Chapter 66: Lord Of Shadows

"So, Taylor sunbae, what do we do next?" Ivy asked Taylor, who sat near the window, watching the chaos unfold in the academy.

He turned to her for a brief moment, his jaw clenched tightly. "I think we..."

Before he could finish speaking, one of the scouts they had sent out rushed into the room and glanced around from Reozaki, who leaned on the door he came through, to Jisoo who sat nearby, then to Amanda who was seated at the center.

He then moved closer to Taylor, Ivy, and Eldon, who sat at the end next to the window.

"Senior Taylor, as you requested, we went searching for other students. The department professor has already rescued some students, so it was easy to bring them over."

Taylor smiled and leaned closer to the black-haired boy who bowed his head, looking at the tiled floor.

He tapped him on the shoulder as the boy raised his head. "You did a good job, but why the worried look?"

The boy quickly looked back down and began stammering. "I’m sorry, senior Taylor, but, w-we couldn’t find Matthew Von Silver... Princess Frieren... or any of the higher-ranked students from any year."

Taylor frowned slightly. "I don’t think that’s a problem."

Beads of sweat appeared on the young man’s freckled face as he darted his gaze nervously. "Well, you see, when we returned, we saw an unusual guy dressed in the combat suit paying tribute to the fallen students."

The group exchanged nervous glances. The problems they had on their plates were already too much and they weren’t sure they could handle any more.

Taylor’s grip tightened suddenly on the boy’s shoulder, the scout flinched, and swallowed hard. "What do you mean by unusual man? Did you confirm his identity? And where is he now?"

"Uhmm... What I meant by unusual was the fact that, well... He was more beautiful than anything I had seen, even among top-ranked idols or girls..."

He fumbled with his fingers. "And that’s not all, the subtle yet terrifying aura he gave off made me freeze in my tracks. He was like a divine being in human form, an untouchable presence wrapped in beautiful clothing."

Reozaki’s eyes widened a little, then he asked, "Did he have purple hair? Or maybe a lighter shade of purple?"

The boy shook his head. "I’m almost certain he had a light shade of pale-lilac."

Taylor turned to Reozaki, a frown playing on his face. "Do you know who he is talking about?"

Reozaki sighed, then looked at Jisoo and Ivy, who seemed unsure about who the boy was referring to.

"I guess you guys won’t know, since he’s more famous in our class. Even so, he did destroy the school building with Matthew a few days ago, and has a large reputation among teachers, I bet he even has a female fan base."

A hint of recognition showed on their faces, then Taylor scoffed. "Do you mean that brat? I guess even weaklings can survive, maybe he felt like he had become something, after Matthew Von Silver went easy on him."

He let out an exasperated sigh. "Commoners and not knowing their place, at least I can now teach him a lesson."

Reozaki stared at him, then looked away. He didn’t say anything and just let Taylor continue. "So where is he now? And what did you find out about him?"

The boy trembled. "I’m certain he is an orange core C-rank. As for his overall strength, I highly doubt he’s just a master. And he’s on his way here—almost the entire scout unit has fallen trying to stop him."

The whole class fell silent at his words. The scouts might not have been the most powerful but they were still elites of Noctis, it made no sense for one person that wasn’t even a high ranker to even attempt fighting all of them.

Jisoo broke the silence first, her chair creaking slightly. "But I thought he was only a master."

Taylor glanced at her briefly then turned back to the boy and said with an oddly calm voice. "What do you mean the scout unit of over ten C-rank and one B-rank members fell at the hands of a single measly C-rank, an orphaned commoner no less?"

The boy’s body shook. "I would never lie to you, young master."

Taylor quickly summoned his golden sword vestige and gestured sharply for the others to follow. "It seems a wasp has begun rearing its stingers."

The group descended the stairs rather quickly, with Ivy staying at the rear since she was a wave controller, Taylor near the front since he was an arbiter, and Eldon leading the group as a tank.

