Chapter 163: An unexpected apology over dinner

"Would you mind if I take a seat here and.. Accompany you for the night, Mrs. Hughes?"

Coco blinks and stops herself in the middle of chewing as Ruby, the woman with the large bosom, asks her with the most polite tone she had ever heard of.

Swallowing her food, Coco reached out for the cup of water and picked it up, drinking the liquid in one gulp.

"I don’t mind, but.. What do I owe to have such lovely company tonight?" Coco laughed, forced and nervous, as she flashed Ruby a smile.

Joachim had left her alone five minutes ago and did not seem to mind Ruby’s absence from the kitchen nor the front desk, opting to skip on his merry way to the staff room of the Red Horse Inn.

"You owe me nothing, madam." Ruby was quick to shoot down the idea of Coco owing her something, "I just want to have a conversation with you and get to know you.. Better."

Coco nodded her head slowly in understanding, her mind racing at the possibilities of having a conversation with the woman who belittled her the first time she rented a room— she doesn’t mind, of course, but..

"Uh.. You do know that I am married, right?" Coco asked, shoving a spoonful of her dinner inside her mouth.

"Yes, madam, but I have no ill intention towards you or your husbands.. It was quite clear that you love them dearly and has no intention of marrying another mediator." Ruby said, lowering her head in a surrendering manner.

In doing so, Coco saw how her chest bounced ever so slightly from the corner of her eyes and made her choke on the food inside her mouth.

Why does her eyes keep on wandering in her presence?!

Coco screamed at herself in her mind, scolding her eyes and her entire being for being a pervert who wouldn’t stop looking at people’s breasts.

"Yes, yes.. If you don’t have any intention except for being a conversationalist tonight, then feel free to take a seat." Coco stated, nodding her head in approval and smiling at Ruby’s way.

"Thank you, Mrs. Hughes." Ruby expressed her gratitude with a bright smile.

"Please, don’t thank me." Coco decided to humor and to be polite around the woman who looked like she was truly pleased to be accepted by Coco.

Such enthusiasm reminds her of someone.

Coco forced a smile as she shoved another spoonful inside of her mouth, not wanting her mind to dive back into the gutter and possibly ruin her mood for tomorrow again— just like what she did last night in Jacques’ and Renaldo’s house.

The dark haired woman offered Coco a bashful smile before she pulled the wooden chair out underneath the table and took a seat.

"Don’t worry, Mrs. Hughes. I will only accompany you until you’re done with your meal, I only want to have a conversation, I don’t want to disturb you any further than I already am." Ruby stated, assuring Coco.

"It’s okay. I don’t mind." Coco returned the assurance halfheartedly, "Anyway, what did you want to talk about?"

At Coco’s question, the woman across from her seemed to have a shift in her mood as the bashful smile on her face turned into a saddened one.

"First of all, please forgive my behavior that night." Ruby lowered her head as she expressed her remorse, "I have been trying to have a conversation with you, but every time I see you, you seem to get busier and busier."

Coco continued to shove spoonfuls of her food inside her mouth as she listened to Ruby, nodding her head along to show the woman that she was still listening.

"I wasn’t planning to talk to you tonight, but Mr. Tani encouraged me to talk to you so.. Here I am." Ruby finished her statement and kept her gaze downwards, not having enough courage to look Coco in the eyes.

Coco nodded her head once more and when she noticed that Ruby was done speaking, she grabbed the cup— the one which Ring refilled with water— and drank the water inside in one gulp.

"I see." Coco hummed out as she placed the cup down, "I actually don’t mind the hostility you showed me that night."

Sure, Coco didn’t like how condescending Ruby sounded when she first rented the room on the second floor, but she understands why the woman acted that way.

Coco Hughes is trash.

It’s a fact that the people of Yogusho Village acknowledge and have avoided her to not get into trouble because no matter what they do or say..

No one can change the fact that Coco Hughes was the only daughter of Baroness Hughes.

Coco let out a sigh through her nose as she smiled at Ruby. "I completely understand why you acted the way you did and honestly? I would, too, if someone had been nothing, but trouble in my workplace."

The look of relief and amazement crossed Ruby’s face, and it was such a sight to see on the condescending woman.

"So, you can stop feeling bad now because you have apologized to me." Coco smiled wider and offered assurance towards Ruby without hesitation.

Coco could almost see the cogwheels in Ruby’s head turning and cranking as she tried to think of what to say, obviously overwhelmed by something— her lips opening and closing as sounds stammered out of her mouth.

"I.. You.. That’s.. I— uhm, I can’t believe it.." Ruby somehow managed to form a sentence.

"You can’t believe what?" Coco urged the woman to continue speaking with a nod of her head, returning back to her meal.

"That.. That you have changed so much from what you used to be." Ruby muttered as her eyes noticeably got wetter, "I always thought that you wouldn’t accept a mere apology from someone like me."

Coco’s hand froze mid-air and blinked. "Why wouldn’t I accept your apology? You sound genuinely apologetic to me."

Ruby couldn’t help, but tear up.
