Chapter 94: Chapter 94

Kaelis sat on the bed in the infirmary, his feet on the floor. Of course, he clearly recalled what had happened

Ha... He shouldn’t have done that. What had he been thinking? Yes, he liked Alexis, but deep down, he for some reason knew something was going on between her and the alpha.

Who would have thought it was that serious?

She lied about it when he asked, and it confused him, not to mention she was...

Wait. He’d heard the Alpha call her a she. Not a he. That meant she was a woman. Alexis was in no way a man. That had also been a lie.

He threw his head back and stared at the ceiling.

Had he just been stupid or what? Of course, Alexis was a woman. Everything about her screamed so. The way she looked—prettier than even omegas. Of course, a beta wouldn’t be that beautiful.

Not to mention her size. Alexis was petite just like an omega—there was just nothing about her that followed up on her story of being a beta. Well except for her having no scent.

Although, if she wasn’t a beta, what was she then?

Omegas had scent and she didn’t. Was there a reason she had to pretend to be a beta? A reason that could perhaps get her killed?

The door suddenly pushed open and he lifted his head.

Augustus shut the door behind him. He glanced at Kaelis and began to march towards him, hands balled by his side.

Kaelis furrowed his brows and slowly got up from the bed. He took cautious steps back, eyes shifting to the door where he was attempting to escape from. But then Augustus was in his face in mere seconds, grabbing and slamming him against the wall, fingers coming around his throat with a tight grip.

Fuck, fuck.

This was why he avoided alphas at every cost. They liked this stupid power play for no reason.

He glared at Augustus and grabbed his wrist to free himself. "What the fuck—-is your problem?"

Augustus leaned into him, a much larger frame towering above him and his face hovered over his, intimidating Kaelis enough that he suddenly felt so small.

He abruptly let go of him, but he didn’t let him get away from the wall. Instead, he questioned, "You like Alexis, don’t you?"

"Am I safe to answer that?" Kaelis asked while he rubbed his bruised neck. "Fuck, that hurts. Were you trying to kill me or something?"

"If I wanted to kill you, you would be dead before you could even blink. There is only one person whom I can never win against or be able to kill, and that is the alpha. So be careful what you say, I’m not exactly very fond of you."

He rolled his eyes. "I can see that. You made it quite clear." Then he asked, "If you’re not here to kill me, then what do you want from me?"

"Alexis, do you like her in the way I think? Romantically?"

"I kissed her, what do you think?"

"You kissed her?" Augustus’s eyes widened as if he was suddenly coming to a realization. "Idiot, you’re lucky you’re not dead."

"It’s not my fault, okay?" Kaelis bit at him. "She lied to me."

Augustus didn’t seem interested. He said, "Whatever feelings you have for her, vomit it out because it’s never going to work. You would never have her and I assure you that the alpha will kill the last man on this earth if it meant never giving her up to anyone."

Kaelis blinked.

"What even is going on between them? Why is he possessive of her like that?"

"I asked myself the same things once before," Augustus said as he stepped into the man’s space, crowding him enough that he pushed back wanting to enter the wall if he possibly could.

"A-aren’t you a bit too close? Could you please step back, I can’t breathe."

"I don’t see a reason why you should not be able to." He didn’t move back, instead, he leaned down enough to whisper, "I’m going to let you in on a secret, but...once I do, you’re going to share a responsibility with me."

"What?" Kaelis flickered his eyes. "W-what do you mean by that? Are you trying to drag me into some kind of shit? I already told you I didn’t mean to kiss her. It was a mistake."

"No, no." Augustus pulled his head back a bit to stare into the green of his eyes. "You liking her is a good thing. Well for the most part where you are able to just like her, because...you would never be able to have her, not unless you want the Alpha to blow your brains out."

"What are you getting at?" Kaleis peered up at his much taller figure.

Augustus took a deep breath. "Alexis is the alpha’s mate."

"What?"

"You heard me. She’s the alpha’s mate."

Bile immediately rose to Kaelis’s throat. His mate. He kissed his freaking mate? That could have had him killed.

"That’s why it’s a miracle you’re not dead," Augustus added.

"W-why are you telling me this now?"

"I’m going to need your help."

"With what?"

"Protecting her," Augustus said.

Kaelis flickered his lashes. "Pro...tecting her?"

"Yes." He nodded. "Alexis is the alpha’s mate, but there is a reason she had to pretend to be a beta. That is because she’s an outcast."

"What? I don’t...I don’t understand."

"She doesn’t have a scent or pheromones, you can already tell that. But she also doesn’t have a wolf, which makes her what you can possibly call a human. Unacceptable for our kind, right?"

"Of course," Kaelis breathed out his words. "They would kill her if anyone finds out."

"Exactly. That is why the alpha brought her to the mansion in the first place, to protect her. That is why she had to pretend to be a man and put up with works that were meant for alphas and betas."

"Shit."

"See?" Augustus asked.

Kaelis furrowed his brows at him. "See what?"

"The way you just reacted," he said. "You like her a bit too much, and for that, you are rather sympathetic towards her. That is what I need from you."

The man slowly shook his head. "I still...don’t get what exactly you want from me."

"Protection." Augustus pinned him still with his intense gaze. "I need your protection. I am not enough to protect her, so I need you to help me."

"Me?" Kaelis pointed at himself. "What exactly could I possibly do?"
