Chapter 26: Rescue-2

Arthur was not far away from his brother as he followed Kevin toward the burning town.

’Is he going to save people there?’

[Possibly, going to rescue another Blessed One.]

Hearing Lily’s words, Arthur’s brows elevated, ’There is another devotee there?’

[I can feel a divine presence from the town, but cannot pinpoint them.]

Arthur shook his head slightly...still useless as ever.

Well, she is helping him keep a record of his stats.

’Talking about stats, how does it look now?’

...

He has achieved quite many spells in these three years. He has been paying more attention to his magical abilities since magic makes things easier.

His body was growing but since he was yet to reach the age where his muscles could actually grow, he was not overworking himself.

’Hmm?’ As Arthur drew closer to the town, he noticed that there were many horses outside the town, and a few men who appeared to be not regular goons, were waiting.

They were holding swords and had already killed the soldiers who were supposed to protect the town.

’This town is not a part of any jurisdiction...and an independent town, free of government rule. It explains why no reinforcement arrived.’ There were a few towns across the globe that have retained their independence through several means like their contribution to society or their ancestor who wished to have their birthland always remain free of politics. There are several other reasons.

And this town was one of them.

’Is he planning to rush into that town just like that?’ Arthur was baffled to see how passionate his brother was about rescuing the Blessed One. Was that person so important that he lost his rationality?

’Guess, there is no helping in it...’

Arthur sighed and stopped in his tracks.

There was still some distance between Kevin and the entrance of the town.

"Spirits...can you lend me a hand?" In a faint whisper, he called out to the scarce amount of water spirits around him.

They were small in numbers, but enough to handle the flame.

{Eww...it smells!}

{Are we playing here, Art? I don’t like it here!}

{Art, Art, is it what they call fireworks?}

{Art, wanna play!}

Hearing their enthusiastic and somewhat displeased voices, Arthur sighed, "I don’t like flames, just like you all, so let’s extinguish it together, okay?"

With them, they have to be quite patient. Water spirits don’t like violence much, but they respond to his calls and also become more friendly when he doesn’t hide his feelings from them.

Just like right now, he loathes those flames that could harm his brother.

As such, he has to do something about them.

Mana began gathering around him, swirling like mist. The air grew heavy, humming with a deep sound only spirits could hear. Arthur closed his eyes, breathing slowly. The water spirits floated closer, their small bodies shining with soft light.

He lifted his hand toward the sky.

The wind stirred. Clouds, once thin and weak, thickened above him. The ground trembled faintly as more mana poured out from Arthur’s body, mixing with the spirits’ energy.

The fire in the distance crackled louder as if sensing its coming end.

Arthur pressed his hand tighter into the air. His heart ached for his brother, for the danger he might be facing. He didn’t try to hide it. The water spirits could feel his true feelings — his fear, his anger, and his deep care. They sang in answer, voices like the soft ringing of bells.

A bright blue light wrapped around Arthur’s arm, flowing up into the clouds.

Then, with a deep rumble, the sky opened.

Raindrops fell — first a few, then a steady, endless rain. It poured down hard, soaking the earth. The flames hissed and shrank under the cold assault. The smoke thinned. The air grew clean and cool.

Arthur kept standing there, eyes still closed, letting the rain wash over him. His clothes clung to his body, but he didn’t mind.

He smiled a little. The spirits, too, danced in the rain, happy and free.

The town was now free of flames and with the absence of illumination, Arthur saw it better.

They were kidnapping the children and had murdered hundreds of men.

However, before that, Kevin has to fight his way into the town.

’Let’s see how prepared you are.’ Arthur decided to remain hidden for now and watch his elder brother.

....

Kevin didn’t know which God blessed him but he was extremely thankful for the rain which extinguished the flames.

At least he could breathe properly now.

His eyes caught the figure of two assailants near the entrance.

They have already tied two kids to the horses and have beaten them so they don’t cry anymore.

Seeing the bruises and cuts on the small kids’ faces, Kevin’s heart trembled. His anger was surging.

However, he didn’t lose his mind and tried to attack them head-on. He knew his limitations, so he didn’t push his luck because of his emotions and decided to sneak on them.

’Activate shadow steps.’ Giving the command, Kevin wielded his dagger.

One of the assailants has his back against Kevin.

The blond boy rushed towards him with inaudible steps, his pace allowed him to shorten the distance before he jumped in the air, landed on the man’s shoulder, and slit his throat in a fluid motion

"GHUK!!" The man groaned, his eyes rolling back as blood gushed from his slit throat.

"Mark!" The man in front cried but before he could have moved, Kevin threw the dagger straight into the man’s eye.

"Aaaa-agh!" His cry was muffled as Kevin jumped over the half-dead man’s shoulder and speared his knee into the man’s face, pulled another dagger, and stabbed his neck.

*STAB* *STAB* *STAB*

Three consecutive stabs before the man fell and Kevin jumped away.

Wiping the blood off the blade, he said, "Sorry, Art but I am using your training to murder people."
