Chapter 148: The Phoenix of Kalusia

After feeling the incredible presence of someone deep inside the city, I used my voice crystal to send a message to the empress, saying that I was going to be venturing deeper.

Her group was still in the middle of fighting the lesser demons, so I didn’t even expect her to listen to the message at that moment, but I still felt like I needed to tell her what I was doing.

[Vesp, do you feel that?] I asked my companion with telepathy since she was flying much lower than me.

[That’s a Legendary Beast...] She replied with a serious tone.

She was only referring to the one presence that felt different from the other two, which was understandable since it overpowered the Terra Titan’s energy by a large margin.

Right at that moment, Valentina and Harvey came to me, telling me they were done taking care of the crossbows.

My plan was to send them to help the soldiers with the lesser demons, but I had to change it quickly, so I asked them to accompany me deeper into the city.

The knights already knew how to defeat a Terra Titan since we explained it to them after they arrived. Now that we knew there were four more versions of him out there, we needed everyone to know that we needed their hearts intact.

As we flew at high speeds with the buildings and streets of Startown under us, I spotted the massive crater in the distance where the meteor that gave them their starstone supply had landed.

The miners had all fled to their homes, leaving their tools and mining picks inside the crater that was coated with a dark blue rock, which was starstone.

However, there was one person standing right in the center of the gaping hole in the ground, and I could clearly see them thanks to their vibrant red-colored hair.

"Is that... The phoenix?" I pondered out loud, but not even a second passed when the ground started shaking.

We were floating high up in the sky, but the ground shaking was still visible to us as we saw the buildings of the city tremble while two incredibly massive edifications magically built up, creating two Terra Titans as giant as the one we spotted the first time.

They each appeared next to the crater as if they were protecting the mines over the city, while the red-haired man stood in the same place, glaring up at me.

Harvey and Valentina launched themselves straight at the Terra Titans, with their groups following behind as I descended to the crater with my companions to face the man.

When I slowly landed, I was able to detail the red-haired man with golden eyes that we had heard about since we got to the Droman Empire.

He was supposedly the man who had given the instructions to the bandits of Aridonia and Droman, and he was also responsible for giving them the black pearls that turned them into lesser demons.

"Phoenix..." said Vespera, glaring at the man with discontent.

"Queen Demon Spider..." the man replied, keeping a blank expression.

"It’s Vespera now." said my companion, crossing her arms.

"I see. So this is Phelena’s chosen this time..." the phoenix said.

I knew that Vespera and the phoenix were acquainted, but my companion told me that it had been hundreds of years since they had seen each other.

"How do you know about me?" I asked since he shouldn’t have been able to see any of my information. Even if he used a secret "inspect" spell like the one I used, nothing should have come up.

"Because it feels similar... I was a familiar once, too." the phoenix replied, his voice somewhat melancholic.

"You were Alejandro’s familiar, right?" I asked the phoenix again, but he simply looked down as if avoiding the question.

"So, you were here when this nation was founded. What are you doing now?" I asked again, now getting more serious.

"My duty... I’m protecting the people of Kalusia..." the phoenix muttered.

While our exchange with the red-haired man was happening, the two knights’ orders were in the midst of fighting the massive Terra Titans that had appeared on the sides of the crater, making the ground rumble every few seconds.

"What do you mean? How is this protecting them?" I kept bombarding him with questions as I focused on his energy, making me realize that he was not cursed.

If the phoenix had been cursed, I would have understood why he was doing the devil’s bidding since he would have been threatened, but with nothing tying him to Zagor, there was no reason for him to go this far. At least, that’s what I thought.

The red-haired man looked down with a dejected expression, saying that his job was to secure as many beastkin lives as possible. freewebnøvel.com

The way he said it was kind of vague, but then it dawned on me. If he had fought Zagor to free the people, he could have simply used his curse to kill them all.

In other words, the phoenix was working with Zagor in exchange for him not killing all of the beastkin. Instead, they were enslaved, which was the only solution that the phoenix found to prolong their lives a bit longer.

"If Startown falls, and I return alive..." the phoenix muttered, stopping himself and clenching his teeth angrily.

"I get it. If you return alive without the job done, the beastkin die..." I replied hesitantly since I didn’t like the direction our conversation was going.

"You understand then..." he said, as half of his body lit up in flames, creating a heat wave that reached us instantly.

On a closer look, his body wasn’t on fire, but it WAS fire. His right arm had transformed into a flaming wing, and half of his face was covered in thick, waving flames.

"Gina, get out of here and help the soldiers with the lesser demons," I said to the battle-maid, wanting to get her out of the battle.

She was hesitant at first, not wanting to leave me and my companions alone with the phoenix, so I turned to her with a severe expression.

"We need the soldiers to get into the city quickly. Can you do it?" I asked with a somewhat imposing aura.

Gina looked slightly surprised at my reaction, but she composed herself and, with a determined tone, said she would get it done, prompting her to fly away and leave the crater.
