Chapter 27: Rescue-3

I was scared.

It all happened so suddenly.

We were just having dinner—me, Mom, and Dad. It was a good day. I went fishing with Dad. We brought back some fish and grilled them—my favorite.

I was laughing, telling Mom what happened at the lake.

Sure, Dad had a debt to pay, but other than that, we were fine. We were happy.

But then... everything changed.

A few men came out of nowhere. They started killing people—burning homes, shouting curses.

Dad tried to hide us, but he was too late.

Someone stabbed him.

Why? Why did they stab him? They weren’t debt collectors... they were strangers. So why did they kill him?

My mind went blank. I couldn’t move. My legs shook as I watched my father fall right in front of me.

It wasn’t a dream.

His blood—warm and thick—ran over my toes. A cold shiver climbed up my spine.

This was real. He was gone.

And the man who killed him turned to us.

He was going to kill us too.

That’s when I acted. I didn’t think. I just moved. I used one of the abilities I’d recently learned.

I had no choice—I gave everything I had to protect Mom and myself.

Through tears, I chanted and raised a stone wall between us and that monster.

"Quit it, you brat! This won’t save ya!" he yelled, slamming his fists against the wall.

But I didn’t stop. I kept rebuilding it every time he broke a piece.

Minutes passed. He still hadn’t reached us.

Mom was curled in the corner, covering her ears. Her eyes were wide—shocked, broken. She couldn’t stop staring at Dad’s body.

I wanted to cry. I wanted to fall apart too. But I couldn’t. I couldn’t let my guard down.

My arms trembled. My head was spinning. I was pushing my power too far.

But I had to protect her.

I had to protect what’s left.

I lost one of the people I love. But I still have one more.

And right now, that’s enough to keep fighting.

...

[3rd Person POV:]

Outside the house, Kevin arrived near the entrance of the town and looked at the scene before him.

The rain has stopped but fortunately, the goons are no longer trying to create flames again.

Kevin looked at the children being tied together in the middle of the town, their mouths gagged and tears continuing to trail down their faces.

Hundreds of dead bodies have been piled up and burned on the town streets. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com

Only children were being taken away while the adults were killed. A few women too, were being taken, for obvious reasons.

Kevin clenched his fists, ’This vile creature should never have been born.’

He wanted to slaughter each one of them right away, but he knew he couldn’t. He has to move according to the situation, or he should be trapped as well, and it would be a game over.

He looked at those goons, and it didn’t seem they were awakened ones. So dealing with them would be easy.

’Some of them are still inside the houses...’ Kevin only had a single shot to take everyone down. That’s why he decided to first bring them all out.

And what could be the best bait to trap a hunter? Try stealing their prey.

’Activate Shadow Steps,’ His figure became a blur as Kevin used all the strength in his legs to advance towards the group of children in the middle.

With his current abilities, he would only be able to remain unnoticeable for ten seconds. And that was enough.

"Eiiiik!" The kid in the front was startled to find the person appearing before him out of nowhere.

Kevin slit the rope and shouted,

"RUN!!"

The kids were already in a panic, and that shout broke the dam of their tolerance, and they started to run.

"Ahhhhh!!"

"Maaaa!"

"Daaaaaaad!!"

"Gaaaaaahhhh!"

The cries of the children instantly alerted all the assailants.

They all started rushing out of the houses, and many tried to catch the children.

Kevin jumped from his spot, making no delay in blowing through his mouth and launching a spell, ’Tear Cloud’.

The black smoke was released from his mouth and levitated at the height from which it was exhaled.

It spread at a rapid pace and instantly covered the whole middle lane of the town, affecting whoever stood at a decent height.

"Aghhh! What the heck is this?!"

"My eyes!! Aghhhhh!"

"F*ck! Shhhit!"

They were covering their eyes as they burned as if lava had been sprinkled in their eyes.

Kevin didn’t delay. He has trained himself for this.

He marched into the battlefield, holding two daggers and his demeanor oozing with the utter lust for blood.

He dashed forward like a shadow, silent and swift.

The first man barely turned before Kevin’s dagger slit his throat. Blood sprayed. The man dropped, twitching.

Another stumbled out of the smoke, coughing and crying. Kevin drove a dagger into his chest, twisted it, and pulled it free with a jerk.

Screams echoed. Blinded men swung their weapons wildly, slashing at the air.

Kevin ducked under a wild swing and stabbed low—once in the knee, once in the stomach. The man fell, gasping. Kevin finished him with a clean slice across the neck.

A third rushed in, yelling blindly. Kevin stepped aside and rammed his blade into the man’s ribs. He didn’t stop—he dragged the dagger along, cutting through flesh like paper.

"Monst—!" the fourth man tried to say, but Kevin’s second dagger silenced him with a brutal stab through the mouth.

He moved without mercy. Every step was a kill. Every breath he took reeked of blood.

By the time the smoke thinned, a dozen bodies lay scattered. Kevin stood among them, soaked in red, his daggers dripping. His eyes—sharp, clear, and cold—looked for more.

But then, a fireball came rushing his way from the left and Kevin didn’t have the time to react.

"Khak!" He was thrown away, his left arm burning.

However, just as he fell his eyes caught something that overwhelmed his pain.

"No!" Kevin tried to get up, but because of the battle, his legs were numb.

The last remaining goon has taken a single girl away.

The same girl whom he came to save here!
