Chapter 40: Early morning freak-out

Kyrell was a light sleeper. He’d wake up whenever Sienna moved or stirred in her sleep and whisper sweet nothings to calm her down. This continued for a while until Sienna slipped into a deep sleep without any nightmares.

It was only when the rays of sunlight peeked into the room and fell on Sienna’s face that she moved again and Kyrell woke up instantly.

Kyrell glanced at her, worried that she was having nightmares again. But the woman remained still as she continued to sleep. Surprisingly, Sienna had let go of his shirt sometime at night. She wasn’t clinging to him anymore.

Waiting for a few more seconds, Kyrell gazed at her, observing her in this proximity. He had always considered her to be beautiful. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been attracted to her.

Now that he was this close to her, he couldn’t stop the ripples in his heart and his lips stretched into a doting smile.

Kyrell had a small secret that no one knew, not even his friends at Cheetah Corps. He had a crush on Sienna and it wasn’t a tiny one.

Kyrell sighed heavily when he recalled the first time he had seen Sienna. She didn’t remember him. But he did. It was four years ago at the California Global Innovation Summit in Sacramento. Cheetah Corps had been in charge of the security, with Kyrell leading his team.

It was then that he saw her. In a venue full of powerful men, Sienna’s commanding presence was impossible to ignore. She had the aura of a queen, impossible to ignore or forget. Wherever she went, people’s eyes followed her like a magnet.

Kyrell clearly remembered how some of the men had doubted her abilities and Sienna had put them in their places, showing everyone her might. Instantly, people started to look at her in reverence. From then on, they didn’t dare disrespect her.

There was another memory Kyrell hadn’t forgotten and it was hidden in the deepest parts of his heart.

Sienna stirred suddenly and Kyrell snapped out of his daydream instantly. His brows drew together when he noticed the change in her breathing.

Sienna twisted her body, moaning softly in delight. It was the first time since her family was murdered that she had slept so well. Although she had been plagued with nightmares, she had broken out of them quickly, unlike before when they’d go on forever.

Stretching her arms, she stifled a yawn. She was about to roll over and continue sleeping when her hand touched something. It was rock hard and warm and utterly unfamiliar.

Sienna woke up with a start and almost screamed when she saw Kyrell on her bed. Instinctively, she lowered her eyes and was relieved to find her clothes intact.

Kyrell didn’t know if he should laugh or cry when he saw Sienna’s amusing actions. She had been scared out of her wits before her expression changed into relief. What was she even imagining?

"What are you doing here?" Sienna hissed, glaring at him as if he was a sinner. "How did you come in here?" she asked suspiciously, glancing at the closed door. She always locked her room. How did Kyrell even get here?

Kyrell narrowed her eyes, eying her with displeasure. "Did you forget, Miss Lawrence?"

"Forget what?" Sienna’s frown deepened and her eyes narrowed into slits.

"That you were sleeping on the couch in the living room?"

"What bullshit! I never..." Sienna stopped suddenly, a distant memory flashing in her mind the next second. She remembered how she had been unable to sleep, the events from the day haunting her every time she closed her eyes.

Frustrated, she had gone to the living room to clear her mind and lay on the couch. She had no idea when she had fallen asleep. But she had.

"How did I get back here?" she asked, scratching her head.

"Easy. I carried you back here."

"Then, why are you still here?"

"I guess you don’t remember anything." Kyrell sighed, finding the situation entertaining. Sienna was adorable like this and he wished for her to stay this way forever.

"What should I remember?" Sienna couldn’t fathom what the man was talking about. Was there something she should have remembered? Did she do something she shouldn’t have in her sleep? Why was everything so blurry and why was he speaking in riddles?

"Miss Lawrence, I guess you really don’t know what happened yesterday night."

"What happened yesterday night?" Sienna looked at him apprehensively and Kyrell almost burst out laughing when he saw her dubious gaze. Did she have to look so lovely first thing in the morning? His heart was already not in his control around her. Her actions and reactions were only making it worse.

"Miss Lawrence, did you forget how you refused to let me go? I wanted to leave after I carried you here. But you refused to let go of me and even clung to me all night."

