Chapter 66: Chapter 66

Alexis gulped down her food, ignoring the giddy feeling in her stomach. Right when Keelion retracted his hand, she proceeded to ask, "Keelion, what is going on with Augustus?"

"What do you mean?" The man arched his brow.

"He said...it is now his job to protect me and he was doing it under your order..."

"Yes he is," Keelion responded. "Why? Do you have a problem with it?"

Alexis shook her head. "No. It’s just...you told him."

"I did."

"D-do you trust him?"

Keelion stared at her and crossed his legs, fingers steepled. "Augustus is the only man I trust. There is nothing about me he doesn’t know. Do you know why?"

She shook her head.

"They say you can truly never know a person, because people change, but the thing is, that is not the case with Augustus. I’ve known him for ten years, he’s incapable of changing. Even if I decided to slit his throat for no reason, he wouldn’t object, and if I were to cut every finger on his hand, he would never leave my side or betray me. That’s just the kind of man he is."

A soft breath fled his nose. "While he’s an impulsive man sometimes, like what he did to you, loyalty and honesty are his best traits. He doesn’t know how to lie, not to me at the very least. And that is exactly why he would be a perfect guard for you. I’m not always going to be there, anything could happen and you need him. He would give you his life if I asked for it and that is not an exaggeration."

Alexis slowly nodded. How could someone be that loyal...? Betrayal was way easier than loyalty itself.

"What about...her...?"

"Who?" He shot her a look.

She was unwilling to say Althea’s name and averted her gaze, her teeth digging into her lip. "Her..."

Keelion smirked to himself and abruptly grasped her by the chin, shifting her gaze back to him. He slanted his head to the side, asking, "What about her? frёeweɓηovel.coɱ

"W-what are you going to do? Will I be...punished for what happened? I don’t think an apology would be enough. She didn’t want to hear it either."

The man locked in on her gaze and slowly inquired, "Punishment...? What kind?"

Alexis was unsure if she was seeing things, but why was he grinning at her? She blinked, more than just confused. "Um...like, getting rid of me?"

The grin was gone in the blink of an eye, something akin to disappointment flickering in his pair of blues.

’Um...’

"You’re so innocent," Sereia spoke into her head all of a sudden, her tone riddled with pure amusement.

Alexis frowned. ’What does that even mean?’

"Why don’t you ask our mate, huh? Let him explain to you what he meant because I’m not about to."

’What is wrong with you?’ She lifted her gaze towards Keelion who was staring at her with an inquisitive look.

"Why are you frowning?"

"Nothing." She shook her head. "I just wanted to know."

He relaxed back in his seat. "Nothing will be done to you, not unless I say so. Her family will be compensated, that is enough."

"Is it?"

"Is it not?" He glared. "Hasn’t she been hurting you first? It’s simply defense, why do I have to punish you for that? When you hurt someone, expect to be hurt too, it’s that simple."

"So...you’re not pissed off?"

He shrugged, unbothered. "I was at first, only because you put yourself in harm’s way. As for what you did, I couldn’t care less. She asked for it, no? You stood up for yourself, though you might have gone a bit too far..."

Alexis slowly lowered her head, a soft smile pulling up at her lips.

"Honestly kid, I was really scared for you. Be grateful we have a very devoted mate."

’Devoted?’

"Look at this man and tell me he’s not a devoted mate. Better than a lover!"

Alexis lifted her gaze to Keelion. He was staring out the window and her eyes trailed down his entire form that was perfectly fixed into the seat, tattoos exposed on the flesh of his bare elbows.

A devoted mate? Him? He cared that much?

Alexis walked back from the maid’s quarter and breathed out heavily. Kaelis who was next to her took a concerned look over her. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I am."

"You were very weak and wimpy when you were new," he commented. "You seem much stronger now,"

She glanced at him surprisingly. "I do?" Her face lit up with smiles when he nodded. Then she proceeded to pull up the arm of her shirt and tried flexing her bicep. "Do you think I have some muscles now?"

The man scrutinized her from head to toe and suddenly burst into laughter. "Hold your horses, Alex."

"Why? You said I’ve gotten stronger."

"Yes, but you’re still quite small. I’m telling you anyone would mistake you for an omega before they even assume that you’re a beta." He quickly proceeded to add, "But it’s not a bad thing, you know. You’re...cute and beautiful."

Alexis pointed to herself, oblivious to the flush creeping on the man’s face. She asked, "I am?"

He ran his fingers through his hair, nodding. "Very actually. I think you’re even prettier than omegas."

"Ah..." She slowly nodded, bobbing her head, her curls a bit bouncy.

Kaelis glanced at it and balled his fists, controlling himself from attempting to put his fingers through her hair. Instead, he inquired, "Do you like anyone, Alexis?"

Alexis looked at him. "Like? Who?"

"I don’t know. You tell me."

"Who do I like...?" she pondered deeply and her mind randomly drifted to Keelion, but then she quickly shook her head.

That was impossible unless she had a death wish. Just because he was her mate didn’t mean she was allowed to fall for him in any way, not unless she was ready to have her heart shattered for the first time in her entire life.

Keelion cared, but he wouldn’t go as far as to like her in any way. Not even in her wildest dream.

"No one," she responded, beaming at Kaelis. "Not now at least."

The man half smiled. "I see. Good, good."

"And what about you?" she asked. "Do you like anyone?"

Kaelis paused. "Uh...yeah. I do... A lot."

"Who is it?"

"I can’t tell?" He breathed out. "Might just scare ’em off."

"Oh..." She nodded. "I hope whoever it is likes you back. Eventually."
