Chapter 191 - Strange Rifle

Zack stepped off Aegis and fired up the thrusters, arriving at the massive square where the survivors had gathered.

At this moment, inside the Base, the resistance fighters had already been wiped out by Zack's mechanical army. The only ones left were ordinary survivors—more than 20,000 people, all huddled together, fear written all over their faces. They had no idea what fate awaited them.

Mechanical dogs patrolled the area, maintaining order and barking commands in the native bear language. Beyond the square, Zack's fearless warriors and terrifying robots stood in formation, unmoving. The recent battle had left their cold, metal bodies stained with blood, making the survivors even more terrified.

Boom!

Zack landed at the center of the square, instantly drawing everyone's attention. These people understood one thing—the man who would decide their fate had arrived. "Ego, are the numbers ready?" Zack asked in his mind, scanning the frightened crowd.

"The report is complete, sir. There are 21,432 survivors in total," Ego responded. "In addition, we found four mutants: two female red fox who surrendered during the fight, a young gray wolf changer who is still too young to fight, and one old blind man. The old man doesn't appear to be a shapesifter, and his abilities are unknown."

"Take them away." Zack's cold eyes swept over them before he gave the command. His main goal in coming here had been to test out his new gear and exact revenge on the Vanguard Organization. But now that the base was taken, it would be a waste to leave empty-handed. As for keeping the Base? That was out of the question.

First, it was in a remote area, crawling with too many mutated creatures. Second, there was nothing of real value nearby. Making it pointless endeavor, he was taking what was useful and leaving the rest behind. It was a selfish move, sure, but in the apocalypse, a leader's kindness should be reserved only for his own people.

Still, the survivors weren't completely out of luck. While the base had suffered losses, its high walls remained intact, and there was still plenty of weaponry. Zack wasn't going to bother taking these outdated guns and ammo, so at the very least, they had enough supplies to last a few years. "Bring the two red fox too. Assign two fearless warriors to keep an eye on them," Zack continued. "The kid isn't worth worrying about... but as for the old man..." Unlike other human groups, at least 70% of mutants here were shapesifters—. Out of the four, three were shapesifters. But the fourth—an old, blind man—was something else. "Bring him here."

A fearless warrior stepped forward, dragging the old man toward Zack. The moment they touched him, he started thrashing wildly, shouting nonsense about demons. "Charlie, right?" Zack asked, flicking up his visor as he crouched in front of the old man. "What's your mutation?" But instead of answering, the old man suddenly froze.

Then, as if he had seen the most terrifying thing in the world, he clutched his head and screamed: "AHHHH! Demon! You are the devil!"

Zack frowned. "What's going on?"

Ego quickly ran a scan. "Sir, his brain shows severe nerve damage in multiple areas. He appears to have lost his mind," Ego reported.

'In other words... he's insane.' Zack let out a breath and shook his head. "Forget it. Take him away."

Just as a fearless warrior stepped forward to grab him, the old man suddenly shouted something completely different: "Demon! The real devil is coming! We're all going to die! Zeta is the devil's flame! It will burn us all! Burn to death! Burn to death! HAHAHAHA!"

Then, before anyone could stop him, the old man lunged forward and smashed his skull against a metal pillar. His head split open instantly. Dead.

The sudden change caught Zack off guard. For a brief moment, silence fell over the square. But in the end, with Victor and the others gone, there was no one left in the Base who knew the truth about Charlie's abilities .And his final words? They died with him. Zack didn't bother thinking too much about a madman's nonsense.

After the whole ordeal with old Charlie, Zack lost interest in further questioning. He ordered the selected survivors to be taken aboard Aegis, then turned and walked away from the square. Of course, Aegis was massive, but it wasn't big enough to take the entire mechanical legion, fearless warriors, and over 700 people in one trip. So, Zack decided to leave the robots and warriors behind for now. "Ego, have Aegis come back for another trip later," Zack said, heading toward the underground entrance of the Vanguard Organization's laboratory.

The moment he stepped inside, the overwhelming stench of blood hit him like a wave. Severed limbs, broken bodies, and scattered organs covered the floor in a gruesome display of carnage. "People always try to control power they don't understand," Zack muttered indifferently, switching off his suit's smell sensors before moving deeper inside.

There was no doubt—this massacre was the work of Biological Weapon No.01. The uncontrollable monster had turned on its creators the moment it was released, wiping them out in a brutal frenzy. Zack scanned the wreckage, his eyes landing on several files and data terminals. "Blackwater weaponization experiment records... Mutant gene test sequences... All valuable experimental equipment—mark it for transport," Zack ordered as he walked through the lab, tagging anything that could be useful.

Most of the Vanguard Organization's research was worthless to him. Their projects revolved around outdated methods—body modifications, unstable serums, and crude cloning attempts. None of it impressed him. But knowing the enemy's technology was never a bad thing. Even useless research had its value in war. After scanning the entire lab, Zack let out a sigh. "That's all? What a waste of time." He had expected more from an advanced research facility, but in the end, there wasn't much worth taking.

Just as he was about to leave, his eyes landed on something interesting—a strange-looking rifle. He picked it up, examining its sleek, futuristic design before casually pulling the trigger.

Boom!

A red energy beam blasted out, punching a fist-sized hole into the reinforced concrete wall. "Well, this is interesting," Zack murmured, giving the gun a closer look. "Take it back. We'll do some reverse engineering," he said, tucking the weapon under his arm before leaving the lab.

Meanwhile, outside, the mechanical dogs had already loaded the 721 frightened survivors onto Aegis. The massive aircraft, covering several thousand square meters, had its cargo bay packed to the brim. The front sections—living quarters and control areas—remained mostly empty, but the back was filled with people. "Let's go," Zack said as he stepped aboard. With the last of the lab equipment secured, Aegis's engines roared to life.

Boom—!

The four massive turbines fired up, generating a hurricane-like force that blew away everything on the ground. Within seconds, the colossal aircraft, weighing hundreds of tons, lifted off and soared into the sky.
