Chapter 13: Chapter 13

"Wake up," a female voice whispered in Alexis’s ear. "Kid!"

Alexis groggily blinked her eyes open, slowly sitting up on the bed at the pestering voice. It wasn’t Keelion—Wait, Keelion!

Every tinge of sleep in her eyes vanished and she began panicking. He’d told her to come out in an hour and meet with Augustus, but she’d slept off in his bed without even knowing.

What is the time?

She glanced around the room, her eyes landing on the wall clock. "Oh my..." Her mouth hung open at the hand that stood at seven p.m. She slept for ten hours.

How had she slept for that long without waking up once? What if Keelion came in there? He was going to be pissed off, and then she would have to—

"Kid!" the female voice snapped so loudly, she jolted, whipping her head around. And when she saw the bright, golden-furred wolf seated on the bed with a not-very-impressed look on her face, Alexis flinched so hard off the high bed, she dropped onto the floor with a heavy thud, the back of her head smacking against the marble floor.

She quickly crawled her way up to the wall, backing up against it with fear laced all over her face. Her light brownish eyes locked with the wolf’s bright golden ones, intimidating and almost hypnotizing.

"I can understand you’ve never seen a wolf like me before," the wolf whispered louder, tilting her head. "But why are you backing up to that wall like I’m going to kill you?"

"A-aren’t you?" Alexis asked tentatively.

"No. If I wanted to, I would have done that in your beauty sleep. I feared you were dead at some point, thought you were never going to wake up," she responded, amusement laced in her tone. "My name is Sereia. Call me Reia for short."

"Uh..." Alexis mumbled awkwardly. "Hi. Who are you? And—and what are you doing in that bed? You’re going to get it dirty."

There was a long pause.

"You look at something like me, and you think I’m going to dirty a bed?" the wolf asked, clearly offended.

Alexis defensively shook her hands at her. "That’s not what I’m saying. It’s just that I don’t think Keelion—I mean the al—"

"You mean our mate?"

"Our...mate?" She rapidly blinked at her. "What do you mean? What are you talking about?"

Sereia yawned, almost like she was bored by the conversation, but she did respond to her, saying, "Yes, our mate, kid."

"I don’t understand." Alexis shook her head at her. "Our?"

"Yes, our. I’m your wolf, that is why I’m here. You’re welcome."

Silence fell between the two, almost like Alexis was taking every single second to digest the information.

"No, you’re not," she blurted out.

Sereia eyed her. "And how so?"

"If you are my wolf, why are we separated? Why aren’t you one with me?"

"Beats me." The thing rolled her golden eyes. "I wish I knew why, but I don’t have that answer. I don’t have my memories and I don’t know why we are separated from each other, and really, it’s not fun."

Alexis slowly shook her head. None of this was making sense. "It’s not possible..."

"Have a conversation with the moon goddess."

"How will I do that?"

Sereia furrowed her face at her. "You can’t. That’s not possible."

"Then why did you suggest it? Is it supposed to be a joke?" Alexis frowned at her.

"You’re very strange."

She crawled off the wall towards her, keeping a weary distance from her while still being as close as she could get.

"If you’re really my wolf and we are separated, then why...did I go into heat?"

"Because you got exposed to our mate’s pheromones. He’s a supreme alpha, and unlike standard alphas, his pheromones are incredibly intense that omegas get drunk on it."

"But why did I get affected?" she asked, still unable to wrap her head around anything. "He’s my mate, yes, but you and I, we’re not—"

Sereia hissed. "I’m not exactly sure. Like I told you, I don’t remember a thing. But if I were to guess, it’s because we are half of each other. You’re the human-like part of us, and I’m your wolf. Separation doesn’t matter. When I go into heat, you will as well."

"That doesn’t make sense to me."

The wolf moved closer, her face near hovering over hers. "You and I make up the omega you are."

"I’m not an omega."

"Yes, you are." She snarled at her. "You’re an omega because I alone can’t make up the omega we are. We need each other, we are half of each other. Not even being separated can change that. I wouldn’t exist here without you. You feel what I feel, and I feel what you feel. So even if they can’t tell you are an omega since I’m not merged with you, it doesn’t change what you are."

"So...I don’t have a scent or pheromones because you are separated from me?" Alexis whispered.

"You do." Sereia’s jaw opened as she spoke. "It’s just that only our mate can smell it. If I had manifested properly with you like every other of our kind, this wouldn’t be the case. Regardless, I’m a part of you, our pheromones are mixed. And I’ve always been here around you anyway. I can’t be anything longer than ten feet away from you."

"What?" Alexis mumbled.

Sereia nodded. "I told you, we are half of each other, I can’t get away from you even if I want to."

"What happens if you force it?"

All amusement on her face vanished. "I’ll die and so will you."

"That doesn’t make sense." Alexis shook her head at her. "If that is true, then where have you been all this while?"

"Asleep." Reia sniffed haughtily. "I’ve always been around you since your sixteenth birthday when I tried manifesting with you, but couldn’t."

"So... You’ve been around me, just...asleep?"

"Very correct."

Alexis was reluctant, but she did ask, "Why...did you suddenly wake up now?"

"Because of him."

"Who?"

"Keelion Fane, our mate." She licked her canines.

Alexis huffed. "You woke up...b-because of him, but not me?"

"Very correct." Sereia scoffed. "Why would I wake up because of you when I know the outcome? We are separated, and like I told you, it’s not fun. But a mate... and not just any mate? A supreme alpha...now that was worth waking me up."

Alexis’s hands fisted against her skinny thighs, and out of the sudden rage she couldn’t swallow, she suddenly reached for the pillow on the bed, swinging it at her. It smacked heavily into Reia sending her flying off the bed with a heavy thud to smack into the floor.

A whimper fled from her, and Alexis was on her feet, rushing towards her. "I’m so sorry!"

Sereia forced herself to her feet, lifting her gaze to glare at her. "Listen, girl, just because I’m invisible and untouchable to everyone else doesn’t mean I am to you. I’m your wolf, and that means you can hurt me. Do you understand? So refrain from hitting me! And why did you even do that? Pissed off that I didn’t wake up because of you?"

Alexis didn’t deny it. Even if they were separated, it felt weird that her own wolf would abandon her for seven years, just to wake up because of their mate. That sounded...unfair.

"Wipe off that sulking look on your face. I’m here now, no?" Sereia climbed back up the bed and took a seat.

Alexis stared at her. "Can you talk to everyone?"

"No, kid, It’s just you, and that’s because—"

The door pushed open, and Keelion stepped into the room, stopping short at the sight of her, kneeling close to the bed.

She spun around quickly to pour her gaze on him and her lashes flapped anxiously at him, her lips sealed shut.

He cocked his brows at her, his eyes regarding her curiously, "Who were you just talking to?"
