The Alpha's Fated Mate Is an Outcast-Chapter 95
Chapter 95: Chapter 95
"A lot more than you know," Augustus pointed out. "Something is going to go wrong at the society gala, do not ask me how I know, but there is something I need you to do. You would protect Alexis, right? Even if sadly, you can’t have her, I’m sure you wouldn’t want to see her get hurt, right?"
"Of course, I really care about her!"
"Good, then from today onward, you’ve pledged your life to her and you cannot take it back, else I’ll saw your head off."
"That’s quite descriptive." Kaelis swallowed. "And did you just gaslight me into this duty?"
"Did I?" Augustus snatched his chin, brows cocked at him. "Will you do it or not? I’m not giving you a choice by the way, but I still just want to hear a yes from you."
Kaelis stared at him, his adam’s apple bumping at every swallow he took. Wouldn’t agreeing to this be him setting himself up for his own death. Besides, he was sure the alpha would skin him alive if he dared come close to Alexis.
Then again, the animal in front of him wasn’t exactly giving him a choice either. But wouldn’t that put Alexis’s life in danger? After all, something serious must be going on if Augustus was willing to risk telling him things like this. Would Alexis die somehow if he didn’t help.
He would never be able to forgive himself if anything happened to her. He cared for her.
His gaze focused back on Augustus who was staring intently at him.
"Fine," he said. "I’ll do it—"
The door pushed open. "Augustus, Noemi said I could find you here..." Lyndon’s words trailed off as he stared at the two men. "Oh..."
Augustus averted his gaze from him to Kaelis and took a step back.
Kaelis got off the wall and cleared his throat.
"My apologies for interrupting," Lyndon said.
He blinked. "I-Interrupting what?"
"Whatever...you were doing?" Lyndon turned around and proceeded to leave.
"Wait no, what are you talking—wait, we’re not even—" The door slammed shut. Kaelis furrowed his brows and glanced at Augustus who rather seemed unbothered. "Aren’t you going to say anything?"
"Like what?" Augustus frowned.
"He thinks we..." Kaelis rubbed his temple. "That position was pretty implying. You have no sense of personal space."
Augustus raised a brow at him. But he didn’t respond and instead walked off to the door. "We need to speak later, before the society gala, that is." He pulled the door open. "And one more thing, keep your mouth shut. Because if you slip even once, I’ll kill you without a thought, Kaelis Heleis. It’s a threat."
"Wow," the man breathed out. "It couldn’t get any worse."
———
Keelion sat in his office chair, staring into nothing. He was absent minded while clicking the fountain pen he held against the desk.
Augustus, who stood in the room, peered. at him, confused. What was going on with him? He’d been this way for a few days now. Randomly growing absent minded for no reason.
But that wasn’t even the worst part. It was the part where he would suddenly smile to himself. What the fuck?
It frightened him if anything. Keelion Fane didn’t smile for goodness sake. A man he’s known for ten years and he could count on his fingers how many times he’d seen him smile, and they weren’t even a genuine smile.
Honestly, he felt concerned. Was the man losing his mind?
Keelion suddenly chuckling to himself startled him and he peered hard at him. What the heck was happening?
The man twirled in the seat he sat on and stopped to finally stare at Augustus. He cocked a brow of surprise at him. "What are you doing here?"
"What?" Augustus blinked at him. "Sir, I’ve been standing here for the last ten minutes."
Keelion seemed a bit taken aback. "Who permitted you in?"
"You did. I knocked and you said I could come in."
From the look on his face, it was clear he’d done so absentmindedly. But he didn’t admit to it, instead he cleared his throat and nodded. "Right, right."
"Sir, are you okay?" Augustus asked. He was genuinely worried for him. He couldn’t be going cuckoo, could he?
"What do you mean?"
"You don’t smile and you’re smiling, which is very strange and scary, because um...it’s genuine. It makes me a bit worried."
Keelion gazed at him and every trace of amusement fell off his face. "Do you think I lack emotions or what?"
"Precisely, sir."
He darted his eyes around and cleared his throat again. "Well, I don’t. You’ve just never seen me smile, don’t accuse me."
"Right." Augustus lowered his head, stifling the smile that threatened to escape. "Of course, sir."
"What do you want?" Keelion asked, picking up his seal to finish through with the documents on his desk.
"Lorcan Zarr, he’s constantly sending messages."
"Ignore it."
"But he’s your brother, sir—"
"I said, ignore it." He shot him a look. "Didn’t you hear me?
Augustus let out a soft breath. "He wants to attend the society gala."
"Why?" Keelion arched his brow.
Members of other packs didn’t attend the society gala of other packs. And their alpha certainly doesn’t do that either.
Why would his brother want to attend his pack’s society gala?
Augustus shook his head. "I have no idea why he wants to. But he requests for a passing red card to be given to him."
Keelion furrowed his brow. Lorcan was unpredictable, stupid and impulsive at times if anything and he wasn’t exactly sure why he wanted to attend the gala.
He’d never done such before. Unless there is something new here—a reason he felt that he must come.
Alexis?
No, he wouldn’t dare, not after his warning last time he touched her. If there was anyone who knew him enough apart from Augustus, it was Lorcan. Lorcan knows very well what happens when he touches anything that belongs to him.
There was no way he would be coming here for Alexis. No, there was something else—a different reason.
It’s just, what is it? What is the reason?
Has something gone wrong with his pack or is it his own pack?
"Did he state the reason why he wants to come?"
Keelion lifted his gaze to Augustus.
"No." Augustus shook his head. "None of that, sir."
He nodded and clenched tighter on the golden seal he held.
"Go ahead, send him a red card."
