Chapter 254: Found (3)

"It still baffles me how you were able to become his maid with such an attitude. I wonder if you have secret skills or if it is because of something else," Kayla said, trying to figure out Annalise.

Knowing that Rafael was courting his maid thanks to what Siena told her when she returned from the ball, Kayla started to wonder if Annalise was placed as Rafael’s maid so she was near when Rafael wanted to bed her.

"You talk too much and you will be the one to get your lady in trouble," said Annalise.

Siena was worried about the man acting as her guard and rather than keeping quiet, her maid was speaking about useless things. Hinting at things that didn’t need to be hinted at now.

Annalise appreciated the maids at the manor more since they knew to only speak of what was on their mind when only the servants were left.

Kayla huffed, not needing any advice from Annalise. She was placed by Siena’s side as a child to keep her company so she learned for many years how to be a good maid and how to help Siena. She had to make it clear to Annalise that a lady like Siena belonged with Rafael Callahan.

Even if Siena no longer had any interest in Rafael, Kayla did not like that Annalise was picked over Siena.

Annalise rolled her eyes, wishing the woman beside her would somehow just vanish. If there was anyone who should be jealous of her having Rafael, it was Siena since she promised to marry him, but Siena said she was moving on from him. Her maid should follow suit and move on.

Trying to make her feel like she shouldn’t be with Rafael wouldn’t work since she had enough confirmation Rafael didn’t care about status and it wasn’t like Rafael would suddenly run to Siena if she was out of the picture.

If only she could reveal to Kayla that she had the same status as a princess, if not more. With how this side of the kingdom worked, Annalise was a future queen. Her status was well above Siena and Rafael’s.

Annalise stood behind Siena and Rafael who were still talking to each other, but stopped when Siena’s guard got too close.

Annalise once again wanted to give Travis a lesson. He should hire someone to be less suspicious. Siena’s guard wasn’t good at hiding that he wanted to hear everything she and Rafael spoke of. Annalise had been by Rafael’s side for a while now and she had not once been thought of as an enemy.

For the right price, she might share her secrets before killing Travis and all of his followers.

Siena let go of Rafael’s hand now that she said all that she knew. She was counting on him to make use of the information she gave to him. She was supposed to be leaving tonight to go back to Travis so she would be of no help to him then unless they crossed paths again without Travis around her.

She didn’t mind returning since in Travis’s home, she knew that everyone but Kayla was watching her.

Lady Everett’s home felt weird. At first, it was relaxing to be away from Travis, but then she found Lady Everett to be pretending a lot. Siena disliked feeling like she was misreading the woman’s intentions behind the questions she asked. Then when the men Siena saw at Travis’s home started to show up here, claiming to be guards Travis sent for her, the home felt even more weird.

Siena appreciated that Travis was not the type of person to pretend. When he was upset, she knew it.

"I want to pick out new shoes. Annalise," Beatrice said, looking behind the others to see Annalise. She didn’t want Annalise to fade into the background today. "If there is anything you like please tell me. Or maybe there will be someone to follow everything you touch and pay for it. It is what a lady likes."

Beatrice continued to walk ahead with River, not sparing anyone a look since Rafael should know she meant him. This was a good day for him to continue to spoil Annalise. She would keep Siena distracted when they entered shops so the two would not be disturbed.

Beatrice only wished they could get rid of the guard as the men gave her an eerie feeling which she told River about.

Annalise tried to force her best smile at the mention of new shoes. Unless there were weapons selling, she didn’t need anything. ’How would she respond to me asking for Rafael to be able to wear armour?’ She wondered.

It would be a wonderful surprise if Rafael would enter her bedroom tonight clad in armour. It might help to convince her to go a step further in their intimacy. Right now as she stared at Rafael in his casual clothes, she had an urge to yank on his shirt and pull him down to kiss her. The sight of him in armour would have her losing her mind.

Annalise lowered her head, regretting that she did not thoroughly enjoy the kiss they shared in his tent when he was wearing his armour. Now it was hard to get him back in it.

"Annalise," Siena said, touching Annalise’s shoulder to get her attention. "You seem lost in thought. I don’t want you to fall."

"You disturbed good thoughts. Is there something you need from me?" Annalise asked. She peered behind them at Siena’s guard who seemed to be looking around for something.

"No. I just wanted to walk with you. Beatrice and her husband are in another world. It is not easy to hold a conversation with Rafael for long since he goes quiet so I thought I would spend some time speaking to you. As a new friend, tell me what you know of the knight in front of the others," Siena whispered.

Annalise turned to look behind them at the knights who were not far away. They were keeping a distance to let them walk without the knights breathing down their backs. Her eyes went to Logan who walked in front of the other knights.

"That would be Logan," Annalise answered and then looked in front to continue following Beatrice. "Why? Have you fallen in love with him?"

"No! We bumped into each other last night at the ball and I thought it would be fitting to give him a gift as an apology."

"A gift is not necessary if there was an apology given. If it is the case that you are interested in him, just be honest. I must warn you that once he has a crush on you it is hard to shake him off you. That is what I have heard," Annalise said, leaving out Logan’s crush on her. "Other than that, he is not a bad person."

"I am not interested in him, Annalise. He seemed concerned that we bumped into each other. Like he would get in trouble so I only wanted to give him something to show that it was alright. I am planning to stay away from knights," Siena said, looking around at the shops they passed.

She did a lot of thinking about the future and with letting go of the little feelings she had for Rafael, she was glad she would never have to worry constantly about her husband going out to war. She wanted a simple life that did not involve drama or constantly worrying.

"I assure you that the two of you bumping into each other is not on his mind now. And I agree with staying away from knights. They are dangerous," Annalise said, eyeing Rafael who was yet to look back at her.

"It is a shame that they are so handsome. It makes it hard to avoid them," Siena said, looking over her shoulder just in time to find Logan looking her way and giving her a smile. She returned the smile and then looked ahead before anyone got the wrong idea.

If she were to find a way out of being pushed to marry Rafael, she didn’t want to be near the Callahans or Normans to still be hearing about Travis. Besides, a mere knight would be out of the question because of her father.

Annalise doubted that Siena was not the slightest bit interested in Logan. Now that her eyes were off of Rafael, she was realising that there were other handsome men around. Annalise thought the two were perfect for each other since Logan would be completely over his feelings for her and she would believe that Siena wasn’t interested in Rafael anymore.

Annalise stopped walking to inspect the stalls they were walking by. Stalls with charms like the ones from the day of the competition. Rafael was still using her ribbon and after all the gifts she received, she had to buy something for him. They weren’t as expensive as what he gifted her so she would buy him a few to switch each time he trained.

Before Annalise could pick up one of the charms, she heard a familiar whistle mimicking the call of a bird that she only heard near the border. A call her people mimicked to call for each other when their enemies were near so they could communicate without speaking.

"No," Annalise muttered, looking around the crowd to see if one of her people were around. This was not the time for them to find her.
