Chapter 62: Soto’s Past

The nurse, Abigail looked up at the projection of the mech the young man had finished within the span of three months. "This is amazing but can it really be compared with a real mech." She said in an interested tone, she was not a zealot when it came to mechs though she did take an interest in them in the past. She was not sure if the virtual mech was the same as a real mech to her it felt like a waste of time.

Alto smiled from where he sat up on the bed having his nutritious breakfast, "Well when le I can’t say it will be the same, it is substantially the closest I’ll ever get to the real thing at this moment."

Abigail sat next to his bed her eyes still looking at the design, something about it drew her attention and she could not quite place it yet. "So does this mean you’ve finally become a mech designer like the professor?"

Alto could not suppress the laugh that escaped his lips, he looked at her and said. "I don’t think just having one simple design done makes you a mech designer and I am no where near the professor’s level. I still have to create a couple of real mechs and sell them, it’s a hassle to even think about it. I don’t really know what the future holds for me now."

Abigail could not help but sigh and nod. "Do we all really?"

Alto knew that despite what he considered to be small feats his future to being an actual mech designer depended on the professor. He had two seniors he could not overshadow and besides did they really build mechs? Now that he thought about it the mech divisions used the same models they had been using for years, since they did not go to war there was no need for the designers to function and if they ever did would Alto ever be given recognition.

Abigail drew his attention with her next question and said. "So how is it that you spend the past months looking like a walking corpse and now you acrylic look very healthy and different."

Alto ate his food diligently, he pretended to be oblivious to the fact that she had addressed his new look. Alto had seen it also in the mirror, he appeared to be a bit more younger and healthier than he was before using the gene booster elixir. "Different how?"

"You look younger," she said boldly.

Alto feigned ignorance and chuckled. "That’s ridiculous, we both know that I’ve been working tirelessly for the past two months."

Abigail gave him a heartwarming smile, "That’s true, but I can’t be easily mistaken now can I? I have been monitoring your health for months now." freewёbnoνel.com

Alto groaned internally, he did not want to lie to her since she had been so nice to him, he also was not going to tell her the truth either. Alto instantly changed the direction of their conversation with a question of his own. "Tell me, how did you end up in the mech division? Did you win their favour or were you sent here?"

Abigail looked at him with a very confused face, her eyes trying to find meaning behind his words but coming out with nothing. "I came here because of the pay, you might not know this since you have been locked away here for years now. The planet, Soto is cursed, dying even."

Now Alto’s interest was piqued, truthfully he knew very little about Soto. No one in the mech division spoke about the planet only about the work they had. So seeing someone willing to talk so openly a out the planet seemed like a good pass time at least. "Soto is cursed?"

Abigail nodded, "I hear it happened a few hundred years back, then the planet was quiet and insignificant till the calamity struck. Apparently not many people remember but my grandfather at the time managed tell me the stories before he passed, they say it was supposed to be the end of the planet."

Scraping the last bit of food from his plate Alto showed her his full undivided attention, still his stomach grumbled a little bit but he could bear with it for the time being. "What happened?"

Abigail looked at the ceiling of the room as if trying to remember something or maybe she wanted to forget a certain something. Almost a minute went by before she started to speak again, "The kaiju came in droves, the gravitational field of the planet shifted, the sky turned to dark ink, it’s funny how no one even remembers it. It’s like the stories just died with that era, the elders wanting nothing to do with that cursed knowledge.

The mech pilots managed to defeat the kaiju and also establish the division here. They won the battle but the planet was forever changed, the earth corrupted, gravity collapsing in some areas, this planet ran out of water. All of it drying up at one time, since then Soto has constantly imported water and a lot of valuable resources. For years the mech division has failed to help much, they are only here in case of a kaiju breakout, not for the people.

My dream is to leave this failing planet and establish a small business somewhere. I would get married and have a kid or two. I’ve almost saved up enough for all the expenses."

Alto had been given enough to ponder on her knew Soto was an insignificant planet but he never knew it had such a tragic past. If all she told him was true then why did no one talk about it, how did the kaiju arrive in the planet, what was their goal, why did the mech division not help the people, was there an even bigger agenda behind the scenes.

"And what about you?" Abigail’s question caught him off guard. "I know how you got here but is there any dream you have if you could leave here?"

Alto’s eyebrows widened. "I just want to build the best mechs and explore the galaxy I guess."

Abigail dusted herself off as she took the tray of food from him. "From what I’ve seen I can tell that you are a commited young man, I have faith in you." Alto smiled and nodded.
