Chapter 473: Accepting (3)

"I wish we didn’t need to leave the orphanage, but I am glad to be here so I can sleep on a warm bed again," Annalise said, falling back onto the soft mattress of the bed in Rafael’s room.

They had left the orphanage an hour ago and came to the house belonging to the Callahans. Annalise came inside first to get washed up and go to bed while Rafael took all their belongings from the carriage to organise them.

For once Annalise did not mind that Rafael wanted to do most of the work by himself. She was tired after running around playing with the children. The children were so full of energy that it left Annalise feeling jealous as all she wanted to do in the middle of playing was find somewhere to rest.

She was someone to enjoy the outdoors, but Annalise missed a nice warm bed.

Annalise reached for a pillow and pulled it close to her body for her to hug. There was no better feeling than laying around in bed to get some rest. A fire was made and with her stomach already full thanks to the food given to them at the orphanage, she could go right to sleep.

The sooner she got some sleep, the sooner she could go back to the orphanage to give the children their gifts and do the test to see if she was fit to adopt Lydia.

Annalise no longer worried about whether she would make a good mother. Her only concern was sharing that she was from the border.

By now, since there wasn’t a big war at the border, no one should be going around talking about her people. There were more important things to talk about these days like celebrating that the king and queen were expecting a child.

"I should have brought some water in a jug to drink," Annalise muttered, a bit thirsty, but she was too comfortable to move now.

Should she move, she might not find back the comfortable position she was in now. She had to wait for Rafael to come out of the bathroom which would take some time because he went in right after she had gotten dressed for bed.

He might also be too tired to go for it since Rafael was not getting proper rest during their trip here because he was always awake, looking around for danger. If she was still awake by the time he came out of the bathroom, Annalise planned to threaten him that she would not rest unless he went to sleep.

Unfortunately, Annalise was asleep by the time Rafael came out of the bathroom.

Rafael looked at her sleeping near the edge of the bed with a pillow by her side, hugging it like she feared it would leave her during her sleep.

Before she could roll over and fall off the bed, Rafael walked to the bed and sat down in front of Annalise so if she moved, he would block her.

Rafael pushed her hair out of her face so he would get a better look at how peaceful she slept.

He envied that it was so easy for her to go to sleep. Lately, it was becoming better for him to sleep as he didn’t think about war and all the men he had killed. He had been purposely staying awake to keep Annalise safe so the change wasn’t noticed yet.

"I’ve sent for a doctor," Rafael informed Annalise even though she would not respond.

Four hours from now there would be a doctor here to give them the answer to whether she was pregnant or not.

Though Rafael was excited at the thought of there being a child inside of Annalise right now, what mattered most to him was Annalise being safe. He also wanted it checked that Annalise was fine. That a baby wouldn’t bring her any harm.

Rafael wanted a child that was created by the two of them, but at the same time, he could wait for when it was meant to happen.

He tried not to look too excited in case there was some way she was not pregnant. He didn’t want Annalise to think she had given him this news all to end with him being disappointed.

"Rafael," Annalise said.

Rafael waited for her to say something else, but nothing came. He thought that she was still asleep and was dreaming of him, but when he moved to try moving her to the middle of the bed, Annalise grabbed his hand.

"You need to go to sleep," Annalise said, opening her eyes to look at him. She had drifted off to sleep, but that didn’t mean she forgot about him needing to go to sleep. "I will not go back to sleep if you do not and you cannot fool me. Come to bed," Annalise said, making room for him to join her.

One way or another, Annalise was going to cure Rafael’s inability to sleep sometimes because he was haunted by the lives he had taken. She thought of making him think about something else before they went to bed. Like their future together.

Rafael did as Annalise wanted and joined her in lying down. He took the pillow from her hands as it was taking his place. He was what Annalise hugged when she slept. Not a pillow.

There was nothing either one of them had to do since he took care of the carriage and horses. They would only need to get out of their bed when the doctor came, they were hungry, or it was time to go back to the orphanage to be asked some questions about how they would care for Lydia and questions about their past.

Annalise tried her best not to let her eyes close before Rafael would go to sleep. "It was funny watching you run around with Lydia by your side. Your height difference was funny. Your back must be hurting from having to bend down for you to listen to what she was telling you. I will give you a massage later if you ask nicely."

"Just go to sleep and stop trying to force yourself to stay awake, Annalise. I can go to sleep fine after knowing that you are getting the rest you need. Your eyes are red with tiredness. I promise I won’t stay awake," Rafael said as he too was tired, but he wanted to see that she was resting before he let sleep come over him.

Annalise yawned, causing a chain reaction for Rafael to also yawn. "Then we should go to sleep at the same time. If I wake and find that you are not sleeping, I will not speak to you for a day. We need to wake up when the doctor comes," she said, revealing that she had heard him.

When he sat on the bed she had woken up.

"I see you have not lost your talent. The children were surprised by their game of hide and seek ending so fast. You hunted them down as if you were hunting for animals or your enemies. What am I to do with this competitive side you have?" Rafael asked.

"Love it just as you love me," Annalise answered and soon closed her eyes to go back to sleep. She could not force her eyes to stay open any longer.

Rafael watched her for a moment to be certain she was asleep and then joined her in getting the rest they needed.
