Chapter 113: Not what they look like

When Coco got out of the bookstore, Jonathan had just arrived, with two paper bags in his arms as he raised an eyebrow at her.

"I think.. You bought a lot?" Jonathan said, sounding unsure due to Coco carrying the heavy looking bag easily.

"It has three books that Alhai requested, two cooking books for Heiren, two baking books for Zaque, and.. Well, I don’t know what to get for Quizen so I ended up buying him a book about music since he looks like he likes to sing." Coco hummed out, listing the things she bought for her mediators.

"You really take care of them, huh?" Jonathan raised an eyebrow and tilted his head.

"I don’t." Coco smiled at him before she started walking towards the way they came from, excited to go back to the inn as much as she enjoyed the familiar sight of the Yolo Village.

Jonathan blinked, not understanding what Coco meant by what she said.

She doesn’t take care of them, but she’s buying a lot of things for them? She went down to the worst part of their village just to confront him because her husband told her to? That’s not taking care of them?

If that’s not taking care of them, then what is?

Jonathan raised a free hand and scratched the back of his head, a look of exhaustion and acceptance crossing his features.

It’s really hard to understand people, huh..? Even if some of them are your friends. He thought to himself, sighing deeply before following behind Coco as she navigated her way through the bustling evening street of the village.

When they got out of the village, Coco could barely guess that the time would be around nine in the evening or something.

Estimating what they will arrive at Yogusho Village, it would be around midnight or an hour past midnight.

Nonetheless, it didn’t take her a whole day to finish the quest and that’s what that matters, right? She didn’t fail nor was late so she would be able to receive the [Secular Inventory] that was promised as a reward upon completion.

The corner of Coco’s lips twitched just thinking about the possible feature the inventory has—

"What kind of book did you buy for your husband? Why do the three books look thicker and heavier than the recipe and music books you bought for the other husbands?" Jonathan’s questions had snapped Coco out of her imagination.

She raised the bag, opening it and peeking inside. "Well, I’m not sure about the content myself, but the title sounds pretty scary.. I’m just assuming that my husband probably likes to think deep about things."

"Can I see? I’m intrigued. I might take a note or two from your husbands." Jonathan stated, sounding sincere.

That was enough to send Coco into her cupid mode.

"Aww! We should have looked for a possible match for you back in the village of life! I didn’t know Jonathan was so eager to please his soon to be spouse!" Coco squealed and started nudging Jonathan with her elbow.

The rough and intimidating face of the man beside her flushed with color, an embarrassed look crossing his features. "Shut up, Coco."

"Our little Jonathan is embarrassed! How adorable! Don’t worry, big fella! I’ll really look for someone who will be the best match for you! You can count on me on that one, okay? Okay! Good, good!" Coco nodded to herself, proud that she could be the matchmaker for her new friend.

"Just let me see the book, man.." Jonathan grumbled under his breath, not willing to succumb to Coco’s teasing.

Coco blinked and perked up when she remembered what she was about to do. "Oh, yeah! Right, right— here, this is the book he asked to get me."

Coco rummaged through the bag and pulled out the thickest of the bunch.

The book was thick in volume and heavy, its bright red cover still fresh and smelled heavenly, its binding fresh, with the corners of the pages crisp and clean, sharp and perfect.

The newness of the book was clear for their eyes, the texture of the cover was pleasing to the touch, the smooth faux leather cool to the touch with the red color of it only adding to Coco’s satisfaction.

However, the gold letters of the title was the one that stood out the most against the redness of the cover— the font was easy to read which made Jonathan’s jaw drop when he read the title.

A Human Desire.

"It sounds complicated, right? If I bought this for me, I’m sure I would have put this on my shelf, but would never read it because I’m not into books that would make me think about life or something." Coco said, slinging the bag over shoulder so she has both of her hands holding the book now.

".. Your husband made you buy this?" Jonathan asked, his voice barely above whisper, as if he was so surprised at such a book being read.

Coco nodded her head. "Of course? Alhai loves reading so I think it would be normal for him to read as difficult as this?"

"No, Coco.. You got it wrong." He was quick to shoot down Coco’s statement and shook his head, a look of disbelief and.. Was that amusement? On his face?

Coco’s nose scrunched up. "I got it wrong?"

"Yeah, yeah.." Jonathan raised a hand and covered half of his face, shutting his eyes as his shoulders shook, laughing quietly to himself, "Pfft, that’s not a book to read to be smart— I mean, yeah, you will be smart for sure, but in other ways."

"Huh?"

"What I’m trying to say is.. That book is a novel." Jonathan stated after holding himself back, "But it’s an erotic novel often purchased by mediators because the book was about how to please their female partners."

Coco blinked.

She looked down on the book and stared, then looked at Jonathan.

"Pfft— that look on your face!" Jonathan laughed.
