Chapter 58: The Gamble

Sophina stared at Edrin, his jaw dropped his eyes almost popping. He had just screamed causing everyone in the room to become alarmed but shortly after he waved at them to tell them he was fine. But Sophina’s mins was now easily put to rest, "Just who is Edrin talking to for him to be this excited." The thought of it being another woman crept into her mind but she cast it aside since she believed Edrin to be a noble man.

Edrin threw himself on the sofa close to him and looked up at the ceiling where a gold chandelier hung. "Bob, listen. I don’t like when I’m being joked with, it usually doesn’t end well for the said person. I found you amusing a while back but now I can’t say the same."

Sophina sat next to him, her mind trying to decipher who he could be throwing a threat at.

Alto was at the other end of the line, he had hoped that this exchange would be less talkative than the previous but it seemed that would not be the case. His buyer was beginning to doubt him and he could not have that, from the way he spoke he could tell a few things but one stood above all others. "From the way he’s talking he’s confident that he can get rid of me whenever he wanted, that means he really is a high standing individual and maybe from this star system. No that can’t be, there isn’t anyone as influential in this part of the vast galaxy."

Alto cleared his throat and cued in his Bob to take over the conversation with his made up prestigious accent. "Listen mister E, you heard me right. I have fifteen old mech designs each more valuable than the last. I could send over scan sheets for confirmation." He made sure to add the term valuable to the discussion.

Edrin rolled his tongue in his mouth and thought a bit before saying. "Let’s say I believe you Bob, if that is your real name."

"It’s not you dumbass, you named me that." Alto made sure to keep his thoughts private.

Edrin continued. "I am no fool, Bob. Am I expected to believe that you happened to come by fifteen old mech design models, now you’ll tell me you’re an antique collector."

Alto was beginning to feel himself losing the edge in this transaction, he knew he had to think fast in this situation. He knew Mister E to be someone who only heard what he wanted to hear so he used his words against him. "As a matter of fact I am, though not illegal, my sources are very secretive. I usually don’t tell anyone, you know what? I will send over five of the models for confirmation and we’ll talk from then."

At the other end Edrin almost laughed but for some reason he was caught between feeling played and being gifted. "Now what kind of a business man makes such a risky proposition, what makes you think I won’t take the design and vanish. That is if it really is as valuable as you say."

Now that was a good question, what Edrin did not know was that having those designs off Alto’s hands was not a disadvantage to him but rather a small waste of time. Alto continued with a proud smile and said, "Why indeed. That because I trust you mister E, I am a good judge of character and you seem like a good client do I am willing to stake my chances on this." It was Alto’s first time making such a gambit, even if he had nothing to lose he still felt like he was playing a risky game with a very powerful figure.

A smile grew back on Edrin’s face, though this was is second conversation with the Bob character he seemed to be even more intriguing than the last. Even clowns struggled to come up with a show newer than the last. "Send it over then."

Alto gulped down as he selected theee models and sent them, he made sure they were the least oldest of the fifteen. After sending them he waited for Edrin to receive them and verify them which took an hour, within this time Alto decided to open the online bank account he had initially planned to open, it was a rather simple process to fill. First he did a search of the banks within their star system and they all seemed to be small business minded. Alto chose not to invest his money in such since he did not want to have a limit on his future transactions, he chose an even riskier choice and opened a bank account with a bank from a more bigger interstellar star system. He believed the bugger the bank, the more money he could put in it.

In a while he was done and by then Edrin had called him back, he answered the call after a moments delay clearly expecting the good news. What came over to him was Edrin’s pleased voice, "Bob, you really are something. I will never doubt you again, you really made my day so I’ll be paying fifteen million darn. That okay?"

Alto smiled within himself, it was amazing to see that he was getting richer by the moment just by selling worthless junk. "I’m glad your pleased with my service, the price is fine. As for the remaining ten."

Edrin did not object to the matter any more. "You can send it over and I’ll verify their worth and send your payment."

Alto stroke his cheek clearly pleased with himself, he still needed to ask a few questions before he would begin working on his second virtual mech. "I would like to know a bit more about you mister E if that would be possible."

There was silence on the other end on the other end for a long time but Alto could hear him breathing deliberately, slowly. Eventually he spoke, "Let’s play a game then, you ask one question and I will answer. I will also do the same and you answer. The limit will be three questions and answers, how does that sound to you?"

Alto failed to predict that his mysterious buyer would use this as an opportunity to initiate another game but he was getting paid so he chose to follow along. "Then I will go first, are you an aristocrat?"

Edrin smiled slightly as the words slipped from his mouth, "Yes. My turn now, are you an historian?"

Alto wondered what type of question that was but he soon realised why Edrin had asked that. In this little game any of them could say something false and the second party would not know. A slight flicker in the voice of the second part would be enough to give them away. "No I am not an historian. Next question, what planet are you from?"

Edrin thought on whether to answer truthfully or not but he decided to say the truth in a sense. "Planet Solva. I would also like to know where you’re from."

Alto responded. "Soto, last question. What do you do?"

"I managed." Edrin said simply, "For my last question it will be simple. What would you think about working for me?"

Alto almost laughed but he managed to control himself barely, "Sorry but I have my hands full at the meantime."

Edrin chuckled. "Indeed, I’ll verify the goods and send your payment, it was a pleasure working with you mister Bob." ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

Alto smiled. "No the pressure is all mine."

After sending over his account details he wasted no time in getting into the mech design Opis Magnum. A light medium mech and his next big project.
