalise said, looking forward to Alessandra visiting.

So far she liked the duchess and after hearing a few tales about her past, there were some people Annalise wanted to get rid of, but Edgar was already taking care of it. Annalise liked hearing about Edagr’s no-nonsense attitude.

Alessandra clapped her hands, looking forward to an invitation to the border. She and Edagar were looking for places to potentially move to so she would count the border as a place they should consider.

All Alessandra wanted to do was get far out of Lockwood to somewhere she could freely walk around without anyone knowing about all her family drama up to this point.

"You make me want to pack my things and move right away. I am continuing to have a few family issues right now so a trip to the border would be nice to get away from everyone. From my mother who is recently back in my life and Edgar’s grandmother who doesn’t know when to quit. What do you do when the people around you are ruining your peace, Annalise?" Alessandra asked, wanting some fresh ideas.

"Normally, I hit them. Kill them if they are trying to make my life hell, but that wouldn’t suit you. Other times I tell them that I want them to be far away from me. Then if they don’t listen, I scare them away. Use your husband to scare them," Annalise suggested.

When Edgar wasn’t next to Alessandra, he didn’t look like someone you should walk up to.

Annalise gazed at Rafael walking in front of her. She loved listening to him laugh from time to time at something the duke or king said.

"I normally use Edgar to scare off everyone, but I will need some new tricks in the future. What are they up to now?" Alessandra wondered because Edgar and Tobias went off the path they were walking on. "It seems like our men have special plans. Hopefully, it will not be a fight."

Annalise hoped it was a fight for her to see all three men fighting at once.

The group wandered off from the halls to a large garden.

"If you don’t stop annoying me, you will find yourself drenched in water from the ponds," Annalise heard Edgar say most likely to the king. She noticed that he was rarely annoyed with Rafael because Rafael was the quiet one of the group.

"Rafael will be my knight in armour to protect me from you," Tobias said, moving closer to Rafael for protection.

"I am not on duty at the moment or wearing armour," Rafael said, stepping to the side to get away from Tobias. He turned around to check on Annalise and found her still speaking with Alessandra.

The two were getting along well so he didn’t need to worry about Annalise feeling out of place. It was good to see her starting a friendship with Edgar’s wife because Edgar was always going to be around so their partners should have some sort of relationship. It would have been awkward if Annalise and Alessandra didn’t get along.

"See, this is why I don’t like when you two are around each other. Edgar is a bad influence on you, Rafael. Honestly, I’m a bit worried about how his children will turn out with his attitude. Hey!" Tobias yelled, surprised by Edgar’s attempt to lift him.

There was a pond nearby and Tobias had a feeling he might be going in it.

"Back down," Tobias ordered the guards. He was merely playing with Edgar so there wasn’t any danger for them to try to save him.

Edgar might throw him in the pond, but Tobias would just laugh it off and then pull Edgar and Rafael down with him. It wasn’t every day that he had the two in the palace so he didn’t mind acting like a child for this one day.

"Edgar, please do not lift the king," Alessandra said, picking up her pace to reach the men before Edgar could successfully lift Tobias off the ground.

"When will they stop acting like children?" Hazel questioned, staying back because Tobias had it coming. He was laughing and trying to be the one to lift Edgar so she wasn’t concerned for him. "So Eleanor, you were telling me about what happened with Reed."

Annalise followed Alessandra to go to the men. After hearing his wife call for him, Edgar decided to put Tobias down. It wasn’t fun when Tobias wanted to be picked up. He’d try again when Alessandra wasn’t around and Tobias wasn’t expecting it.

"You wouldn’t have been able to throw me anyway," Tobias said, further poking at Edgar to get a rise out of him. "You need to train some more instead of being by Alessandra’s side all the time. Come to the palace and-"

"I would rather ride for days out of town to Rafael’s manor to train with him than come here for you to annoy me. And I can lift you. You’re the one who’s been on your ass all day and not training," said Edgar.

"I can take you, Edgar. Rafael, who do you think is the better fighter between me and Edgar? Don’t be afraid to say me because Edgar is here with us. He’ll get over it," Tobias said, confident that he would be picked.

Like in their youth, Rafael was not going to get involved in Tobias and Edgar being competitive. "Ask someone else," Rafael answered and then left the two return to Annalise’s side.

"You are acting as if I asked you to pick between Annalise and your mother. Oh, Annalise!" Tobias called, deciding to ask her instead of Rafael. She had a background in fighting so she should be able to tell with one look who might be better. "Who do you think might be the better fighter? Me or Edgar?"

Annalise looked back and forth between Tobias and Edgar. "It is hard to say. You should get some sticks to play fight with and then I can make a decision," she proposed. "I do know who looks like they scare easily," she added, staring at Tobias.

Edgar smiled as she had sense to her to know the man Tobias was.
