Chapter 388: Threat (3)

"Nothing more will be said. I promise," Siena said, looking at Kayla. She was at her limit with Kayla’s behaviour these days. Kayla was not like this when they were back at home so why now was she acting out of character?

Kayla looked right back at Siena, wondering if she was the only one to hear Annalise’s threat. "If you do not want us to be here, you only need to say it and I will take my lady somewhere."

Annalise stopped, taking the moment to take off her chest plate. There was no one around other than Siena and Kayla to see her get undressed. "It is not you two that I do not want here. It is only you. Who are you to be calling the knights useless? The very same knights who go out to protect the kingdom. It is you who is useless."

"Then, if you wish to kick me out, you should do so. Why are you hesitating? We have all seen what you are capable of. If you wish to throw me out, do so," Kayla said.

She would love Annalise to send her away so that Siena would follow to find somewhere better to stay.

"The only reason I have not done it yet is that I promised Rafael that I wouldn’t use violence first. Since I love him, I am trying my best to hold back, but you are making it really hard. I am warning you. I had a rush to fight someone tonight and I didn’t. Don’t become that target," Annalise said, looking up at Kayla. "You’re also a waste of my time."

"What?" Kayla asked, taking a step forward. She was blocked by Siena putting her hand out.

"You’re a waste of my time," Annalise repeated. "I normally kill fools, not argue with them. You’re a fool so unless I am killing you, it wastes my time to speak with you. You should also not walk beyond where her hand is blocking you."

"So, you would like to kill me? You are as wild as I said," Kayla scoffed, placing her hand on her hips.

Annalise sighed and looked up at the ceiling. She really tried to be reasonable and give a warning, but there was no talking to fools. Not when violence worked so quickly. "Step aside, Siena."

"Please," Siena said, not wanting the situation to grow more heated. "I will speak to her alone and get her to apologise."

"Then it won’t be genuine and I really have a problem with the words she uses when speaking of me. Move before you are hit," Annalise said, gripping the chest plate she intended to throw at Kayla.

The word wild still angered her when it was meant to be used as an insult. She wanted to work on not getting upset if it was used jokingly. She knew the latter wasn’t the case for Kayla.

Siena did not want to move to let Kayla be hit. "Please give me the chance to speak with her, Annalise. If she does something you do not like again you can do as you please after because we are in your home. Please give me this one chance to speak to her."

Annalise noticed the slight movement of Siena’s hands shaking. "She won’t leave untouched if she says something rude again. Just this once because I like you, but this is the last time."

Annalise turned back around to make her way to her bedroom to get rid of her armour and find a dress for Siena.

"My lady, it is best that we go-"

"You are embarrassing me and you are embarrassing yourself. You have never been this way and I don’t know what has gotten in you, but it has to stop. You keep saying that I have been acting strangely these days and I wonder if that is how you have become this way. Perhaps I started to pretend less because I found my old habits tiring," said Siena, trying to find the change Kayla saw.

"You may not like Annalise, but I do. I like how carefree she is and I envy her. Maybe you have misread that envy in thinking it concerns Rafael so you hate her. My shoulders felt heavy and for the first time, I felt like I could relax. That I don’t have to plan my actions to not upset someone around me and for some reason, you are out to ruin it for me."

"I am doing what is best for you because you have not been thinking clearly like in the past. The Siena that I know would not stay here. She would not befriend this woman," Kayla responded, pointing in the direction Annalise walked off.

"I have nothing to be upset with her about that I cannot create a friendship with her. I will admit that there are times when I wish I could have been the one to fall in love, but I am happy with how it all turned out. If you cannot understand why I want to be her friend, then I am afraid you never knew me," said Siena.

"It is because that man had you in that house without interacting with any young ladies of your status here. We can go home to where all your friends are-"

"Just to hear them question why I am not married? I need a break away from everyone that I know and that includes you. First thing tomorrow when I go back for my money, I am sending you back to my parent’s home. I will not allow you to speak as you like to the lady of the manor. You are a maid," Siena said, feeling a pain in her chest from saying this.

"I have treated you like a friend and many times a sister, but you are a maid. There are things that you cannot do. No matter what you feel about her, this is her home and she can punish you or me as she sees fit. If you disrespect her again, I will not stop her. Even if I so desperately want to," Siena said, hoping Kayla would care for her enough to just leave or promise to stop speaking about Annalise.

Kayla was still in shock to hear that Siena wanted to send her back while Siena would remain here. "I have been by your side for as long as I can remember. I want what is best for you and get angry because I don’t think you are getting all that you deserve. I am this way because I care about you."

"This is my life. No one will ever know what is best for me more than me. You’ve been my friend for a long time and I appreciate you trying to help me have a good life, but I need you to step back and let me live my life. If you cannot bear seeing me starting a friendship with Annalise and end your childish ways, you must return to my father," Siena said.

She would have to take Kayla out of her plans to live more freely and finally get to do what she wanted. She cared for Kayla, but Kayla was starting to feel like a little piece of Travis and her father were stuck with her.

Kayla bit her lip to refrain from saying what was on her mind. They were so far apart in status and since she couldn’t do anything about the strange feelings she developed over the years, she wanted to see Siena with someone who was close in status and deserving of her lady.

Not a common knight. She had been satisfied with Rafael, but now Siena was on the path to settling for someone below her status and it wasn’t her. It was a mere knight. This ending she could not accept for Siena because it was not fair. There was one person she could count on to make things perfect again.

"I will return to your parents in the morning," Kayla answered.
