Chapter 381: Settling the past (2)

"I’ve been waiting for you to speak up and tell me about the knight you spoke with. What reason would you have to speak to one of his people?" Travis asked, staring at Siena sitting with a book in her hands. "I’m starting to think that you take me for a fool."

"He was there during my trip. He is quite close to Rafael so I thought to ask him about what Rafael would be wearing to the party. As the future lady of a manor full of knights, I should get to know his knights-"

"What for? Are you planning to become a knight? Why would you waste your time speaking with people beneath you? I have plenty of guards around my home and you don’t see me speaking with them," said Travis. freёnovelkiss.com

’They wouldn’t want to speak with you because you’ve been killing them,’ Siena thought.

Travis was going through guards and servants quickly because of what he was doing at night. It wasn’t that long ago she heard the butler speak of getting more servants before Travis would become upset even though he was the reason they were so short on servants.

"Rafael is close to his knights. I’ve seen him treat them like family. He would enjoy that I speak to them. The knights are not like servants," Siena answered.

"How touching of you to want to be like him. Now, tell me what you spoke to the knight about. I am not a fool, Siena. There has to be a reason you put some distance between you two and the guards I gave you. What is it?" Travis questioned, swirling around the wine in the glass he was holding.

He waited for her answer and as he thought of what she might have spoken about, a thought that ruined his night crossed his mind.

"Are you fucking him?" Travis asked, his voice loud enough to be heard outside the dining room.

Siena knew that it was coming if he found out she was talking to a knight because of his past with his sister. Still, she didn’t think he would be so blunt to ask what he did. "I am not. We only spoke," Siena answered, closing the book, but she didn’t put it aside in case she needed to defend herself.

Travis was looking at her as if he had lost his mind and was ready to get up out of his seat to attack her, forgetting that she was a guest he couldn’t lay a finger on. Since he could not attack her, she feared that he would go toward Kayla who was standing behind her.

Travis drowned the last of his wine as he continued to look at Siena. Recently, he had been reminded of his sister whenever he looked at Siena. He considered Siena to be better than Beatrice since Siena had been following his orders, but he should have known not to trust her around knights.

Travis raised his glass to look at the tiniest drop of wine still left inside. "I was foolish to forget. It is always the sheltered ones like you and my sister to forget your role when men beneath you come around, showing you a little attention. Is it because you are curious about what it is to be with a man?"

"I am not curious. I am not Lady Beatrice," Siena said before he could scold her for the actions of someone else. She did nothing with Logan other than speak to him. What exactly had the guards told him? Was it because she laughed at his words and actions? "You cannot get angry with me because of what someone else has done."

Siena continued to say, "I have never been out of your sight other than the trip and even then there was always someone watching me. I did not sleep with anyone. I have been doing my part in preparing for a wedding, but you always look to scold me."

"So you’ve finally dropped the act. I’ve always thought that there was something more to you. That you were cunning underneath that act of being the perfect lady. Now I am finally getting to see it with you speaking back to me," said Travis.

Siena couldn’t believe that he was turning this on her when he had just accused her of sleeping with someone. Why was he allowed to accuse her and expect that she would sit quietly as if agreeing that she did what she was accused of?

Normally she liked to hold her tongue and do as Travis wanted, but pretending was starting to make her feel like she was losing her mind. She had been on her toes around her father when it neared time for her to marry and now she was doing it with Travis. She needed a moment, even if it was just for a few minutes, to be herself and not be watched.

Siena took a deep breath to help calm her anger before she said or did something she would regret since Travis still had the upper hand here. She was in his home and though he couldn’t harm her, she didn’t doubt him having other ways to make her regret her actions.

Travis noticed that Siena had a lot on her mind, but as usual, she was not going to talk. He didn’t believe there wasn’t something between Siena and the knight. He had been burned by a knight getting in the way of his plans before and he was not going to let it happen again. It was Beatrice all over again.

It was his fault for not keeping a better eye on Siena and sending her off to be around Rafael’s knights. It truly disappointed him that she was turning out this way.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t touch a single hair on her head because his plans would then be ruined by her father coming for him. That was a headache he wanted to avoid. What he could do was hurt her maid instead.

"Do not be afraid. I will not hurt you," he said as he stood up. "I didn’t properly scare my sister out of foolishly falling in love with a knight so I will have to do better with changing your mind. If what you need is to satisfy your curiosity about what it is like to be with a man, I will help you. My nephew might be a little disappointed that you wouldn’t be his first-"

Siena stood up from her seat before Travis could get near. "You are not to touch me."

"You think I want you?" Travis asked, laughing at her foolish assumption. "I like my women to be a little more obedient. You’ve long turned me off from you. I was going to let you pick any man you wanted so you could end this phase you are in. End it, Siena. I will not be made a fool of twice."

"Master Travis!"

"What can’t any of you understand about not disturbing me? What is it?" Travis asked, turning away from Siena to who would be his target tonight.

"The knights are fighting their way inside with River Callahan leading them. We must get you somewhere safe," said the guard.

Travis stared at the guard, not believing his words to be true, but it wasn’t long before his laughter filled the room. He had been awaiting River growing some balls to fight him. "You want me to run? I’ve waited a long time for this. Lock up Siena and her maid in a room. See to it that they don’t leave. Our conversation is far from over."
