My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World-Chapter 149: A Flaming Battle (Part 1)
Chapter 149: A Flaming Battle (Part 1)
As the phoenix powered up his body with the most potent fire magic I had ever witnessed, Gina was flying back to the city gates, and the knights’ orders were taking down the Terra Titans on the sides.
[Do we really have to kill him?] I asked my companions telepathically.
[There doesn’t seem to be many options, but-...] Vespera tried replying but was interrupted by a fire wave that came our way, making us jump high in the air to avoid it.
Realizing that it wouldn’t be easy to communicate and fight the Legendary Beast at the same time, I focused on the encounter and launched myself at him.
I had my bo in hand and went for an overhead attack, but the phoenix stopped it with his forearm, creating a wave of wind and fire from the wake of our impact.
He followed up with another counter and surrounded himself in a vortex of fire, making me propel myself back with wind magic while also raising earth spikes under his feet. Still, he avoided it by transforming into his phoenix form and flying up into the sky in less than two seconds.
When I turned to look at him, I was briefly surprised by the majestic appearance of the phoenix as he extended his wings wide open, but my admiration was cut short when I saw the flaming projectiles that shot out from his wings straight toward us.
The projectiles were as powerful as a TNT bomb, with each impact that landed on the crater producing a massive explosion of wild flames that my companions and I avoided carefully.
I was looking for an opening to launch myself at him again, but Vespera caught up to him first and used gravity magic to drop him down into the ground forcefully, raising a cloud of dust right on his landing spot.
Vespera was still casting gravity magic, but a wall of flames suddenly appeared around the phoenix that canceled the effect of her magic, allowing him to stand up once again in his human form.
Yoru materialized from his shadow and let out a loud howl that was mixed with sound magic, making it incredibly louder than usual.
’What? Did Yoru learn how to use sound magic!?’ I thought.
Still, his howled was silenced after the phoenix flinched and quickly turned around, giving Yoru a flaming punch in the gut that sent him flying meters away.
Seeing my companion get hurt like that made my body react on its own, and before I knew it, I had used a mix of lightning, fire, and wind magic together to propel myself and appeared right next to the phoenix with my eyes hyper focused on him and my bo raised.
I didn’t say a word and didn’t think about anything as my bo landed with the phoenix’s cheek, producing a lightning shock that sent him flying to another side of the crater.
[Yoru, are you okay?] I telepathically asked my companion as I turned my head towards the cloud of dust that still lingered from where he landed.
[I can still fight!] he replied, using wind magic to disperse the dust around him and revealing his body, which had a burnt mark on the side.
Right at that moment, Vespera landed beside the phoenix and began exchanging punches and kicks, making use of the "martial arts" skill that she had learned from me.
However, the phoenix was able to keep up and not only defend against her onslaught of attacks but also counter with his own techniques.
’Does he also have the martial arts skill?’ I thought as I used that brief moment to inspect the phoenix.
< Phoenix
Legendary Beast
Former Familiar
Holder of the Phoenix Flame
Ashes can be brought to the Phoenix’s Altar
Age: 1,224
MP: 105k >
The "inspect" information was a little different from usual. When I first encountered Vespera, before she became my familiar, the information I got was pretty vague.
Although it did tell me that she was a Legendary Beast, it didn’t go into detail about her skills, MP level, or even her age until after she became my familiar.
However, I was able to look at some of that information when inspecting the phoenix, making me deduce that it probably had to do with the fact that he used to be someone’s familiar.
’105 thousand MP is no joke...’ I thought, but I turned my focus back on the fight as Vespera and the phoenix kept battling hand-to-hand.
At one point, Vespera’s kick pushed the phoenix back a few meters away from her, and I used that moment to raise an earth wall behind him, making him crash into it.
Without leaving a second for him to get out of the rubble, my two companions and I quickly jumped high in the air and crashed down on his location, but we were all pushed back when he returned to his phoenix form to free himself, and a wave of wildfire caught us.
It burned part of my forearm and face a little, but it wasn’t anything that would hinder my combat, so I endured it and kept focused on the battle.
Two of Vespera’s spider legs were severely burnt as she used them to protect her body. Nonetheless, she said she had six more and endured the pain along with me.
Yoru had quickly merged with the shadows under the phoenix, so he only received a minor burn on his tail before coming back out beside me.
The phoenix began another onslaught of attacks, shooting projectiles from his wings that exploded all around the crater, creating shockwaves of wildfire that covered large radiuses of the area.
Even when I tried using wind magic to remove the oxygen from the air, the phoenix’s fire didn’t disappear, which made me understand the line I had read from his "inspect" window earlier.
’Holder of the phoenix’s flame...’ I thought, wondering what was different from the fire he cast that made it immune to the lack of oxygen in the air.
Either way, I couldn’t let my mind trail off for too long, or it would have been over for me.
