Chapter 50: Divide and conquer - Part 1

Sienna listened to the senior executives relay all the information concerning their departments and the projects they were handling.

There was little to no divergence in the quality of work or the team’s spirit. Except for their worry about their future and how Sienna’s problems could affect them, all the employees worked hard, probably harder than ever.

Sienna attended meetings back-to-back without taking a break. Not only did she inquire about all the projects in detail, but she also expressed her gratitude for their hard work during tough times and for not giving up on her. Her genuine gratefulness and appreciative attitude not only won everybody over, but also motivated them to work harder.

The last meeting was with the General Manager of the finance and accounts team. Since no CFO had been appointed yet, she could only ask the General Manager for updates.

Sienna tapped her fingers as she watched the members of the finance team led by Herbert Stanley. Although their expressions didn’t give away anything, there was a strange tension in the room. Subconsciously, her eyes fell on Herbert who kept grinning to himself as though he had achieved something amazing.

Sienna’s eyes flashed in wonder but she didn’t say anything and proceeded with the meeting, waiting to see what the man was up to. It wasn’t until the meeting ended Herbert revealed why he was so antsy and excited.

"Miss Lawrence, will you be the CEO and COO too or will there be a change in the management?" Herbert asked, hiding his excitement behind a concerned face.

Sienna, who was still wondering what the man was up to, realized at once what was happening. Nobody but the concerned people knew about the new change in the top management, especially Simon being promoted to COO. So, a lot of people were eying the two positions which once upon a time would have been impossible to reach.

Sienna smiled, giving the man a cryptic look. "No, I will only be the CEO."

For a brief moment, the man’s lips stretched into a delighted smile. But he was quick to compose himself and probed slightly, keeping his tone in check, "Miss Lawrence, have you decided upon the people?"

"I have some considerations. I’ll decide in the next few days," Sienna said mysteriously, not giving away anything.

The Lawrence Group had a COO. Simon had signed the employee contract. However, the news had been withheld from everyone. So, all the employees assumed him to have now become Sienna’s assistant.

The only position that now remained vacant was the CFO’s and it wasn’t hard to see that Herbert was eying it.

"Do you have a suitable candidate in mind, Miss Lawrence?" Herbert prodded further, hoping to find out if his name ever crossed her mind.

"I have someone in mind. But I haven’t spoken to him yet. Maybe, you’ll find out in a day or two."

Herbert’s eyes lit up instantly and he clutched his trousers tight, his heart thumping madly. He couldn’t control his joy anymore. It was as if he had already become the CFO.

Sienna had given away two crucial pieces of information. First, it was a he who would become their next CFO and she was yet to speak to him about it.

He? Was that Herbert?

Herbert was over the moon and his joy radiated off his face. Now that he received the information he wanted, there wasn’t a need for him to continue lingering in the meeting room. So, he left quickly, intending to make arrangements to take over the position of CFO.

Finally, it was just Sienna, Kyrell, and Esme in the meeting room.

"Miss Lawrence, do you want to promote Mr. Stanley to the CFO’s position?" Esme asked once everyone was out of the room.

"Who told you that?" Sienna looked visibly perplexed and blinked a few times, wondering if she had ever hinted in that direction.

"Since Mr. Stanley is now the top-most executive in the finance team, I thought you had him in your mind," Esme said, unable to fathom what Sienna had in mind.

Did she not want Herbert to become the CFO? Then, who did she have in mind?

"I do have someone in my mind. But he doesn’t work for the Lawrence Group, not yet," Sienna informed, remembering the man she had met some months ago. He was perfect to be the CFO. The man wasn’t just clever, he was wickedly clever, ingenious and she needed someone like him to assist him.

Esme didn’t ask more, for she understood it wasn’t her place. Instead, she changed the topic and focused on the matter Sienna had mandated the previous night. "Miss Lawrence, I did as you instructed."

"When will we get the results?"

"In two weeks."

"Good. Ensure no one finds out about it. Let it be a secret until the matter is confirmed."

"Yes, Miss Lawrence."

While Esme returned to her workspace, Sienna and Kyrell walked back to her office. Amy wasn’t in sight and neither were the other three men.

Sienna wasn’t perturbed by their absence. It didn’t matter much to her for she had Kyrell. He was enough, she didn’t need anyone else.

Sienna didn’t realize how much she had started to trust and depend on Kyrell. It had been just a day since he started working for her and had already become a crucial part of life.

Plopping heavily on the couch, she kicked her heels off and leaned to the side until her legs were dangling. She was exhausted mentally. Handling two people’s work was taxing and she felt she had slimmed down a lot in just two days.

"Here, Miss Lawrence." Kyrell held his hand out and Sienna opened an eye wearily.

"Just what I needed," she mumbled and sat up as she took the bottle of apple juice.

"You may want to be wary, Miss Lawrence," Kyrell warned once Sienna’s shoulders relaxed and she leaned back on the couch.

"Herbert?" Sienna asked, realizing where this was going.

Kyrell nodded, his lips pressing into a hard line.

"I thought so too. He could be a problem in the future."

Since the man Sienna wanted to hire as the CFO wasn’t Herbert, he could turn against them in the future and try to harm her or the company. She had to be cautious.

"By the way, who do you have in mind?" Kyrell was intrigued. Who had caught Sienna’s attention? Where was he?

"Oh, you’ll find out in a few hours. We’ll be meeting him after the press conference."

Kyrell didn’t probe for more answers, leaving Sienna to maintain the suspense.

"By the way, are you fine with us having lunch in the company cafeteria today?" Sienna glanced at her watch. It was lunch break and she had a mission to accomplish.

"I wouldn’t mind unless there’s a reason for me to mind."

"Oh, don’t worry." Sienna flicked her wrist with confidence. "The food in our cafeteria is good. You won’t be disheartened."

Sienna wore her heels and stood up, patting her trousers to clear the creases. "Do you know what’s the best place to collect intel?"

"Oh, I do. I really do. Is that what you’re up to, Miss Lawrence?" Kyrell enquired, feeling excited all of a sudden.

"More or less." Sienna smiled, her eyes shimmering mysteriously. "And tell your teammates, including Amy to sit separately from us. You and I will be having lunch alone."

Now, Kyrell was confused. He couldn’t quite fathom why Sienna wanted his friends on a separate table. What was she planning?
