Chapter 140: A good friend

The conversation ended the moment Coco walked away from Kairo and joined her friends by the picnic blanket.

She may have been harsh towards the purple eyed mediator, but he couldn’t take no as an answer so she had to be forceful with her rejection.

She already has Coco Hughes’ original four husbands who still don’t like her guts and would occasionally bother her with their requests so thinking about another one being a husband is giving her a headache.

Fortunately, her play time with Rey and Jacques managed to push the thought at the back of her head.

"Catch this, Coco!" Rey called out before he threw something in Coco’s way, the object glinted lightly against the sunlight which made it easier for Coco to spot and catch.

Coco crouched slightly and leaped in the air, her hand holding out to catch whatever Rey threw her way and landed on the water, making water splash all over the place and splashing some on Jacques and Rey.

The two let out a joyful laughter as they watched Coco emerge from the water.

"That jump was fantastic!" Rey complimented her as he giggled, "Did you catch the stone? It’s green! Just like the color of your eyes!"

Coco hummed and looked at the stone, sure enough, the stone was shining with the same hue of her eyes.

"That’s so sweet of you, Rey." Coco smiled at the little boy, "I’ll turn this into a necklace, how does that sound? To remember this day as a fun day for us?"

Rey’s eyes went wide and the smile on his face got wider as he nodded his head fervently, "Yes, please! Actually, give it back to me! I’ll give it to you once I have it turned into a necklace!"

Coco walked towards his spot, the water splashing every time she took a step forward and sending small waves that ripple towards Jacques, then once she reached him, she held out a hand and gave him the stone.

Rey tightened his hold on the stone and turned to the pink haired woman who was watching them with a small, content smile.

"Does the village have someone that could turn this into a necklace, Jacques?" Rey asked and slowly made his way to the river bank when the woman was currently standing, "I haven’t explored the village yet so I don’t know."

"Yes, I know someone." Jacques hummed out and caressed Rey’s hair once he stopped in front of her, "We could talk to her later after we’re done here if you want."

"I would love to!" The little boy beamed at her and looked at the stone, "I want to show Coco that I can be kind and caring, too. She did ignore me because I was misbehaving.. I don’t want that to happen again."

Jacques hummed softly and patted his head which made him look away from the stone to look at her.

"Coco was indeed childish for acting like that, hm?" Jacques giggled and shook her head, "But trust me, she’s one of the people you could trust and rely on no matter what.. It took her a while to come around, but it’s all worth it."

Rey blinked and tilted his head. "It took a while for her to do what? I thought you’ve known her for your whole life..?"

Jacques only giggled again. "That was just an exaggeration. She had a reputation before I became her friend, you know? Actually, she was the one who told me that I’m her friend. Just like that, I didn’t even know that I would have a friend as reliable as her."

Rey’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion and looked at Coco. freewebnøvel.coɱ

She was mumbling to herself and was looking down on the water, walking around while concentrating as if she was looking for something.

The sight made Rey smile. "Does that mean that she was someone you didn’t know before? And that she made you her friend first before you made her your friend?"

Jacques nodded her head. "That’s right."

"So, she just announced that you’re her friend without asking you to be her friend?" Rey asked with his face scrunching up in disbelief, "And you agreed? Just like that?"

Jacques raised an eyebrow at the tone the little boy gave her. "How old are you again?"

".. What does my age have to do with my question?" Rey retorted back and crossed his arms as he looked at her, returning the sass in her voice.

"Just answer the question." Jacques insisted with a roll of her eyes.

"I’m thirteen years old." Rey said and he let out a huff, feeling like he had confessed a secret in front of the devil, "Again, what does my age have to do with my question?"

"Well.. A thirteen year old teen cried because someone like Coco ignored him." Jacques hummed out with a teasing smile, "Think of it like this, in my age, I have no time to socialize so I have to rely on my instinct."

Rey’s face flushed with color when he got reminded of the afternoon when he cried like a baby, making him puff out his cheeks.

".. What does your instinct have to do with this now?" Rey grumbled under his breath.

"My instinct said that I could trust Coco and she has not set any of my alarms off. In fact, she has been nothing, but sweet and understanding towards me and my husband." Jacques tutted out with a matter-of-fact tone.

"You could have just said that Coco was a good person instead of teasing me." Rey said, expressing his embarrassment by the way his face got dusted with pink.

"I was just returning the energy." Jacques smiled.

The conversation would have continued between them, but Coco called out to Jacques.

"Jacques! Look!" Coco sprinted towards them and held her hand out, "I found a stone! If the sun hits it, it kind of turns pink! Like your eyes and hair!"

She really is a good friend.
