New World with Four Husbands-Chapter 177: A beautiful man [2]
Chapter 177: A beautiful man [2]
"Hm? Are you Coco Hughes?" The beautiful man repeated his question when Coco didn’t answer.
However, Coco simply stared.
The man’s voice was deep and smooth, a rich timbre that sent a shiver down her spine.
His voice was confident and clear, the sound of it carrying to her easily even from the distance between them and the fact that the man had a commanding presence, his tone confident and authoritative, with just enough warmth to make him less threatening than feared didn’t help.
"I heard from an adorable birdie that I would be able to meet the infamous daughter of Baroness Hughes here.." The man said, raising his hand and hiding the lower half of his face behind the sleeve of his robe.
"But it seems that she’s not here yet." The man stated, his eyes sneering down as he shot her a smile.
His voice was like velvet, and each word was clearly enunciated, the man’s speech somehow formal, but offensive— an underlying meaning in each word that made Coco feel even more wary than she was earlier.
"Would the infamous Coco Hughes stop by in this shop in a specific time?" He asked, tilting his head and making himself look vulnerable for her eyes.
Coco narrowed her eyes into a pointed stare and kept her mouth shut, not letting another word out.
He used the word ’infamous’ and knows that Coco Hughes was a daughter of a noblewoman, but from what she remembered, Coco Hughes was discarded the moment she changed.
Her disownment was announced among the nobles, but only a few know where she is right now.
After all, Corraidhin Hughes is a socialite who loves attention and power more than anything else— often found at tea parties hosted by other nobles, spreading rumors that circulate among the noblemen and noblewomen who had just turned adults.
Coco Hughes’ mother was a certified karen through and through. Coco thought to herself, looking away from the beautiful man before her.
She had avoided thinking about Corraidhin because Coco doesn’t seem her as relevant in her new life, but now that she was being confronted by a beautiful man who was obviously a noble with high status, she is thinking of paying a visit to the old woman.
"What a tough tree trunk." The man mumbled, still covering the lower half of his face with the sleeve of his expensive robe.
Of course, Coco ignored that.
It would be much better to avoid answering him and bringing unwanted attention to herself while the merchant is out.
So, she would rather risk ignoring such a beautiful nobleman with high status who was disguising— quite poorly so— himself as a villager.
If he wanted to make a scene, he would have done so earlier, but she does not want any more trouble on her plate because she is already busy enough as is!
"I only want to ask something important, you know?" The man did not seem like he would budge because he decided to lean against the glass counter and shot her a smile even though the smile did not reach his eyes.
"I heard from a trusted supplier of mine that Coco Hughes has started to become a better person and had to see it myself." He kept his gaze on Coco’s face, eyeing how her expression remained blank.
Coco somehow expected him to give up because she was not looking at him in the first place and instead, glued her attention on the magic stones inside the glass display.
"That man won’t stop talking.." Lala mumbled, her voice dripping with hesitant amazement.
I agree. Coco mused in her mind, forcing her ears to block off any sound come from the man beside her and focused on waiting for Mrs. Tani to get back and get out as soon as she gets what she came there for.
The only reason why she was putting up with the man’s nonsense was because she wanted to get her money from the merchant.
She was not feeling well yesterday so she only dropped off the basket and did not wait for Mrs. Tani gave her the payment, and Joachim did not have the money on him this morning so she had no choice, but to wait for the merchant.
Again, she doesn’t mind waiting. freewёbnoνel.com
However, the man beside her has not stopped staring at her face and ultimately made her uncomfortable.
"Please step away and stop staring at me." Coco spoke up and shot a glance in the man’s way, her eyes narrowed slightly as a warning.
"Finally." The man’s eyes brightened up when he heard her voice, "I thought you had become mute because of how handsome I am— I’m glad though! This means that you can answer my questions now, right?"
As if on clockwork, she turned away from him again and kept her mouth shut.
He wants her attention for entertainment purposes, but she doesn’t have any energy to give that entertainment he seeks because he makes her utterly uncomfortable.
"The merchant of this village is a good friend of mine.. And I was told that you’re quite close to her." The man hummed out as he stared at her side profile, "But as far as I’m concerned, the two of you don’t seem to be on good terms."
We are on good terms actually. Coco commented through her mind, not wanting to entertain his statements because she knows that it will only bring her headaches.
Although, despite that he was quite pushy and speaks with a slight drawl, his words enunciated clearly but with a sense of lazy ease— she still can’t herself feel comfortable in his presence.
She could see the cogwheels on his mind working when he realized that Coco decided to be quiet again.
It was almost comical, seeing him open and close his mouth like a fish caught in a fishing net, squirming to get back to the water even though it was impossible.
"Why won’t you answer me?"
