Chapter 68: Final Fight [1]

The magic circle and countless mana beasts and drifters that hovered in the sky were a sight to witness.

Maybe what Amanda had said about it being the end times was actually real, but none of that mattered.

Whether it was the end times or the countless creatures that were stationed around the magic circle, I was ready to bring them all down.

I glanced at the group that were still stunned by what had unfolded and without wasting a breath, I moved into the pile of debris, sending one of my saints first to slip through the gaps of the demolished structure.

It didn’t take long, maybe about twenty seconds or so, for my saints to find the lab I was searching for, though I couldn’t exactly call it a lab now.

’Shiki, bring those items to me.’ At my command Shiki moved swiftly to the wreckage and began digging at an alarming pace.

Explosions echoed from all directions as the monsters began descending on the academy like a rainstorm.

"What the hell do we do?" Ivy asked, trying her best to get on her feet.

Reozaki clenched his teeth and with sheer resolve, he rose to his feet, his lifeless black pupils swirling within like a sketch of a black circle.

He turned to me and with steady steps drew close to where I was, the rest of the group watched as he approached me, but even when he reached in front of me he didn’t stop.

"So we just have to kill them all, right?" he asked, passing my shoulder and stepping behind me.

I couldn’t help but smile, at least one person hadn’t lost their composure when it was time for action, not theory.

"Yeah," I answered calmly, and he tapped me on my left shoulder with his fist.

Sparks of light burst in the air, as his blade materialized. "Then leave it to me."

Loud roars and snarls surged toward our direction as three monsters swooped down on us.

A D-rank and an E-rank mana beast and one sequence eight drifter.

Reozaki’s katana, which he had dismissed before the building collapsed, materialized once more, as his spiralling eyes grew even darker.

Dark shadowy mana engulfed him, as he channeled a portion of it into his blade.

He lunged forward at blinding speed as the flying drifter spat hellfire from its mouth.

Reozaki didn’t dodge it, instead he raised the tip of his blade toward the flames and just like a black hole, a massive orb-like rupture appeared at the tip and devoured the flames entirely.

The area the flames were supposed to engulf was now filled with pure darkness.

The drifter was dazed for a moment, but that gave him just enough time to drive his blade into the massive creature’s weak point, a single gap between its neck and head.

The monster shrieked, flailing wildly.

Reozaki gripped his sword tightly as the monster’s final struggle for life faded, and with a loud "boom," it crashed into the ground, sending dust soaring.

The silhouette of the young man became visible as the smoke cleared, he sleeked his jet-black hair back, standing on the drifter’s corpse, his eyes locked on his comrades.

He clicked his tongue and looked away, turning to the next set of monsters charging toward him.

Jisoo’s teeth ground against each other as she rose to her feet. "No way I’m letting that lazy ass get all the spotlight."

She instantly summoned twin daggers and lunged toward the other monster.

Ivy, seeing her friends and fellow classmates move, stood up herself and stepped in to join the assault.

My eyes shifted to the three seniors who were still frozen.

I sighed. ’Note to self: make upperclassmen more courageous next time I’m writing.’

The tingling of my saint sense activated as Shiki pointed at what he had found. I immediately ran over to where he stood and sent a smaller saint of a strange type of mana beast into the narrow opening.

The saint swiftly slipped inside and almost instantly emerged with two items.

A pendant that bore the insignia of the academy etched into a ruby, and a golden talisman with the symbol of a Chinese character at its center.

Right now I needed to get this to Reni, but I doubted Deerheart would wait for me, and considering the plan I made with the student council president was about to kick off, I didn’t have time to go elsewhere.

I did trust Reni, but I didn’t want something bad to happen to her, just the thought of it made my chest feel heavy like a thousand blades were piercing into it.

Steeling my thoughts, I shut my eyes, ready to activate shadow transfer for the first time, when a hand gripped my wrist.

Halting the talent’s activation, I turned and faced Amanda.

She looked at me for a moment, then averted her gaze, her face a bit flushed. "Let me help too."

I narrowed my eyes. It surprised me that any of the higher years could even move at this point, except the third years, of course, since they too had endured a lot.

But that didn’t mean all the third years were in the academy during the red dungeon incident, an example being senior Amanda here.

’It’s not like I have a choice.’ I nodded slightly, and handed her the talisman.

It may have been in my best interest to have more fighters in this zone since President Razor was going to trigger the mass teleportation we had planned.

But still...

"I want you to go to the administrative office and give this to any of my classmates who are helping Re... No, Princess Frieren."

She nodded in response, studied the paper, and began moving. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com

Turning back to watch her figure shrinking into the distance, I sighed.

Now I could ease my thoughts and focus on wrapping up the arc.

’I hope Matt has finished fighting Hari and can go and help Reni.’

Battling a sequence five drifter was no minor feat for anyone that wasn’t an S-rank or a cheat A-rank like Neko-sensei.

Since sequence five drifters were only slightly weaker than S-ranks, for a bunch of B-ranks to even consider confronting it, they had to have devised some sort of strategy.

"Haaaah! I should stop worrying about others when I have my own problem."

Deerheart at present was a low- to mid-tier A-rank who could go beyond that with help from the demon’s contract.

But I wasn’t planning on losing, even if my opponent was a saint.

(Back at the administrative office)

The chaos and explosions escalated just as Frieren had expected, beasts of various kinds slowly infiltrating the academy through rifts in space.

It had been about five minutes since she parted ways with Kai, and she had successfully evacuated most of the unawakened staff and given the remaining awakened students their assignments.

"Princess, what do we do next?"

Frieren placed a hand on her chin. She knew a moment like this would come after Kai finished telling her about what would happen a few days ago, since he wanted them to use what he knew and her vague visions to create a perfect countermeasure.

Glancing at the ten or so students around her, each from different high-ranking families, then at Anica, who had exited the dungeon to aid her, she addressed them.

"I know most of you might be afraid or even overwhelmed and disoriented by what is happening." She paused, then smiled softly. Her smile wasn’t just gentle, it was the kind of smile someone wore after having seen it all, both physically and mentally drained.

She continued. "And it’s completely natural to feel that way." She looked at the chaos around them, then at the administrative office in front of them. "But are you going to sit around and do nothing?"

Even though Frieren was speaking like she was addressing everyone’s hearts, including her own, it wasn’t sincere. Maybe someone like Kai could’ve read between the lines, but the other students weren’t that sharp.

’Darling, I’m deceiving my subjects because of you. Oh well, at least we’ll go to hell together.’

She snapped out of her daydream and looked at the students with determination. "I can promise you that none of you will perish in this battle. This is just a trial for those of us who seek to rise as mages."

She could feel admiration simmering in the students’ eyes. "As the princess of the empire, I vow that everyone who carries out this mission will receive recognition... But those who dare retreat will perish."

Her words sank into their hearts, etched into their very souls.

The students fell silent and stayed by the building. They didn’t know what was inside or what awaited them, but their only path was forward.

Before long, the students completed their formation, their bodies clad in combat suits and their individual vestiges gripped tightly in their hands.

As soon as they stepped into the building, the world began to warp as the structure started spiraling, reshaping the positions of the doors around them.

’It has begun.’

The subjugation of the sequence five drifter, Drumheart, and the rescue of Princess Rachel Von Silver.

A plan crafted to both empower the princess, thus expanding Kai’s influence, and make both England and Germany owe them.

The last thing Frieren saw before the door they entered turned into a wall, was a golden magic circle spread across the academy, and monsters and students beginning to teleport with each radiant glow.