It was a proper and standard formation for students where they stayed in a 1-1-2-1 formation.

Taylor glanced at the group and smirked. ’A mere commoner defeating that many scouts, like I’d believe that.’

He stared at the boy who struggled to stay on his feet. ’This kid better pray that the commoner entertains me.’

The hallway on the third floor was eerily silent, which caused Reozaki to pause. "Doesn’t this seem strange?"

Ivy, who was behind him, also stopped then nodded. "Yes, that’s exactly what I wanted to say. This place feels..."

Ivy’s words died in her throat as she raised her wand, mana flaring within it.

By the time she assessed her surroundings, she noticed that not only she had shifted stance and activated her mana.

The entire team was on high alert, as if a high-level monster had entered the building.

’What the hell was that?’ she thought.

Ivy’s reason for not reacting at all when she heard the boy’s absurd words was because there was a horde of monsters on the ground floor. freёweɓnovel.com

Even though they could have easily dealt with them, they hadn’t, since other mana beasts would avoid this area if they saw more of their kind present.

But... the presence she felt wasn’t from the mana beasts they left on the ground floor.

It was undoubtedly human... but at the same time, it didn’t feel like it. It was soft, yet piercing.

Ivy’s trembling arm rose to her upper lips as she felt blood drip from her nose.

The others were still fine, except for the fact that they were sweating and their stances were prepared for battle.

But for her, someone highly sensitive to mana and raised in isolation due to her inability to be around either corrosive, divine or terrifying mana, it was clear:

Whoever or whatever was coming from that staircase meters ahead was, without a doubt, dangerous.

Eldon sighed, then dismissed his large shield. "You guys are overreacting. What we sensed was probably from outside. Do you really think that..." He paused as the five figures in front of him fidgeted slightly, their eyes widening.

Eldon laughed bitterly, his throat dry. He slowly turned his head as a massive beast with shadow-like fur resembling a bear walked out from the staircase.

After it, however, came a legion of soldiers, numbering over sixty. Their color ranged from energy-like dark blue to light purple, and their form as if absorbing light itself.

As they entered the hall, they all knelt down from left to right and bowed their heads slightly.

The group’s eyes widened, jaws slack, as the darkness in the stairway surged to new heights.

A beautiful, ethereal figure slowly and gracefully walked up the stairs, his steps both gentle and impossibly commanding.

The type of pressure no student should be capable of emitting.

The crystalline wand in Ivy’s hand dropped unnaturally slowly to the ground, as Eldon felt his knee give way.

The boy who had been trembling moments ago ran to the man’s side and knelt, his body glowing faintly blue.

Reozaki couldn’t believe his eyes, the young man walked past them without uttering a single word.

No one in the group could speak as he passed.

Reozaki bit down on his lip. "What do you want us to do?" He didn’t need anyone to tell him.

The only reason someone like him would show off in a time like this was to instill enough fear to ensure they followed every one of his commands.

Kai finally spoke through the gas mask of his combat suit, his silver-lilac hair swaying ever so slightly and his pale lilac eyes glowed with mana, as dark shadows clung to him.

"You know what you have to do. So don’t ask me any questions. You understand, don’t you?"

Ivy, Jisoo, and Reozaki nodded, while Eldon simply stood in awe.

Taylor gritted his teeth. "Don’t give me that crap you fucking piece of shit. What right do you have to order me around? You? A nobody?"

He covered his face with his palm, then opened his mouth, no words came out, only a long bitter, mirthful hollow laugh that cracked through the eerie silence of the hallway. ’What kind of sick joke is the goddess playing on me.’ His eyes narrowed. "Oi commoner, don’t you think it’s quite funny?"

No one in the hall said a word, Taylor then continued. "I hereby command you all in the name of House Karmis—knee!"

’Shit!’ Kai yelled internally, as an unfathomable force began to weigh down on him.
