Chapter 184: Arcana Trees

After our first day in Safe Haven, we paid a visit to the chief to inquire about the location of the "arcana trees."

However, before we could get to his home, we stopped at almost all of the food stands situated around the main road, where the beastkins sold their crops for incredibly low prices.

I noticed that most of them didn’t even use money to buy stuff but simply bartered using their own items, which made sense, considering this wasn’t supposed to be a mercantile town but a place for refuge.

To the beastkin that lived in Safe Haven, food and items were more important to them than money, so we started bartering with them in exchange for some of their crops.

The reason we were so excited to trade with them was because all of the ingredients they sold were almost impossible to find in the other nations since most of their produce could only grow in the jungle.

A lady with a fruit and vegetable stand had bananas, avocados, coconuts, oranges, mangos, pineapples, tomatoes, corn, and potatoes.

Of course, I exchanged high-quality items with them for their fruit, giving them some apples and redback boar meat.

Another beastkin had a stand selling spices, which was the first time I had seen someone with a store specifically for that.

In the other cities of the continent, any sort of spice would be sold at restaurants, inns, or big markets. But there was never a place solely for condiments.

The beastkin man, however, had an array of spices of black pepper, cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, and sugar cane, which were all very useful when cooking new dishes.

After we spent a few hours trading with the beastkins at the market, we paid Codo a visit and asked about the arcana trees.

Fortunately, he told us that the arcana trees were located pretty close to Safe Haven. However, the area was infested with dangerous monsters, so it wasn’t a place that the beastkin would visit often.

Codo asked us why we wanted to see the arcana trees, and when I explained that I wanted to make a weapon with it, he widened his eyes with perplexity, explaining that it might not be possible.

Arcana trees were so tough and sturdy that not even the ghost gorillas were able to knock them down, even when they towered above them.

He explained that even if I used magic to carve the trunk of the tree, it could hold so much magic inside that breaking off a piece was nearly impossible.

Still, I had to try it for myself, so after he gave us a more detailed location of the trees, my group and I flew for twenty minutes and arrived at the area he pointed at.

We were able to tell that we made it since the arcana trees had bright turquoise leaves that made them stand out from the green vegetation surrounding them.

As we slowly descended to the ground, we were suddenly attacked mid-air by "killer macaws," which were the same type of bird that had messed up one of the settlements we visited.

These colorful birds were flying quickly around us and trying to hit us with their beaks that were as sharp and strong as a blade, but after Melina and I released airwaves all around us, we scared them off and made them flee.

’That’s a pretty annoying species...’ I thought as we all kept descending to the ground.

There were hundreds of arcana trees around us, and after inspecting them, I realized that it would be harder to make a weapon from them than I thought.

<Arcana Tree

Sturdiest wood in the world.

Capable of storing extreme amounts of MP.

Can repel physical attacks.>

"Hmmm?" I pondered out loud as I took my mithril dagger out and tried to stab the tree trunk.

However, as soon as the tip of my blade hit the trunk, a spark came out from the point of impact and pushed my hand away with force.

"Did this tree just repel my attack?" I asked my group, who were all sharing the same surprise as me.

Melina placed her bare hand on the trunk to see if it had a similar reaction, but nothing happened. It was as if the tree could tell someone’s intentions towards it.

I placed my hand on the tree, carefully holding onto its bark, and I tried casting nature magic to produce a bo.

While the tree didn’t push me away or hurt me, it just absorbed all of my MP, not allowing me to use it to mold the trunk into a bo.

At some point, it felt as if the tree was sucking all my MP from my body and holding my hand stuck onto it, so I had to cast fire magic to let go.

"It must have a maximum capacity of MP that it can store inside, right?" Melina pondered as she inspected the tree.

"I suppose we could infuse MP into it until it can’t take it anymore... But we don’t know how much it can hold. What if it’s some crazy amount that we won’t be able to match?" I replied.

Melina and I were racking our brains, sitting down in front of the trunk while holding our chins inquisitively, trying to come up with a workaround to carve a weapon from the seemingly invincible tree.

The battle-maids and Yoru stood alert in case any other monster tried attacking us, while Vespera stayed with the princess and me, thinking of a solution.

My companion was the first one to come up with an idea, saying that we could try molding the earth around the tree and expose the roots, believing that they could hold some sort of weakness.

We saw no harm in trying, so Vespera moved to another arcana tree and used earth magic to create a massive crater in the place where the tree was standing.

Nonetheless, it was as if the ground that was covered by its roots was just as firm as its trunk, leaving a hole around the base with the tree standing perfectly still in the center.

The roots were visible, but they possessed the same properties as the trunk, repelling any physical attack and absorbing all MP infused into it.

’Alright. I’ll admit I underestimated these trees...’
