Chapter 70: Chapter 70

Keelion went silent.

The mood changed, falling, and for a second, she thought she may have asked the wrong question, but then he answered, "She’s...late."

"Oh..." The light smile on her face faded.

"She wasn’t exactly...very loved by my father. And she wasn’t always very happy, so she..." Keelion’s voice cracked a little bit, and he breathed out. "She took her own life."

Eleni blinked rapidly, eyes growing so sad, that it almost looked like she was going to pull him into a hug. "I’m so sorry, son. That must have...my goddess."

"It’s okay, it’s okay." Keelion shook his head at her. "It happened on my sixteenth birthday, so it’s been years now."

She was a mother. No matter how he pretended it was okay, she could see it in his eyes. He never got over it. He probably never healed from the loss.

It felt a bit strange why no one knew about this. The death of the alpha’s mother. Nothing much was really known about her, not even her death.

Eleni reached over the table and grabbed his hand, cupping and patting it with so much care in her voice. "You can lie to anyone else, son, but I’m a mother and I can tell it still hurts you till now. It won’t be easy, but I hope you heal from the loss. I don’t think your mother up there or wherever she is would want to see you sad. She would want you to be more happy, and I’m very sure she’s proud of you. She’s probably happy wherever she is now."

Keelion stared frozen at the warmth of her gestures, a feeling he hadn’t experienced in years—the motherly touch that he’d forgotten what it felt like. It was scary how similar she felt to his mother. "Do you think so?"

"Of course!" Her smile grew wider and more comforting. "Any mother would be very proud to have such a gentleman like you as a son!" Then she patted the back of his hand. "Eat more. Have more food."

Alexis paced back and forth in the dorm room. Lydon and Augustus weren’t back yet, but that wasn’t the problem.

She just wasn’t sure why she was feeling unnerved and every time, the only person she would think of was her mother. It was as if something could go wrong.

’Sereia?’

She hadn’t been able to reach her wolf for hours now and she wasn’t sure what was going on. Being left alone like this by her always made her paranoid, and maybe that was why she was like this right now.

Alexis climbed up the large bunk bed and took her phone from under the pillow. She sat down, legs folded in a bow, and proceeded to dial her mother’s number.

It rang, but no one picked up. She called again for the second time, but just like the first, no one answered.

Her fear spiked and with trembling hands, she proceeded to try again for the third time. This time around, her mother answered the phone.

[Alexis?]

She breathed out in relief and took a few deep breaths, before speaking, "Mom, are you okay?"

[Of course, why wouldn’t I be?] freewebnoveℓ.com

"I don’t know. I just didn’t feel good and I was constantly worried that something was going on with you. B-but I’m glad that you’re okay."

[I’m okay, honey. There is no reason why I wouldn’t be]

Her lips stretched into a smile and she asked, "Mom, did you get my letter?"

[Ah, yes. The alpha brought it to me. What a nice man] Then she said, [I’m glad that you’re doing okay over there. It’s been long since we last saw each other. A month now]

"You’re right..." she mumbled.

[Would you come and visit me again? I would like to see you, honey. You must look healthier and better now. Keelion told me you’ve improved too]

Alexis half smiled to herself, lowering her gaze to the hem of her suit that she was fidgeting with. "I suppose I did."

[Then come and see me, okay?]

"I will."

[Goodbye, pumpkin. I love you very much, always]

"I love you too, mom. Goodbye." She ended the call and climbed down from the bed.

It was extremely cold and windy outside, so a warm bath was going to be nice. Alexis left the dorm room and headed towards the room next to Keelion’s. She slipped inside, shut and locked it behind her, then made her way straight to the windows, pulling them open to let the cold wind in.

The rain was probably going to fall that night and that meant she might still be able to have a good sleep despite Sereia’s absence.

Alexis walked into the bathroom where she stripped off her suit jacket and shirt, leaving her in just the binder she used around her chest.

She picked up the toothbrush and paste and proceeded to brush, but amidst rinsing her mouth, something caught her attention, causing her to pause immediately.

Wha....

Alexis quickly touched her neck which she’d always been able to cover perfectly with her attire—at the mating mark on the spot behind and close to her ear. The mating mark was supposed to be there—it had always been there, that was where her mating gland was after all.

But it was gone.

The mating mark...

...It was gone.

Alexis’s feet shakily dragged her back and she had to clutch the nearest wall to steady herself on her feet.

"No, no, no." Not now, it couldn’t fade completely now.

Keelion would get rid of her—it meant he would. Her protection—her mother’s protection, it would all be gone. Where would they go?

’Sereia? Reia?’

There was no response, just like it’d been for more than eight hours now.

’Sereia... Are you there? If you are, could you please say something? Please don’t leave me alone, now. I beg you. I need you. Everything is wrong right now and I don’t know what to do. Things have gone wrong, please...’

’...Say something, I beg you. I’m scared...’
