Chapter 122: New mediator in town [2]

"Coco? What are you doing here?" Jacques gasped out, her eyes wide in surprise when she saw Coco walk through the door.

"I came here to help." Coco answered, closing the door behind her and stepping further into the shop.

"Oi, go back to your room and lay down! I heard from Koa that you were heavily injured when you dropped off that basket you were carrying earlier!" The butcher called out to her over his shoulders, slamming his butcher knife down on the flying pig’s neck.

Jacques perked up, as if she had realized something important. "He’s right, you know! Words travel fast and we heard how Koa had to rush you back to your room because you were refusing to be treated!"

"Because it wasn’t really that much of a big deal." Coco said for the nth time, her voice exaggerated from having to say the same sentence over and over again.

"That’s what you also said last time!" Jacques huffed out as she crossed her arms, "That it wasn’t a big deal, but you ended up crying while I was treating the wounds in your arms and back!"

Renaldo snorted at that. "Not a big deal, but cried?"

"Hey!" Coco whined, staring daggers on the butcher’s back as he continued to do his work.

"I’m just saying." The butcher shrugged his shoulders and slammed the knife down once more before packing something in front of him, "If you’re really up to do something, deliver this to the town hall and give it to the chief— she ordered a lot in advance for the guest."

Coco brightened up when she received the order, the corner of her lips curling up into a bright smile. "Okay! Thank you!"

Coco waddled her way over to the butcher and grabbed the bag he was holding out towards her, not showing a sign of struggle as she hummed happily to herself.

"That would be your first and last errand of the day, okay?" Jacques said with a worried look on her face, "I can’t stand the thought of you possibly collapsing in the middle of the street just because you pushed yourself too far."

"I’ll be fine!" Coco assured her before rushing out of the door, not waiting for Jacques to say anything else.

On her way to the town hall, the people around her were already decorating the exterior of their houses with pretty ornaments that seemed to be made with wood and were painted with pretty colors— catching any of the passerby’s attention.

Coco was reminded of the festivals back in her world, the people in their neighborhood also decorate their houses and the streets with colorful decorations every festival which makes the festival even more grand than it already was.

When she arrived at the town hall at the end of the street, right beside Old Jin’s store of appliances, she stopped outside of the door, peeking her head inside to see if she could see anyone.

Unfortunately, she didn’t see anyone except for a little child sitting at the chair in the hall.

"Hello!" Coco greeted the little boy with a wave of her hand, "Is any adult around? Is there anyone I could talk to?"

The little boy perked up when he heard her voice, his baby blue irises shining in wonder as he blinked at her and tilted his head, pointing a finger towards himself.

Coco squealed mentally, the cuteness of the little boy too much for her heart.

"Yes, you! I’m talking to you!" Coco confirmed the child’s silent inquiry which made him smile and nod his head, his face flushing with color as he placed his palms on his cheeks.

"Don’t worry! I won’t do anything bad! I just want to know if there’s anyone other than you inside. I don’t want to come unless the chief is available or someone who’s working here is not occupied." Coco assured the little boy, a small friendly smile on her face.

The little boy jumped off the chair, his little feet planted firmly on the floor before he made a run towards the door.

He stared up at Coco, his eyes wide in wonder. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

"What..?" Coco flinched, her heart racing out of anxiety of being judged by a child.

The little boy shook his head and smiled at her. "Nothing. Sala— Chief.. Chief Salamandara is talking to Uncle Rogue.. But you can come in and wait for them to finish."

Coco blinked owlishly and stared back at the child, her eyebrows furrowed. "You shouldn’t get too close to adults. It’s dangerous. What if you get picked up and get whisked away by someone suspicious?"

"I won’t get kidnapped." The little boy kept the same smile on his lips, but the amusement in his baby blue eyes is now evident.

"You don’t know that." Coco huffed out and tightened her grip on the bag, "You run up to me and get too close, what would you do if I picked you up and took you away from this place? Won’t you feel scared?"

The child hummed and looked like he was pondering about it which made Coco shake her head. "This is not up for thinking! There are a lot of bad people in this world so make sure to keep your guards up, okay? Especially with little kids like you!"

"Like me?" The little boy tilted his head.

"Yes! Kids are cute and people usually take them." Coco said, her voice laced with a matter-of-fact tone.

"Oh! So, you think I’m cute?" The little boy gasped, his eyes wide in surprise.

"All kids are cute." Coco corrected him.

"Boo!" The little boy pouted and crossed his arms, "You just said that I’m cute! Why say it in a roundabout way?"

"Nevermind that." Coco huffed out and looked past him, "When will the chief be free, the meat will get spoiled if I let it out like this for long."

"She’s about to finish." The little boy hummed.

"Actually, I’m done now."
