Chapter 33: Chapter 33

EIeni stared at the small photo frame of her and Alexis—one they’d taken a day before her sixteenth birthday before everything went wrong in her life.

A sigh fled from her and she was about to get up from the living room couch when the doorbell suddenly rang. She glanced at the door and furrowed her brows a bit.

Who would be coming to visit her? It was either Alexis or the alpha, though she doubted the man would, so that meant it was her daughter.

A smile she couldn’t hold back emerged on her face and she dropped the photo aside to head for the door.

Eleni opened the door, but she lifted her gaze, she wasn’t met with her daughter, Alexis, she was instead met with a woman she had never seen before. Bright blond bottom-length hair. Gray eyes and thin pinkish lips spread into a smile.

Who...was she?

She blinked. "Hello?"

"Hi." The person, Althea waved at her, tone soft as she cackled. "How are you, ma’am?"

"I’m alright." Eleni nodded but then proceeded to ask. "May I know who you are?"

"Oh, I have a friend occupying the apartment on the third floor. She told me a new lady moved in. This is just me coming to say hi."

Eleni stared at her.

Someone was occupying any of the apartments in the building? That couldn’t be right. The alpha never mentioned that. Also if someone did, why had she never heard of them or at least any sort of noise to indicate there were neighbors upstairs?

Still, she smiled back.

True or not, there was no harm. After all, what could this woman even want with her? They had never met before. "Thank you for visiting," she said.

Then she proceeded to close the door, but Althea put her hand in between, asking with a persuading look, "May I come in?"

"Come in?" Eleni blinked at her. "Oh, well I suppose, but—"

"Thank you!" Althea let herself inside, closing the door behind her. She glanced around and slowly made her way over to the couch. "What a beautiful apartment you have."

Eleni held her smile. "Thank you," she said. "Would you like anything? Tea? Coffee?"

"Coffee would be nice," Althea responded.

Eleni turned around, but as she left, Althea plucked the gun she had in her purse and pointed it at her.

One shot...and she would be dead. All she had to do was pull the trigger.

But she didn’t.

She instead watched Eleni make her way into the kitchen.

Eleni grabbed the coffee machine and proceeded to make a cup, but her attention was slowly drifting.

Who was she? How did she know she lived here? Was there truly someone else living on the upper floor?

It didn’t look like she was harmful, but there was just something about her that was making her uneasy. She was off-putting and not in a good way. Maybe she had been hallucinating, but she was sure she’d glimpsed some kind of malice in her gaze when they’d first crossed eyes.

No, no. This was just her overthinking. This was probably all a coincidence. She would probably have to ask Keelion the next time she met him if anyone lived above. That was the only way she would be able to clear the doubt.

Eleni took a deep breath and grabbed the coffee to head out into the living room. She met Althea still seated, but she was staring at the photo frame.

"Who is this?" Althea lifted the framed photo to her view, the smile she held never fading.

"Oh, that’s my dau—my son."

She didn’t know this woman and she would never make the mistake of ever endangering Alexis.

Althea lowered her gaze to the photo. "He looks awfully a lot like an omega." She met her eyes. "A girl."

Eleni grew nervous, but she didn’t let it show on her face. She cackled softly. "Well, I’ve heard that a lot over the years since I had him. Many people say he’s very beautiful, like a child that fell from the sky. A lot didn’t believe he wasn’t an omega." She let out another cackle and handed the coffee over to her. "But he is. He’s my beautiful boy. He’s a very good son too—one that I’m very proud of."

"I see." Althea nodded and took a sip of her coffee. "You must love him very much, don’t you?"

"Oh, I do. He’s all I have."

"All you have huh...?" Her lips angled into a smile and she took another sip, before keeping it down. "You make very nice coffee, ma’am."

"Thank you." Eleni beamed. "I’m glad it was to your liking."

Althea stood to her feet. She said, "I would have liked to stay more. But I have to take my leave now."

"Oh, that’s alright. I’m sure you have a lot to do."

"A lot indeed." She let out a short laugh and turned, making her way to the door. Eleni followed behind her, but when she tried to close the door, Althea said to her, "I hope we meet again..." She paused.

"...And hopefully, it will be as nice as our encounter today."

Eleni rapidly blinked, confused. "What does that—"

"Goodbye."

Althea turned and walked away. She headed out of the building but stopped by the road, just staring into nothing as if there were waves of thoughts going on in her head.

She still didn’t get it. Why would Keelion lodge this woman inside this expensive building, one that no other had access to?

It definitely wasn’t a favor for the geezer Ruderth.

A laugh slowly bubbled out of her and she threw her head back to stare at the slightly darkening sky.

This made her so mad.

Killing Alexis so easily might be some sort of mistake, because she had yet to figure out exactly what it was with Keelion. She had to be careful and so did her father.

However, this woman was a different case.

What would happen if she killed her? Or maybe got answers from her? Surely the woman knew something. They could get words out of her, and find out what they need from her.

But she also wanted to break Alexis. Just getting answers out of her mother wouldn’t be enough.

She had to do something much more than just that.

Althea smiled giddily to herself and took her phone out of her purse. She dialed her father’s number and as soon as he answered, she spoke, "Dad?"

[What’s wrong?]

"We have to meet. Change of plan."
