Chapter 57: Pain

"Why...am I here?" It was a few hours after Kevin left.

He was traveling to the Capital in a carriage with his father since this was only the second time. From next time, Kevin would have to travel on his own. That’s why Aston took the duty to show him the direction and make him remember the landmarks.

Arthur was comforting his mother that everything would be fine, and just as he lay down on the bed to have an afternoon nap...he found himself here—in the cell of Tiamuth.

The fallen Goddess was still tied to the chains and smiled at him, "I didn’t bring you on my own."

"Oh..." Arthur responded as he drew closer to the Goddess, "Then...who?"

"It was me, child." The voice came from behind.

Arthur didn’t react strongly to her sudden appearance.

Aurelia was someone who could come and go anytime she wanted in this prison. And since he was not blessed by any deities, this surely was the only place where she could talk to him.

"The sudden meeting?" He asked, knowing the deity mustn’t have called him for chitchat.

The Goddess of Fate and Fortune spoke, "There is a danger incoming, aiming for a person who was blessed by me."

Arthur was baffled, "Why did you even bless someone? Do you not realise the consequences of providing too much strength to a single entity?"

The world has a way of balancing itself. Power draws power—just as light casts shadows, the strong inevitably attract the strong. The deeper and more profound one’s blessing, the greater the threats they invite. And in this case, the one who stood in danger... was blessed by none other than the eldest and most powerful of all Goddesses.

It was like a curse covered in a golden wrapper to disguise it as a blessing.

Aurelia, in a heavy voice, relayed, "It was not a mistake. She has to be born and achieve what no one else has ever done. It was her destiny. But now, an unexpected variable has appeared which could endanger her life."

Arthur’s expression turned blank, "And...you want me to protect her?" He asked, his tone carrying the weariness he was feeling at the moment.

Aurelia requested, "There is none of the blessed ones prepared to take this role. And directly influencing them into doing anything is still not possible."

The Divine Decree, or what they say, is the direct message of a deity to their believers. However, to descend into their body, they must have passed a trial set by their patron.

And until now, Arthur hardly believes any of the chosen ones have passed the trials, including his brother.

Arthur heaved a sigh, "What would I attain from saving her?"

"Her support? She is a child who can see fate...so she surely would realize your impact on this world."

Arthur scoffed, "You want me to save a damsel in distress and gain her favor so she could support me? Sounds so...evil."

Aurelia was helpless, "I have nothing else to offer." She looked down, evidently at a loss, "This situation was unexpected. A being has betrayed his fate to target someone close to me."

"No surprise. You have the strongest presence after all." He shrugged.

Aurelia turned toward him, her eyes pleading, "In exchange for saving the Chosen One, I will do whatever I can within my authority."

Arthur hummed before turning toward Tiamuth.

The woman had a casual but slightly mischievous look on her face.

"Might as well ask for divine armament or something?"

Arthur chuckled, "I am not blessed with such a mana core to possess anything divine."

Tiamuth hmm-ed—spiritual magic doesn’t elevate one’s capabilities, but it surely gives them the power to stand against the highest degree of sorcerer.

After a brief pause, Arthur said, "Then how about you liberate Tiamuth?" He asked, and the two ladies had their mouths open in shock.

...this came out of nowhere.

Arthur’s intentions were clear—Tiamuth was a friend and a Goddess he was devoted to. If he can, then he surely will try to liberate her.

But, as he expected, "This is not something I alone could do. Tiamuth has betrayed the heavens and gone against the Divine Rule. She helped someone who was against the World Order, believing he would help her bring justice to the Titans."

She recited the whole thing in a brief summary.

The discord between the new gods and the Titan Gods marked the beginning. Then came the rise of Argrouth, followed by Tiamuth’s desperate attempt to support him, seeking justice for herself and her fallen comrades.

To stand against all deities, even defying the God Father himself, took strength and courage that made the heavens tremble. And in the end, for her defiance, she was imprisoned here for eternity.

So, Aurelia’s words didn’t sound like a lie. It was clear—she couldn’t possibly liberate the fallen Goddess on her own.

Heaving a sigh, he asked, "Then can you do something about these chains? She surely still wouldn’t be able to leave with or without those chains, right?"

"I don’t know what you are thinking, kid, but unlike humans, my physical form doesn’t feel pain." The Queen of Spirits voiced.

Arthur turned to look at her, and he shrugged, "I feel restless seeing you like this. This is more for myself."

Tiamuth was...momentarily taken aback.

He was wasting his wish to get her arms some rest...she didn’t know how she should feel about it.

Aurelia nodded, "I can do that. However, Tiamuth, don’t go overboard. They will notice if you suddenly start to influence the lower lands."

"Why would I need to connect with the lower world? My apostle is enough to flip the world upside down." novelbuddy.cσ๓

Aurelia grimaced as she approached the chained Goddess and touched the pillars one after another.

The pillars started to turn into golden dust, but Tiamuth didn’t move her arms at once.

"What happened?" Arthur asked only to get a shake of her head.

She slowly brought her hand down, only to bring it up again.

Arthur helplessly smiled, "They hurt, right?"

Tiamuth’s face grew red in embarrassment, but the pain was so violent that she couldn’t hide it.

"You got any balm or something?" Arthur asked as he approached his Goddess and invited her to sit down

Aurelia...was stunned, but she still snapped her fingers, and a brown jar appeared before the boy.

Seeing him tenderly massaging her arms and witnessing tears in Tiamuth’s eyes as she groaned, Aurelia felt a mixed feeling in her chest.

A god and their believer growing close has always been a sign of disaster. Excessive devotion could lead to insanity, as she has seen in the past. That’s why she always advises the others to always maintain a distance from their Chosen Ones.

However, here, the Goddess never asked for attention, but Arthur was devoted to her.

But this devotion was not usual. He didn’t see her the way other believers do.

There was fondness in his eyes as if he were tending to a comrade, a friend.

...and that, scared Aurelia.

’The only relation that surpasses devotion is love...I hope things don’t turn out that way or...’

Arthur kept massaging her delicate arms to reenergize them.

Her arms were cold, devoid of blood flow, and it was hurting to no end.

"Just a few more minutes and you will feel them again." He assured her as he surrounded her thin arm between his thumbs and index fingers of both hands, creating a tight lock before pulling it down, and making her groan, but in relief.

Tears have stopped flowing out as she slowly felt better.

At some point, she believed she was numb to pain, and she would endure the imprisonment until the end of the world.

However, she was wrong. She was still vulnerable to pain. Agh!

Aurelia slowly approached the duo and softly asked, "Should I assume that you will rescue my devotee?" She fulfilled the wish he asked for, after all. And despite how trivial it appears, Aurelia has challenged the heavens by breaking the shackles of the traitor.

Arthur hummed as he asked, "Where and when?"

"About that...Lily will contact you." She had already relayed the orders to the angel when Arthur was busy healing his Goddess.

Arthur nodded before he told her, "I am not invincible, and the being coming for her surely must have assumed that you would send someone for your devotee’s protection."

Looking up at her coldly, he said, "Don’t complain if I fail."

Aurelia smiled at those words, "I know you won’t disappoint me. I am the record of your struggle and have witnessed your victory. Unless I knew the conclusion, I wouldn’t have approached you."

Arthur sighed, "Since you know what is about to happen, just tell me and make things easier?"

Aurelia flashed a child-like grin, "The future is so delicate that even whispering it to the walls might shift the course of action."

Arthur rolled his eyes and, after turning away from her, said, "Well, you fulfilled my wish, so I will do what I can to save your little devotee."

Aurelia fondly smiled, "I knew you would agree."
