The Alpha's Fated Mate Is an Outcast-Chapter 17
Chapter 17: Chapter 17
"I don’t like this bitch!" Sereia stated, snarling at the woman while rubbing up against Alexis’s leg.
"Are you dumb?" The woman, Althea, rose from her sitting on the edge of the bed, feet resting on the floor. "I asked what your name is."
"Alexis..." Alexis balled her hands, peering at her eye to eye. There was this sense of irritation rising along her spine, and Reia was clearly feeling the same. "Alexis Ruderth."
"Oh? Your father is Mr. Ruderth?"
She seemed surprised.
Alexis nodded.
She stepped toward her. "I don’t recall Ruderth having a son. Or was I just unaware?"
"Seems like it."
The rough bite in her tone earned a brow raise from Althea and her lips curled into a smile. "Why are you here if your father is Mr. Ruderth? Last I remember, your father is one of the wealthiest members of the pack, one that even works directly with Fane."
"Fane?" Alexis furrowed her brows. Wasn’t she his substitute mate? Why was was she addressing him—
"Are you stupid?" The woman glared at her. "Are you unaware that no one is allowed to call Fane by his first name? It’s Fane for those close to him, people like me. And it’s Alpha for the rest. You’re very stupid for a rich man’s son."
Alexis blinked at her and lowered her gaze to Reia, who looked up at her as well. If that were true, surely Keelion would have had a problem with her, no?
"Uh...ma’am." She cleared her throat. "I would like to take my leave if there is nothing else—"
Crack. A slap—one that came out of nowhere, landed very painfully on her cheek, turning her head to the other side.
She rapidly fluttered her lashes, eyes slowly rising to Althea, who was glaring at her.
"Did I say I was done with you? You don’t go anywhere unless I tell you to. Where do you want to go when you haven’t even answered my question?"
She looked pissed off. But for what reason? Alexis was sure she had never met this woman before or offended her in any way.
"Let me at her, Kid, let me kill HER!" Reia’s voice screamed, ringing through Alexis’s head. But she didn’t respond, instead, she stood peering at Althea.
"My apologies," she apologized.
"Alexis, what the heck are you doing?" Sereia growled up at her. "Why are you—"
’Apology solves everything. This is only my first day working here, Reia. Let’s not cause problems.’
Reia blinked at her in speechlessness before slowly averting her gaze.
"You haven’t answered my question," Althea spoke. "Why is a rich man’s son like you working here?"
"My father thinks I need experience, so he had the alpha fill me in here."
Her brows rose. "What are you? You are definitely not an alpha."
"I’m a beta."
"You look more like an omega. But then again, you smell nothing like one." She stepped closer to her. "What is your relationship with Fane?"
The question caused Alexis’ face to screw up in confusion. "What do you mean?"
"The way Fane reacted earlier. He’s never lost his cool with anything or anybody, not even me. I know him well enough. So what is your relationship with him?"
Alexis took a step back. "There is nothing, ma’am. I’m a beta, like I told you. The alpha would never—"
"Oh, I know that. Fane would never take a beta. He’d want nothing with the likes of you," Althea scoffed in disgust. "I rather want to know to what extent he regards you to even lose his cool in front of people like that."
Alexis looked away from her. "I have no idea what to say, ma’am. The alpha doesn’t regard me much. He only allowed me here because of my father."
The woman didn’t seem all that convinced. She stood, peering intently at her as if she could possibly get more from her, and when it didn’t seem like she was able to, she waved a hand of dismissal at her.
"Get out of my room."
"Yes, ma’am."
Alexis left the room and shut the door behind her. Sereia looked up at her. "Why did you just let her hit you?
"I told you, we can’t cause any trouble."
"You should have at least let me bite her."
"What are you doing over there?"
Her gaze shot up to see Augustus storming towards her. She quickly bowed to him and straightened up the closer he came to her.
"I just came out," she said.
"And shouldn’t you be getting back to work?"
"Yes, sir."
She nodded and turned to walk away, but he grabbed her shoulder firmly, spinning her around on her heel. "Why is your lip bleeding?"
Alexis’s finger reached for her bottom lip, and really she was bleeding. "Ah...I um...I tripped while walking out."
The man’s thick brows blended in a frown, and he snatched her by the jaw, thumb grazing against the blood on her bottom lip.
She swallowed, blinking in confusion.
"Sir...w-what are you doing?’
"Stay still." He reached a hand into the pocket of his suit and took out his handkerchief. He tried wiping the blood off her lips, but the sudden familiar cold presence that had come around the corner into the massive hallway where they stood had them turning their heads.
Keelion stood, hands in the pockets of his midnight blue slacks, body-popping muscles under the fitted suit he wore. From the darkened expression as he stared at them, Alexis wasn’t sure when her body moved on its own, backing away from Augustus.
His smoldering eyes stayed locked on hers accusingly.
He kept staring.
Alexis struggled to swallow. There was something so dangerously suffocating about this man’s presence.
"Girl, I think...We’re screwed..."
’W-what do you mean?’
"Y-you don’t know how territorial alphas can be? You forgot Keelion marked you? Why did you let this thing in front of us touch you? I told you this Augustus or whatever is trouble! You don’t listen."
’I didn’t let him—it just...’
Keelion glared at Augustus like he was dirt underneath his loafers and arched his brow at her.
’Why is he looking at me like that, Reia?’
"You’re asking me?"
Keelion didn’t look away, and even Augustus was beginning to get uncomfortable by the tension, eyes dragging between him and Alexis. What the fuck was going on between these two?
He glanced back at Keelion.
Keelion looked away, and Alexis immediately deflated in relief.
’Reia, do you think we’re in trouble? I mean, it’s not like we did anything wrong.
Sereia looked at her with a very unimpressed expression.
"We? What do you mean, we? Kid, you’re quite alone on this one."
’But you’re my wolf!’
"So? It’s not like anyone can see me, anyway."
The creature vanished before she could say another word, leaving her standing in that hall alone with Augustus gazing at her suspiciously.
"I’ll get back to work now, sir!" she said before Augustus could say a word, rushing off on her heel.
That look from Keelion had been anything but nice. But she hadn’t done anything wrong.
She nervously began biting into her fingernail, her hand clutching anxiously on the hem of her suit.
