My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World-Chapter 147: The Siege of Startown
Chapter 147: The Siege of Startown
After the reinforcements from the Sephyr Kingdom arrived at Kalusia, we kept our campaign going as the army of the Droman Empire and Aridonia occupied the towns and settlements that we took over.
It took us a whole month to reach the savannah, and I was feeling happy to leave the rocky area behind. However, one of our most meaningful battles would take place here since we were getting closer to the town where the starstone mine was located.
Gina told me that it was appropriately called Startown and was bigger than any of the settlements we had seen. She even compared it to the size of Speranza, which was larger than End Town.
It was the place where one of their most important resources came from, after all, so it made sense that it would be a nice town. Still, that only made us more nervous as we didn’t know what to expect.
The small towns we had encountered so far were quite clearly left behind so that their strongest units could protect their most important resources.
One of the beastkin soldiers we saved from the curse had information on the Terra Titan and told us that he had been split into six different pieces, meaning that there were still four that we had to take care of.
He also told us that there was a factory for black pearls in the savannah and at the capital, so we marked that location as one of our targets as well.
We had found plenty of black pearls during the month that we were occupying the small settlements closer to the desert and had turned most of them into golden pearls, as I kept periodically sending crates full of them to Melina.
Nonetheless, we weren’t sure if those would be enough to cure all of the demons in Startown.
Melina and I kept sending each other voice messages throughout that whole time, but that only made me miss her even more.
We had been away from each other for a few months, and while she said she had been making friends, she also expressed how boring most days felt at the academy.
’I just want to get this over with and see my wife...’ I thought.
__________
A few days after we moved with the army through the savannah, we found the city walls to Startown in the distance, surrounded by thousands of lesser demons guarding the perimeter.
The other two army groups led by the prince and the Aridonia sultan had crossed the borders and were making their way through the semi-arid, red desert, occupying the settlements that we had left behind.
Thankfully, there weren’t that many, so their groups were moving much faster than ours did when we first crossed the border.
The soldiers had the orders to use the golden pearls to heal the lesser demons, only if they could. In the case that they were left with no other option, then the soldiers would have to take them down.
I wanted to save as many beastkin as possible, but I also didn’t want to endanger the soldiers’ lives even more.
The knights’ orders were ready, and the beastkin soldiers that had joined us were eager to retake their landmark city from the demons.
The plan was simple. Since they already knew that we were coming, their army had been positioned to take control of their defenses.
Gina told us that Startown’s walls had large machines that could shoot large arrows, which they called "war crossbows."
’Right, I know what a crossbow is...’ I thought as the battle-maid kept explaining.
From the story she told us, after the meteor crashed, hundreds of years in the past, the beastkin were led by a man named "Alejandro," who was also the one that made the pact with the phoenix and the Terra Titan to protect Kalusia.
The man Alejandro never called himself the king of Kalusia, and his story passed on through history as the founder of the beastkin nation who never ruled.
He was also the one who created the crossbows that were used for defense of their cities, which made me suspect that the guy Alejandro could have been a reincarnator like me, but I decided to leave that subject aside since it wasn’t important at that moment.
Once we had our strategy set, we decided to wait until morning to begin the attack, or the lesser demons would have had an advantage in the darkness.
When dawn arrived, the soldiers were all ready in formation and started their march toward the city gates. Meanwhile, my companions and I were flying with the knights’ orders to take care of the crossbows at the top of their walls.
Harvey and Valentina split up from us with their group and went to opposite sides of the wall while I landed in the center, right under the gates that we needed to open for our army to get in.
Of course, they would have to cross through the sea of lesser demons to get there first.
After quickly knocking out the beastkin that were manning the giant crossbows, I told Vespera to bind them and teleport them to our closest camp, just to get them out of the battlefield.
As I moved, using lightning and wind magic to propel myself, knocking out dozens of beastkin at the top of the wall, Vespera followed behind, binding them and teleporting them to safety in an instant.
The soldiers had begun their clash with the lesser demons, and we had managed to get rid of the giant crossbows before they could shoot their first projectile at our army.
The beastkin in town were scattering and running to their homes to hide, which was a much better option than having them wandering around the streets.
I flew high up in the sky and used my "search" spell to see if I could feel anything strange, and my body froze as I felt three powerful individuals who were inside the city.
Two of them felt similar to the energy that the Terra Titan extruded in his two previous forms, but I didn’t recognize the third presence.
There was one thing I could tell, though. That third person was someone incredibly mighty.
