Chapter 183: Safe Haven

After we butchered the two ghost gorillas, we kept flying for an hour until we reached the new settlement. However, we were instantly received with praise, which was strange since they always acted wary around us.

The jungle beastkins explained that they saw us fighting the ghost gorillas that had been destroying their little town for weeks, so they knew they could trust us from the very beginning.

We still showed them the wooden pin that Bodego gave us to ensure them that we were allies and that only made them happier.

One of the beastkin went straight to the point, saying that their settlement was one of the last lines of defense for their town, which was the place they called "Safe Haven."

They managed to take down one of the ghost gorillas not long ago, but when two of them appeared, they couldn’t do much as their settlement would get caught up in the middle of their feud.

Nonetheless, he told us that those were the only two gorillas that fought each other, as the other ghost gorillas seemed to move together toward the shore, where Safe Haven was located.

It was obvious that they wanted us to go there as soon as possible, so we complied with the beastkins plead as they cried, saying that their wives and children were there.

We had already heard it from Bodego, but Safe Haven was the place where they sent all of the children and pregnant women so they wouldn’t be in danger with all of the monsters that were altering the jungle’s environment.

The beastkins told us that the settlement was on a certain mountain that was visible from high up in the air, so we started flying there while using wind magic to propel ourselves and go even faster.

The closer we got to the mountain, the lower we started to descend, still keeping a level above the jungle trees.

From the back of the hill, we spotted a trail of smoke, but we couldn’t see exactly where it was coming from until we flew around.

To our surprise, there was a pack of ten ghost gorillas that were trying to advance toward the town that was now clearly visible to us on top of the hill.

The beastkins had giant crossbows at the edge of their town and were shooting massive flaming arrows at the gorillas, which was why the monsters weren’t able to keep advancing.

"Well, looks like we made it on time..." I commented to my companions.

I told Gina and Carli to fly to the settlement and tell the beastkins to stop shooting the arrows so they wouldn’t accidentally hit us.

Meanwhile, my companions, Melina and I, flew straight toward the pack of giant gorillas and started dispatching them with lightning magic since we saw how effective it was against them.

The gorillas wouldn’t be able to move for minutes after being hit with thunder, so as we halted their movements, Vespera and Yoru finished them off by slicing their heads swiftly.

Before we visited the town, we butchered all of the giant gorillas in mere minutes and flew to their location.

The beastkins named the town Safe Haven. Even though it wasn’t an official name or anything, that was how they labeled it.

It was located at the top of the mountain, overlooking the sea, and the only way to reach the entrance was via an elevator that they had to move manually with a contraption that needed to be pushed by someone to make the platform go up or down.

Since we were flying, we skipped the elevator part and landed straight on the central plaza of the town, allowing us to take in a good sight of the place.

We were expecting a settlement like the previous ones in the jungle, which were quite humble. However, Safe Haven had stone roads that looked clean and well taken care of.

The houses didn’t look shabby or messed up. Instead, they were probably in the best state that we had seen in any other big city before. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

There were no carts strolling around. All of the people in town walked everywhere as their territory wasn’t big enough for them to require faster methods of transportation.

Gina and Carli met up with us, with a beastkin man who had wolf features following closely behind.

He introduced himself as "Codo," the chief of Safe Haven, thanking us for our help as Gina and Carli had already told him everything we had been doing the past few days.

The chief looked quite happy with our arrival, explaining that they had been holding off the pack of gorillas for three days and were running out of projectiles.

However, with that vast number of gorillas gone, Codo believed that they had nothing to fear anymore.

I mean, we had killed over ten ghost gorillas since we arrived in the jungle, and we were only tasked with hunting one at the beginning. The only reason we kept hunting them was because we realized that they were an actual threat to the beastkin.

When speaking with Codo, we told them about Zagor’s defeat and how Kalusia was free, making the man shed a tear of happiness as he invited us to stay at the best inn at Safe Haven.

"There’s an inn here!?" I asked, wondering if they received tourists often enough to require one.

"Heh, well. We don’t receive many tourists that aren’t beastkin..." Codo replied.

The inn was built so that other jungle beastkins that visited Safe Haven could stay there or any other tourist that managed to reach the place.

We took the invitation and rented two rooms. However, one of the rooms had four beds while the other had two, so I shared the bigger one with the princess and my companions while the battle-maids took the two-bed room.

Now that we were closer to the ocean, I remembered what I read at the Kalusia library in Alejandro’s diary, talking about "arcana trees" and how they were located near this area.

They were supposed to be the sturdiest wood in the world and were able to store MP inside of it at a much higher capacity than the redwood I had been using.

My redwood bo was left mostly unusable after my fight with Zagor, so I was curious to check them out.
