Chapter 38: Ch 38: The Vale Mansion- Part 5

Selene’s body moved before she could think.

The fear of losing the twins again—the fear of watching history repeat itself—gave her the strength to push through the pain.

’Fuck! I lost my life once for this, and I am making the same mistake again? Did I not learn from last time? It’s not like I am a self-sacrificing person. This should not be in my nature.’

However, no matter what Selene said to justify this, she had made this decision entirely on her own.

She wrenched herself free from the bodyguard’s grip and sprinted toward Noah and Nora.

The monster’s claws were already coming down.

Her shoulder throbbed, her muscles screamed in protest, but she knew she wouldn’t be able to stop the attack with just her knife.

’There’s no time.’

Instead, she did the only thing she could. Fuck it! Selene was just the type of fool to throw herself in the harm’s way.

She threw herself in front of the twins.

Pain exploded across her back as the monster’s claws tore through her flesh. The force sent her to her knees, but she gritted her teeth and held on.

Blood poured out from her wound but Selene did not feel much of it. The numbness was beginning to settle.

The room erupted into chaos.

Guards shouted.

The twins screamed her name.

Someone yelled for help.

Selene barely heard any of it.

Her vision blurred, and a sharp ringing filled her ears. Blood dripped from her wounds, but she refused to fall.

Not yet.

It hurt so much, and yet, it did not feel like it was enough to keep her down. Selene was able to push herself back on her feet and yell her words out.

"Stop standing around like fools! Get the twins out of here!"

She barked at the guards with everything she had. It took a lot out of her to do that.

No one moved.

Selene’s head pounded. Useless. They were all useless.

Why was it always like this?

Why did she always have to be the one to throw herself into the fire?

She had lived through this once before.

But this time, things were different.

This time, she was stronger.

So why—

Her legs wobbled.

Her grip on her knife loosened.

She was running out of time.

Gritting her teeth, she sent a desperate signal through the system to Ethan and Zara.

’I’m compromised. You will need to help me get out of here.’

She just needed to hold on until they arrived. It should be possible if she gave this everything she had.

But her body was giving out.

Her vision swam, her breath came in ragged gasps.

Then she made a mistake.

A single misstep.

She lost her footing, her body tilting dangerously forward.

Selene braced herself.

The monster’s claws were coming again. She could dodge it, but that felt like such a pain. It would be better to take another hit than to waste energy.

She squeezed her eyes shut, expecting the pain—

"NO! WHAT ARE YOU DOING? DON’T DIE LIKE THAT!"

The voice tore through the chaos.

Her eyes snapped open just in time to see Noah running toward her.

Selene’s heart stopped.

What is he doing?!

"Noah, get back! You Idiot! Why are you-"

She yelled, rage and fear mixing in her voice. But her legs gave way as she yelled and Selene went down on her knees.

Her voice was hoarse and she tried to make Noah stop.

But Noah didn’t stop.

He held out his hand, eyes blazing with something Selene had seen before. It was the same look her had when he used his powers in his past life.

Then—

The temperature in the room plunged.

A rush of frost spread across the ground, crawling up the monster’s body.

Ice crackled and spread, freezing the creature in place.

The monster let out a distorted screech, struggling against the sudden cold, but it was trapped.

Selene’s breath caught.

’Noah... awakened. The condition changed, but he awoke. Then, does that mean Nora also...’

Her mind reeled at the sight of her younger brother standing tall, his outstretched hand trembling with newfound power, but she also felt troubled.

Did this mean it was impossible to change the major events that happened?

’Tsk, now is not the time to be thinking about all this.’

The monster thrashed, ice cracking as it fought to break free.

Then—

A burst of heat.

Flames roared to life, colliding with the frozen beast.

Selene barely had time to react before fire engulfed the monster, melting the ice in a violent explosion of steam.

Her head whipped to the side.

Nora stood with her hands raised, eyes glowing with a fiery light.

Selene felt like she was in a dream.

Both of them...

Both of them had awakened.

The monster let out one final, gurgling cry before its body collapsed, reduced to nothing but smoldering remains.

Silence followed.

Selene stayed frozen in place, her mind struggling to process what had just happened.

Noah and Nora panted, their bodies shaking from exhaustion.

Slowly, Noah lowered his hand.

His gaze met Selene’s, wide and uncertain.

"I... I did it."

He whispered.

Nora swallowed hard, looking at her hands.

"We both did."

Selene felt something in her chest tighten.

She had wanted them to awaken.

That had been part of her plan all along.

But seeing it happen in real-time...

Seeing them stand there, powerful yet terrified of what they had become...

She didn’t know how to feel.

A deep breath. She pushed her emotions aside.

’Later. I’ll think about this later.’

She could deal with this later.

For now, they needed to move.

Her legs still wobbled, but she forced herself to stand straight. Her vision swam and Selene felt her eyes close.

Now that things had calmed down, she could finally take some rest. She no longer had to worry about anyone dying.

"Selene, we need to talk-"

Noah spoke but Selene was already knocked out. Her injury was more than her body could handle.
