Chapter 40: Invitation

It has been two days since Aston woke up.

Bowman has returned to the church and comes to check on the Baron once a day.

His body has recovered fairly well in a week, and he can now walk around with the support of crutches.

His digestion was still not as it was before, so Virelle had to take extra care of it. He was on a liquid diet, but the consumption of his nutrients was closely monitored.

To allow his body to naturally recover, proper rest and nutritional food were extremely necessary.

Currently, they were in the living room, having a casual chat as Virelle diced some apples for her children.

"Why do you need to go to your office this soon?" Kevin had a frown on his face when he asked that. After all, it had been only a few days since he recovered, and his father was thinking of rejoining his work.

"We had accumulated enough funds to make a concrete route to our town, that’s why I don’t want to delay the work by resting here," Aston revealed his reason for being hasty.

Connecting a solid path to their town would boost their revenue several times over. Not only traders but tourists as well would be able to travel to Westmere, which would boost people’s income significantly within a few years.

It was a huge step toward the progression of the town, and Aston didn’t want to delay it any-

"You can’t go. Not until you can walk properly." Virelle, with a smiling face, relayed her command.

Aston’s vigor died down as he slowly nodded, "Understood..." Better not make her angry...

Virelle suddenly remembered something and asked the fourth member of the family, "Arthur, you still haven’t told me how you gathered funds to afford such expensive herbs."

The atmosphere turned a little heavy as the other two also turned toward the youngest one.

At that time, Virelle was quite devastated, so she didn’t ask him how he had earned so much money, but now, she was worried.

Arthur exhaled a weary sigh. "I told you it’s not illegal money." ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

"But still...thousands of gold....how did you earn them?" Kevin asked this time with curiosity written over his face.

He has been hunting wild beasts as well however, those beasts didn’t give him much, just enough to afford a few expensive meals.

Realizing that there was no way out, Arthur told them, "You know there are a hundred criminal hideouts across the cities? I helped the authorities to catch them. Just that."

"Lie."

"Definitely a lie."

"The authorities offering thousands of gold coins? Yes, a lie."

Three different minds but the same judgments.

Virelle told her son in a soft voice, "We won’t question your methods, son, but please don’t risk your life to earn money. Your parents are still capable of feeding you."

Arthur nodded, "Yeah, I know. But if I don’t take some risk now, will you be there in the future to always protect me?"

The room fell silent.

Although it sounded blunt what he said was true. In the future, once they join the academy, they will be on their own. And if they build a habit of relying on others, it would be difficult for them to manage things on their own.

It was then,

*Knock* *Knock*

They heard knocks on the door, urging Kevin to get up and approach the door.

Opening the door, the blond boy was startled to find two men standing there. One of them was familiar.

"Who is it-ah." Virelle also approached the door and was shocked to see her brother standing there.

There was another person, a man in his late thirties wearing a black suit.

"Good evening, Miss Stronghart. I am a messenger from the royal court. Came here to deliver a request."

Virelle was stunned, "R-Royal court." She was unable to discern why someone from the King’s court would visit them...

"Let them come in first, dear." Aston approached her, his wheelchair being pushed by Arthur.

The messenger looked at Arthur for a moment before drawing back his gaze to the Baron, "I am glad to see that you are safe now."

Aston gave a polite smile before inviting them inside.

In the living room, only Arthur and Aston were attending the guest while the other two went to the kitchen to prepare some tea and snacks.

"Sir Roman, can I ask you the reason behind your visit?" Baron chose to prioritize his direct superior rather than the royal servant since if this had been a case of emergency, he would have said so.

The Viscount, who was looking around a bit, focused on the man in front of him and said, "I came here to invite you and your family to attend the funeral ceremony of Father."

Aston was not surprised, so he simply listened to him.

"I know our relationship hasn’t been great in the past few years, but I want Virelle to be part of his final rite."

"But I am no longer a part of the Ashenford family and the man who died was nothing to me." Suddenly, the woman of the house appeared in the living room and relayed her answer.

Roman’s brows drew closer, "He is gone now, Virelle. Can’t you overlook what he did in the past and return home just this once?"

Virelle’s eyes were filled with hate as she said, "After what he has done to my husband, I can only come there to spit on his grave."

"...!" Roman’s eyes widened, not in anger but shock, "...what did he do?"

"Were you not aware, Sir Roman?" The royal messenger spoke up, "The attack on the Stronghart family...a few days ago in Atinberg. The former Viscount is the reason for the Baron’s current condition."

Roman’s lips parted in shock as he turned towards the Baron...and then looked at his sister.

Her eyes were filled with tears as she spoke in an aggrieved tone, "He tried to take Aston away...tried to kill the man I chose for myself! And you think I will ever care for that man?"

Aston held his wife’s hand while Kevin drew closer to her, feeling his heart turning heavy seeing his mother in tears.

Arthur just remained silent, sitting there with his eyes drawn to the ground. However, inwardly, he was relieved that his mother was sensible enough not to care about that bastard.

Roman’s gaze fell as he clenched his fists and got up, "I apologize for intruding. Excuse me." And without another word, he walked away.

Aston wanted to send him off but he was attending another guest.

Kevin brought his mother to the other room, leaving only the two behind.

The messenger spoke, "I won’t take much of your time considering you surely want to be with your wife right now."

Aston gave a polite nod and didn’t say anything.

The messenger took out an envelope from his pocket on which the seal of the royal family was stamped before extending it towards the Baron.

Aston took it with his brows slightly elevated as he heard the messenger voicing, "It’s an invitation to the royal court. His Majesty has invited you and your family for the birthday celebration of the youngest Prince."

"..." Arthur didn’t have a good feeling about this.
