Chapter 119: The Matron Of The Family

Brooke woke up to the subtle scent of detergent fragrance and to two strange women walking around Thane’s bedroom.

She checked under the covers to see if she was fully dressed. Her eyes widened and her cheeks flushed when she realized that she was out of her black dress and in a red sleeping gown.

’Huh? Why am I out of my clothes?! I don’t remember changing...’ she panicked, pulling the covers up to her shoulders. She blinked twice and realized that Thane was no where to be seen.

"Ah, Mrs Grayson, you’re finally awake." Said one of the maids, drawing Brooke’s attention.

"Yeah, I am." She replied flatly.

The other maid pointed at herself then at her colleges, "We nursed you the whole night into this morning, so feel free to ask us anything."

Brooke sighed in relief, they must’ve been the ones to help her out of her dress, and not Thane like she had earlier imagined.

"Thank you for doing that, and I’m sorry if I caused you any trouble." She apologized in a sincere tone.

The maids exchanged quick glances, wondering why the heir’s wife was apologizing to them for doing their job.

The blonde haired one, May, spoke up, "It’s our duty Mrs Grayson. And besides, after young master Grayson’s attack-"

"Attack?" Brooke pushed the covers down, "What attack?"

Her college, Wendy answered, "The young master’s health took a dip last night, he seemed to have coughed up quite a large amount of blood. We only finished cleaning up about an hour ago." Explaining the detergent smell from earlier.

Brooke gasped and covered her mouth. "No..."

May and Wendy could understand her shock, and felt somewhat bad for her, but their compassion could not override their duty.

May went into the already opened closet and returned with a blue dress, "You must have a bath and come downstairs for breakfast, Old Master Grayson wants to have an audience with you."

Brooke couldn’t believe her ears. "Breakfast? No. Mr Grayson is sick and probably in the hospital, I need to be by his side!" She argued.

"I’m afraid that’s not possible, no one is permitted not to attend a meal in this household, especially not the heir’s bride." Wendy explained.

"What? No one is with him right now? Do you mean he’s all alone in horrible condition and no family member is with him?" She didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Both maids were dumbfounded by the question, they had worked at the Grayson Mansion for nearly a decade and were used to the way things were.

"Please, allow us to take care of you." May said, shifting the conversation.

Brooke pinched her temples, ’It’s like I’m talking to a brick wall.’ she huffed. Quickly, she located her phone charging next to her and steered her wheel chair over.

Aggressively, she got on her wheelchair and made for the door, but both women blocked her path.

"Don’t get in my way." She hardened her tone.

"Mrs Grayson, this is a bad decision, going against the head of the house is-" Wendy’s words were cut off by Brooke.

"I don’t care about any of that! All I want to is to see him and make sure he’s safe. Nothing else here matters to me!" She lashed out, refusing to back down.

The maids exchanged worrisome glances with each other, they didn’t want to get scolded by Sophia, but they weren’t sure how to act.

Brooke was technically the future matron of the family, they didn’t know who exactly was the higher authority figure.

"Mrs Grayson-"

"Nothing else matters? How distasteful." Sophia’s voice sliced into the conversation, as she stepped into Thane’s bedroom, for what was the almost very first time.

"Madam." Both maids placed their hands in front of them and bowed their heads.

"Go run her a bath, now!" Sophia barked, snapping both women into action.

Brooke felt uneasy over the way the maids flinched, it reminded her of how she reacted to Ethan.

"And as for you, you will come down to breakfast, whether you want to or not. No one dishonours the head of the household, and I’ll have you understand that soon enough." The old woman said, her eyes unforgiving.

The longer she looked at Brooke, the angrier she got. The woman looked radiant, even after just waking up. And she carried about her an aura of poise, that made it impossible not to look her way.

Brooke inhaled sharply then said, "I don’t want to sound rude, but I have to see Mr Grayson, right now."

Mr Grayson?

Sophia raised an internal brow.

"Your husband had an...unfortunate, episode last night, but he was handled well by our staff. He’s in the best hands, so worry your head with more important things." Sophia lectured.

’Considering my position, it’s best to groom this woman to my taste, before Rosalind can fill her head with rebellion. I’ll have her dancing to my tunes, and bend her to my will. Perhaps, I could control Thane through this woman.’ she figured, assuming Brooke was easy prey.

"Handled? That’s your grandson you’re speaking about. Don’t you have even a shred of compassion?"

Sophia sharply responded, "It seems you weren’t taught properly how to behave and speak to others. Starting today, you’ll be trained specially by me on how to live and act like a proper Grayson."

Brooke felt frustrated talking to her.

She went on, "For starters, a Grayson daughter-in-law does not stay out late at night, dressed like a harlot."

"I don’t think this is the time to make a deal out of my clothing choice. Mr Grayson is sick, and alone, and I know how scary that can be firsthand. So please, just let me through, so I can see him-" she tried wheeling forward, but Sophia didn’t move.

She grabbed Brooke by the chin and said in a sinister tone, "I don’t think you follow. You are not allowed to wheel an inch out of the confines of this estate, unless I permit so, do you understand? By the time your husband is out of the hospital, corpse or not, your life will solely be in my hands." She pinched hard, forcing Brooke’s lips apart.

"Am I understood?" she demanded, her eyes void of any form of sympathy and kindness.
