Chapter 85: Chapter 85

Mr. Leph seemed surprised—taken aback, because she’d been enthusiastic to get the job. Still he didn’t question why and instead reached out his hand and patted her hair.

"It’s alright. But take care of yourself." He smiled at her. "You are a strong girl."

Alexis immediately stiffened unnaturally. She slowly looked up at him. "What?"

"I’ve lived for almost two hundred years, I’m not stupid." Mr. Leph chuckled. "I can tell an omega when I see one. You’re not a beta, but I can tell something is wrong with you because then it makes sense why you have no scent and pretend to be a beta."

He watched her face pale and laughed in amusement.

"Relax, kiddo, Your condition is none of my concern. I don’t know what you’re dealing with, but I don’t have a problem with it. I’m not going to prod you like a lab rat to figure out because I’m curious. Just take care of yourself and...keep out of trouble, alright?"

Alexis stared at him and before she knew it—a tear dropped from her eyes, causing the man to pause for a second.

He sighed. "Let me guess, I’m probably the only one who never freaked out despite figuring out you’re not normal?"

Alexis shook her head. "No, you’re the only other person. You and my mother are the only ones."

"Oh..." Mr. Leph blinked and slowly nodded. "I see. Well, it’s all good. You have nothing to worry about." He ruffled her hair endearingly and patted her shoulder. "Take care of yourself, girl."

"Thank you." She bowed to him again and when she rose this time around, she turned with a half smile on her face and left the convenience store.

She arrived outside only to be met with Kaelis who’d spawned out of nowhere, jolting her. Her lashes flickered rapidly and she breathed out in relief.

"What are you doing here?"

Kaelis shrugged and ran his fingers through his dark beautifully tousled strands of hair. "I came to find you. I mean I’ve been looking for you everywhere, but I couldn’t find you. Somehow, I knew you were probably going to be here."

He stepped closer to her, reached out his hand, and grasped her by the back of her waist.

She blinked at him. "W-what are you doing...?"

Kaelis was amused, pulling her into him enough that she could feel his solid frame.

"You’re going to catch a cold if you keep standing in the rain like that." He put the umbrella he came with above her and grabbed her hand. "Shall we leave?"

Alexis stared at him. She slowly nodded and he began to pull her down the road along with him, his fingers slowly but eventually weaving with hers.

"The rain is windy and cold, but your hand is surprisingly warm. Small and delicate."

She blinked up at him, while still following after him as he carefully pulled her along with him. She mumbled, "Your hand is cold though."

"Of course it is." Kaelis chuckled.

By the time they arrived at the alpha’s mansion, the rain had gotten much heavier outside, falling with loud thuds.

Alexis followed Kaelis inside and proceeded to change into his knee-length coat which he’d given her so she could get out of her wet ones.

They walked through the foyer and proceeded towards one of the empty unused rooms in the mansion, though still kept as clean as every spot in the mansion.

"I’ll have to return to the staff quarter pretty soon, it’s ten in the evening. But give me a second, I’ll be back. Wait in here," Kaelis said to her.

She blinked at him. "Where are you go—"

He was gone.

She glanced beside her for Sereia, but Reia was nowhere to be seen. Must have lost her strength. She’d spent the entire week with her to comfort and soothe her and throughout the process, she could tell each time she got weaker no matter how subtle.

Even if Reia didn’t want to tell her, she knew she was losing her—this case of them having trouble merging was affecting her. They’d merged once that time and no matter how hard she tried over and over again, they couldn’t do it again. Neither of them could tell exactly what had even happened.

"Hey." Kaelis walked back into the room, the door left open.

He approached her where she was on the floor with her legs bow crossed and proceeded to plug in the hairdryer he came with.

Alexis eyed him.

"Well, you’ll catch a cold if you don’t dry your hair."

She chuckled at his remark and sat still as he grabbed her hair gently and began to blow dry it. They’d gotten a bit longer than the first time she ever came to the mansion, quite enough it could be packed into a low bun.

"Is something going on between you and the alpha?" he blurted out.

Alexis froze and cleared her throat. "Why do you ask?"

"What we saw back there that day," Kaelis said. "Everybody thinks something is going on. There was tension, you know. The way you talked to him, no one would dare do that, not unless they want to die. He wasn’t mad at you, he didn’t seem to care that you were in front of so many. So what’s going on? Are you...his lover?"

His voice sounded strained.

Alexis hesitated for close to a minute before she shook her head. "No. I’m not his lover. There is nothing between us actually. We just know each other, that’s all."

"Really?"

She shrugged in response.

"Then does that mean I can do this?"

"Do what?" She twisted her head to look at him, but what she didn’t expect was his lips to suddenly be on hers.

He was kissing her. Kaelis was kissing her.

Her eye grew as wide as a saucer, and right before she could shove him off in shock, someone grabbed him, snatched him by the throat, and lifted him off his feet.

She fluttered her gaze up and right there he stood, tall, and angry, the white of his eyes pooled on by black.

"K-keelion?"

He was strangling Kaelis with the sole intention of killing him.