Sienna looked at him skeptically. Although she didn’t know if Kyrell was joking with her, she didn’t reject the possibility. There was a high chance she may have done everything he said.

Sienna tilted her head, her eyes still studying him seriously. Although she didn’t know anything about clinging to him, she remembered someone whispering to her every time she had a nightmare. It was like a cozy blanket that kept her warm on the coldest nights.

Desperate for more warmth, Sienna remembered clinging to something. It was as if she didn’t hold onto this warmth, she’d regret it for life. Who knew that it was Kyrell she was clinging to?

Kyrell smiled when he saw her expression. Sienna had recalled everything. He didn’t have to prove his innocence anymore.

"Did you remember now, Miss Lawrence?" he teased, quirking his brows playfully and Sienna glared at him, unimpressed by his attempts to pull her leg.

"Yeah, yeah. My bad." Sienna was flustered. Although she was glad that the man had stayed behind to help her, she was embarrassed at herself for having doubted him for no reason. He didn’t deserve it, not when he was the reason why she had slept so well after a long time.

"I’m sorry," she apologized instantly.

"It’s fine. How do you feel by the way?" Kyrell didn’t hold onto the matter anymore, his face losing his smile immediately.

"I feel fine," Sienna replied, smiling at him in gratitude. "Thank you for staying back to help me."

"Not a problem, Miss Lawrence. I hope you slept well."

"Yeah, after a long time." Sienna glanced at the window that was covered with drapes. The sun’s rays were peeking in, eradicating all the darkness in the room.

"What is the time?"

"It’s sometime past seven. You may want to sleep some more."

"Nah, I’m fine. I don’t think I can sleep anymore." Sienna stifled another yawn and scooted out of bed, prompting Kyrell to get up. She noticed the man was still dressed in clothes he had worn the previous day minus the jacket, and felt guilty again.

"Great. You may want to get ready then. My team from the Cheetah Corps will be here soon."

"So early?" Sienna was astonished. They had only discussed the matter the previous night and Kyrell had already taken action. Wasn’t he swift and efficient?

"The sooner the better, Miss Lawrence. We never know what kind of danger is looming around us. It is better to be careful," Kyrell said in all seriousness and Sienna agreed. Her life was currently a magnet for danger. It was better she remained careful and alert.

"Fine. I’ll meet you downstairs in some time."

Kyrell nodded before he departed from her room. However, he halted when he saw Frank outside the room. Nodding at him lightly, he was about to continue walking when the man stopped him.

"Mr. Winchester, thank you so much," Frank said suddenly, to his surprise.

"Why are you thanking me?"

"For helping Miss. I know what you did last night."

Like Kyrell, Frank too was a light sleeper. He had heard some sound outside and gotten up to take a look. He was surprised when he saw Sienna walking downstairs. Although he wanted to follow her, he didn’t and waited for her to return to her room.

But when she didn’t return after a long time, he was just about to take a look when he saw Kyrell pick her up from the couch and carry her back to her room.

Silently, he had observed all that was happening. Frank even knew that Kyrell had helped Sienna ward off her nightmares and sleep better, a first in a long time. So he was genuinely grateful to him.

"Don’t worry, Frank. I care about her as much as you do. I promise I won’t allow anything to happen to her."

"Thank you." Frank just smiled, glad to have another person caring about Sienna. She didn’t have many people in her life, people she could trust. So, he was happy to find another person Sienna could wholeheartedly rely on without fearing getting betrayed.

"Oh yeah, before I forget, Miss Lawrence’s new security will be here soon. You may want to make arrangements," Kyrell informed so that Frank could prepare himself.

"How many?"

"Seven perhaps."

"I understand. I’ll make the arrangements."

"There are two women in the team. Rest assured Miss Lawrence is safe."

Frank smiled, impressed by Kyrell’s thoughtfulness. It wasn’t bad to have men guarding her all the time. But Sienna needed a lady bodyguard as well. After all, men couldn’t protect her at all times. Who knew what would happen and when?

The two men nodded at each other and went in separate ways. While Kyrell returned to his room to freshen up, Frank went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast.
