Chapter 46: Chapter 46

"Did he never come?"

Alexis forced herself up the bed, her palm coming to rest against her forehead.

"He definitely did. You fell asleep on the sofa, not on his bed," Reia, who was seated on the sofa, said, grabbing her attention.

Alexis glanced beside her on the bed, wondering if he slept next to her. He probably did. Why didn’t he wake her up at least?

Her stomach rumbled and she groaned, putting her feet on the floor.

"I’m so hungry."

"Shouldn’t we head back? Those two men will suspect you if you start returning to the room late. I mean, they surely would wonder where you’d been."

Alexis peeked at the clock. It was still five in the morning. That was early. Neither Augustus nor Lyndon should be awake by now.

She hurried to the door with Sereia who followed suit and slipped her feet into her slippers, making her way out of the room and quietly closing the door behind her.

She tiptoed all the way to the room she shared with both men, however when she pushed the door open, she jolted, staggering back and almost falling on her butt if not for Augustus.

The man had been quick to grab her hand, pulling her up, enough that she nearly fell into him. She blinked, taking a deep breath and adjusting her shirt.

"Where are you coming from?"

"Huh?" She lifted her head and met his gaze. "I...I was just outside for a bit."

"You never slept in here. I’ve been awake all night."

Panic quickly rose to her throat, and she averted her gaze to the floor, trying to think of something to get her out of this mess. Was he some kind of vampire? Hybrid? What kind of person stays awake all night?

Augustus suddenly sniffing her made her flinch, eyes growing impossibly wide at him. "W-what are you doing?" she stuttered.

His face was blank as he pinned her with a narrowed look. He grabbed her and yanked her into the room. He slammed the door shut and crowded her space.

"Sir. W-w-what are you doing—"

"You smell of his pheromones," he said, interrupting her.

Alexis flickered her eyes at him, mouth falling open. "I don’t...know what you mean." She shook her head at him.

"You smell of the alpha. You reek of his pheromones."

"That’s not true," she denied. "W-why would I smell of his pheromones? That makes no sense, sir."

Amusement crossed Augustus’s face. "First of all, you’re a very terrible liar, second of all, I know something is going on between you and the alpha. The difference between me and anyone else is that I don’t care. I was curious, but not anymore. I only serve him, his personal life is not my business."

He continued, "If you’re going to sneak in and out of his room, be more careful, Alexis. There are eyes everywhere in this mansion. Lyndon may be a goofy man, but he isn’t stupid. Don’t implicate the alpha, he’s important to the pack and you have to remember that."

What would be the point of lying anymore?

Alexis cursed at herself and gave him a crooked smile. "We didn’t do anything. You’re misunder—"

"I don’t care, Alexis. The alpha’s personal life isn’t my business. His relationship with you has nothing to do with me, I just hope you’ll be careful. That is all."

She blinked at him blankly for a few seconds, before slowly nodding her head. "I understand."

"Good."

He pulled her aside and opened the door, stepping out. As soon as the door was shut, she breathed out and rubbed her chest.

"I thought I was going to collapse there for a second. I couldn’t breathe at all."

Sereia glanced up at her. "I think you should get more sleep. You’re going on a run with Keelion tomorrow morning, remember?"

"I don’t."

"Well, why didn’t you say no to him? He gave you a chance to stop working as a staff, but you wanted to continue."

"For our sake!" Alexis glared at her and grabbed the ladder to climb up into her spacious bunk bed. "You always support whatever he says. That’s not fair, show me support."

Sereia felt amused.

"First of all, he’s our mate, and he’s hot. Second of all, unlike you, Keelion Fane is not reckless. He has a point about you toughening up. Kid, you need it, and I also need to stretch my paws."

"You are really selfish—"

"I hope you’re not referring to me," she scoffed.

Alexis popped her head out of the bunk bed to glance down at her. "I am."

Sereia narrowed her eyes mischievously at her. "Suddenly kid, I just realized that I can’t get up there by myself. So get down here and carry me up."

Alexis screwed her face. "No. I’m not coming down there again. Besides, you’re large and really heavy! I always have to carry you every day, and it makes my back hurt."

"Are you calling me fat?"

"You’re not fat. You’re large and heavy."

Sereia stared at her, disbelief in her gaze. "This is what I get for being paired with a brat like you. Get down here and carry me right now."

"No." Alexis shook her head at her. "Sleep in Augustus’s bed. He’s gone."

"YA!!!" Sereia snapped at her. "Get down here and carry me, kid, or I’ll make your life a living hell today before you even go on a run tomorrow morning. I don’t think you’re going to like me knocking you around when you work."

"Are you even my wolf?" Alexis stared at her with horror. "This is bullying!"

"Get down here."

She peered at her and letting out a frustrated breath, she left the bunk bed and climbed down to the floor to pick up Reia. She grunted at the weight of her, one way or the other getting her into the bunk bed.

But then, a groan coming from Lyndon sounded and the man crawled out of his bed, dropping his feet on the floor, elbows popped against his knees. He peeked up Alexis’s bunk bed with a raised brow and Alexis who met his gaze half smiled at him.

"Sir..."

"Alexis, is everything okay—" He pointed to his head, rounding his index fingers. "—Up here?"

She had never felt herself die so internally like she did at the sound of that question.

"Why are you having a conversation with yourself?"

"It’s not like that..."

"I’m not deaf, you know."

"I’m aware, sir." She nodded. "I just didn’t get enough sleep."

She laid back down on her bed and pulled the sheet over herself before he could say another word. She heard him sigh and she glared at Sereia who was curled up comfortably across her, facing her.

"This is all your fault!" she whispered.
