"How did we get here?" Alessandra questioned Rafael who sat behind her. "I will try to stop Edgar before he does something to worry you."

Rafael sat with folded arms, watching Annalise and Edgar stand beside each other. Like Alessandra, he didn’t know how they reached this point for him to be here and Annalise to be over there. He thought about Alessandra’s words and wanted to offer the same advice.

"She is no different from Edgar. I need to stop her before she does something to worry you," Rafael replied.

"Oh. So we’ve both picked people who need to be kept an eye on," Alessandra realised, liking that they had something in common. "We are the calm ones in our relationships. You’ve long prepared for this since you have been Edgar’s friend." freeweɓnovel.cѳm

Rafael looked away from Annalise to the duchess. She was so quiet that he couldn’t believe how well she put up with Edgar’s antics. "Does Edgar not worry you? You seem to have gotten used to him quite fast."

"Well, we’ve been married enough for what he does or says to not bother me. I know when he is teasing me or being serious. I can help others who take his teasing words seriously. I think from the beginning I got used to Edgar quickly. There were many moments when he said something and I could not believe how bold he was," Alessandra said, smiling as she thought of the past.

She instantly thought of Edgar telling her that he could get her pregnant fast the same night they got married.

"I love his personality. I will admit there are times I just want to clamp my hand over his mouth to stop him from talking. Recently, the only thing that concerns me is him getting rid of Tobias for mentioning our children marrying each other. I believe this is the one time Edgar would attempt to kill Tobias and I don’t want the guards after my husband," said Alessandra.

Rafael believed that Edgar would strangle Tobias if he were to ever propose that their children get married in an official decree or have Edgar’s daughter, should he have any, have to take part in the selection.

Why would Edgar want his daughter there after what happened to the queen?

"Since Tobias might not be able to convince us to marry into the royal family, he might turn to you and Annalise. From what I learned about Annalise, she isn’t someone I would want here in the palace or any of your children. She has offered for me to see the border one day. I will take her up on the offer," Alessandra said, going back to watch Edgar and Annalise talk in secret.

"Edgar has informed me that the two of you will be looking for another home. Somewhere quiet to be with your child. You’ve had a hard time in this town but you don’t appear as someone to have struggled in the past. Someone not eager to burn the town down for how they treated you," said Rafael.

If Annalise were in Alessandra’s position, he knew the town would have been already burned to the ground and Annalise wouldn’t have needed someone to kill her father.

"In the beginning, I wanted revenge. Because I was engaged to Edgar, I could do as I wanted and my family could do nothing since he had to return. It didn’t feel as good as I thought. I was wasting my time on them. I don’t want any revenge on the town for the rumour about my face. The people who tortured me the most got what was coming to them already," Alessandra replied.

"Revenge is not always sweet for everyone. You might not have liked the person you became if revenge was all that was on your mind. You are an interesting woman duchess," Rafael confessed as speaking to her helped him get a better idea of her personality. She was the opposite of someone like Edgar but she suited him well. "I have been curious about you from the time Edgar told me he was getting married."

Alessandra smiled, grateful for the compliment. "It sounds like you approve of me for him. I was also curious about you. I didn’t expect Edgar to have so many friends though his circle is still quite small compared to others. I met everyone slowly but you were harder to spend time with because you live so far away. I hope to see more of you and Annalise in the future."

"Well, once your home at the border is sorted out. Why are they smiling?" Alessandra questioned, worried because of the sight of Edgar and Annalise smiling.

She didn’t know about Annalise but whenever Edgar went around smiling it meant he was up to no good. As Alessandra sat with Rafael and watched their partners, she thought Edgar was looking into a mirror with Annalise. Their smiles seemed similar.

"Annalise is a warrior, but you were not serious about her being like Edgar right? We don’t need to be too concerned about why they are smiling and why they are looking Tobias’s way," Alessandra said, reaching over to touch Rafael’s hand without thinking. She might need his help to stop whatever the two were planning.

Rafael sighed. There was much for Alessandra to learn about Annalise and why he kept watching over her when she was near Edgar. Edgar loved to make the people around him nervous and Annalise would scare anyone for her amusement. Both were watching Tobias which meant they were up to no good.

"They are alike," Rafael answered.

"Oh dear," Alessandra said, starting to get up to see what the two were talking about.

Rafael placed his hand on Alessandra’s shoulder to stop her from getting up when she was comfortable. "I will take care of it," he offered.

Alessandra wanted to go over herself but sat back down to let Rafael take care of it. Where she sat was in the shade with a nice breeze passing by so she didn’t want to be on her feet again. "Thank you," she said.

Rafael stood up from his seat beside Alessandra and walked over to the two troublemakers. It was funny in his eyes how the two couples had mixed-matched partners. Alessandra was more on the quiet side like Rafael, but Rafael would never want to trade the chaotic side of Annalise for anyone calm like himself. Then life would be boring.

"I am older than you. Using a spider to scare someone is my trick," Rafael heard from Edgar. He stopped before he could reach the two, not believing that they were talking about who was the one to scare others first.

"I do it better by using snakes instead of spiders. It almost got me fired because Rafael put it together that it was my doing. I am yet to understand why Rafael doesn’t like snakes or spiders like you do. How are you friends?" Annalise asked. She was delighted to know that the duke was a fan of scaring others.

Edgar wasn’t afraid of picking up spiders, unlike Rafael who refused to touch Herbert. She had much to discuss with Rafael because she heard the full story about him holding a spider to help scare someone at their school in the past.

"Question yourself because you are the one sleeping with him," Edgar answered.

Rafael shook his head and turned around to go back to sitting with Alessandra. It was much better there than listening to these two.
