Chapter 109: Chapter 109

Alexis slowly blinked her eyes apart. Her head was hurting excruciatingly and for some reason, her chest felt as if a knife had been struck into it.

Her eyes ran across the room. It wasn’t familiar. Where was she?

"Keelion?" She muttered his name and slowly proceeded to sit up on the bed. "Keelion..."

Her eyes darted from one place to another until someone opened the door and stepped into the room.

Augustus.

It was Augustus.

"Ms, how are you feeling?"

Alexis blinked at him. "Ms?"

He half smiled at her. "You’re not working under me anymore. And you’re the alpha’s mate."

"Where is Keelion?" She asked and forced herself up the bed to her feet. "Keelion, I want to s—"

"He’s not here."

"What do you mean?"

"We’re far away from Keelion."

She furrowed her brows at him. "What do you mean by that? I-I was with Keelion just yes..." Her words trailed off in her mouth. She remembered, she could recall yesterday.

The two women who forcefully took her. How she begged Lorcan, pleaded with Augusus and Kaelios to let her stay—to let her go back to the man she loved.

Alexis slowly shook her head, face contorting in horror. "Keelion. K-keelion, I need to get back to him."

She shoved past Augustus towards the door and tried to pull it open and leave. Buty Augustus grabbed her and pulled her back.

"Alexis, please stop. Keelion is too far from us and you can’t go to him, not even if you want to."

She shoved him away from her and turned to stare at him, her body trembling. Her tears bubbled rapidly in her eyes and broke, spilling down her face.

"How could you do that...?"

"I’m sorry...’

"How could you do that to me, Augustus?" She asked again, bawling her eyes out. "I don’t have anyone, he’s all I have. H-he’s the one other person to love me for what I was, despite everyone being against me. I had this one thing and you—you took it away from me." freeweɓnøvel.com

Augustus dropped his head, unable to look her in the eyes. "I’m sorry..." was all he could say. "I’m sorry..."

She shook her head at him. "I-I don’t want your sorry. I just want to go back to him. Take me back, Augustus. Get me out of here." She grabbed the door handle, turning it rapidly to open the door, but as if Augustus knew this would happen, he’d locked the door earlier.

Augustus grabbed her hand and before she could break away from him, he pulled her into a warm hug, hoping to somehow calm her down. "I’m sorry, but...you can’t go to him just yet."

"Please...no." Alexis thrashed against him, to try to get away, to leave this place. But he held her. She was begging, sobbing uncontrollably. "Augustus, please. Don’t do this to me. Take me back to him, I’m begging you."

He didn’t relent. "I’m sorry..."

"I can’t...I can’t be away from him." Her body sagged in his arms, unable to find the strength to fight anymore. And he held her, keeping her upright. "You don’t understand. I love him. I love him, Augustus, and I’ve never loved anyone before."

"I know." Augustus nodded his head, his finger combing down her hair. "I know you love him, and I wish I could take you back to him. But it’ll cost you your life."

"I don’t care." She sobbed painfully. "I just want to be with him, I just want to see him even if I have to die. Augustus—"

"You can’t die." He pulled back to make her look into his eyes. "Alexis, you say you love Keelion, then think about him."

She just cried.

"What would be the point of going back to him and giving him joy, just for it not to last?" He questioned. "You’ll break him, you’ll hurt yourself. Endure the hurt now, let him endure the hurt of your absence now. When you return to him, you’ll be able to be with him completely without worrying about your death. Without ever having to fear that you’d have not much time with him."

He sighed. "Don’t you get it, Alex?"

"My job is to protect you with my own life. Keeliomn knew what could possibly happen and he made me in charge of your life because I’m probably the only one capable of keeping you safe. And if keeping you safe means I have to hurt you like this? Then I’ll do it. You can hate me for it, but I’m not going to ever let you die. Your life is mine to protect, do you understand me?"

Alexis stared at him, her entire face a teary mess. She couldn’t utter a word to him and could only do more than she was already doing.

The man gently cupped her cheek and proceeded to wipe off her tears with his thumb. Then he pulled her into another hug, holding her until she seemed to begin calming down in his hold.

"You should get a bit more rest. We’ll talk later when you’re much calmer. I’ll explain everything to you, the. How does that sound?" He asked.

Alexis pulled back from the hug and slowly nodded her head at him. He walked her back to the bed and helped her lay down. He pulled the duvet over her trembling form and with one last careful look at her, he turned and proceeded out of the room, closing the door as quietly as he could.

Augustus pressed his back against the door and threw his head up to breathe out. Who knew what Keelion must be going through by now?

He felt guilty, more than anything, because he was the same man Keelion had spoken to a friend, telling him how much he loved his mate and the things he wanted to do. Hurting him like this by taking that woman away, even though he had a good reason, it was unforgivable.

Keelion would never forgive him for this.
