Chapter 43: Chapter 43

Alexis struggled to breathe under his intense scrutiny, legs taking her backward.

His scent filled the air, but it was unpleasant, sharp enough to sting, almost like he was incredibly mad at her.

Long seconds passed in pure silence, her brain never able to comprehend the strange tension between them.

"Answer me, Alexis," he repeated, voice filled with accusations. "Why would you lie for him? Why do you care whether I killed him or not?"

Silence stretched, heavy, and oppressive. She took another step, but this time around, the back of her knee hit the bed and she ended up falling, grabbing the man along with her, her back meeting the bed.

Keelion fell on top of her, but he was quick enough to hold his weight off her, hands on either side of her head.

"I didn’t want him to get fired because of me."

He inhaled deeply. "You knew what I would do."

"He’s an orphan, he’ll have nowhere else to go. I-I didn’t want to be the cause of it."

"His life is none of your business. You don’t fucking know him." His blue eyes flashed. "Why should you care?"

"Because I do!" Alexis breathed out, staring up at him. "I didn’t want to ruin someone’s life."

The man’s face twisted with fury, his oozing pheromones growing potent and unpleasant.

"Even after he hurt you, not once...but twice." He loomed above her, radiating vitriol in pure anger. "Did you think I would never find out?"

His voice was menacingly low.

"Do you think I’m stupid, Alexis?"

"No. That is not it," she responded, as she held his burning gaze. "I didn’t mean to lie. I just..."

Keelion clenched his jaw, the vein in his forehead popping.

"You care for him, why? Since when?" he asked silkily.

Alexis swallowed thickly and shook her head at him. "It’s not like that."

"Then why?"

His voice was rougher, animalistic than it usually would ever sound as if he was losing his mind with every response she gave.

"Why do you care whether I killed him or not, Alexis?"

Her name fell from his lips as if it infuriated him—like she drove him insane.

Her fingers flickered. It was as if she didn’t know what to do, but then her hand reached up to his face, and in silence, he watched, clearly confused about what she was trying to do.

She pushed the tousled strands of white hair off his face, saying softly, "I don’t care. I just...I don’t want you doing that because of me."

"Doing what?" he snarled at her.

"Kill anyone."

His eyes surrounded by surprisingly long lashes flickered, a frown etching on his face as if he was sort of bemused.

"I’m sorry for lying," she said to him. "It won’t happen again. At least if you don’t kill anyone because of me. You didn’t kill him...did you?"

Keelion narrowed his gaze on her. "No."

Alexis’s lips immediately spread into a smile of relief, dimples pointed.

"That makes you happy?" he questioned, lost for words.

She nodded at him.

Alexis was going to be the death of him and he hated how he was getting aware of that fact. How could someone still be nice enough to a man who hurt her without a shred of decency?

Keelion grounded his teeth together and when he stopped, his canines were elongated, pressing against his bottom lip. He snatched her hand that was still subconsciously rubbing against the flesh of his face. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

She watched him, never jerking away even when it was clear he was going to bite her. It was as if she waited in anticipation for it.

A sharp inhale sounded from her once his canines dug into her wrist, sucking. And she swallowed, staring as he stopped, but licked off the bubble of blood with his tongue.

"You drive me insane, Alexis," he said roughly, breathing out. "So mad."

Her eyes swiped over to her wrist.

"No more."

"Huh?" she blinked at him.

"You’re not working as a staff anymore," he said, letting go of her hand and getting off her.

Alexis furrowed her brows at him and rose to sit on the bed. "What do you mean?" she proceeded to adjust her shirt, tucking the slipped-out hem into her pants.

Keelion glanced at her and began to unbutton his bloody shirt. "You’re not fit for that. It’s only a matter of time before you get hur—"

"I’ll continue," she cut him off and rose to her feet.

The man paused and cocked a brow at her.

"Excuse me?" he asked softly.

"Quitting can ruin everything, especially for me. I’ve made it this far, I can do it for one more month."

"Are you listening to me?" He glared at her, his hands fisting at where he held his shirt, still popping the buttons off. "You can’t even do anything. You can’t defend yourself, you can’t do what they can, you can’t even run far enough. It’s not for you!"

"I’m not quitting," she repeated, adamant. "I’ll try as hard as I can. If I have to run every day to make that possible, then I will."

She slightly bowed, before straightening up with a strained smile on her face. "I appreciate you looking out for me, but...there is only a month left here for me. I don’t want to mess up, I can try until then. If I quit...I think that would make me more paranoid and scared because then I’d have no control over my situation."

She fisted her hands. "Please."

"Do you think I’ll always be here?" Keelion questioned, voice low as he took steps toward her. "Do you think I’ll possibly always be here even when they haul you around, like today?"

"No."

Alexis shook her head at him.

"But I don’t need to worry about that."

"Meaning what?"

"You wouldn’t allow it," she whispered, keeping eye contact with him. "You would never let anyone touch me, even if you’re not here. And you definitely won’t give me a chance to lie again."

For a long moment, they stared at each other.

The blues of his eyes switched black in an instant and the moment her brows flew up, they switched right back to glacial.

Strange, intense emotion rolled through her, she wasn’t sure what exactly she was feeling. But they felt...obsessive. The way he was staring at her alone.

"You sound so sure," Keelion snarled. "Confident. And I’m not sure why."
