Chapter 174: Chapter 174 - Metro tunnel

The early morning sun crept over the horizon, casting a gold hue across the ruined city.

The streets were cracked and silent, shadows long and unsettling.

Yunfeng led the way, his shoulders tense, his hands faintly glowing with heat—ready to burn down anything that dared to step in their path.

Muchen walked a few paces behind, eyes narrowed as he squinted at the world around them.

"Why is it so empty..." he murmured under his breath, hand instinctively brushing the handle of the pistol strapped to his side. He glanced around, his unease growing. "Where do the zombies go at night?"

He couldn’t stop thinking about that one zombie—the one in the stairwell. It had opened a door like it remembered how to. That wasn’t normal. That wasn’t mindless.

Some of these things—they were still thinking.

Still remembering.

Maybe even learning.

Muchen’s grip on the gun tightened.

Yunfeng was quiet ahead, his boots tapping over loose gravel. He walked like he didn’t fear anything, but inside his mind, thoughts buzzed.

"Why did you agree to that psycho back there?" Muchen asked suddenly, breaking the silence. "You could’ve taken him down. Easily."

Yunfeng slowed, glanced back with a frown. "I still don’t have control over my strength. If I went for him, he might’ve cut Hana. I couldn’t take that risk."

He looked away, guilt tightening his jaw.

"...And," he added quieter, "I’m not confident in my shooting."

Guns in the future were better than this, they were light weight and were much user friendly. Just a flick of the wrist and they’d aim for you. They were fast, quiet, and smart. He didn’t even need actual aiming skills to take down a target.

But These old things? Loud, clunky, heavy as bricks. Not to mention half the time you don’t even know if the safety’s on. Why does everything here have so many buttons?!

He gazed back at the machine gun Muchen was carrying with his eyes squinted. "I’m not skilled enough."

Muchen looked at him like he’d grown two heads. "Seriously? Its very easy. You take aim and shoot. Haven’t you played video games? Its just like that."

Yunfeng muttered under his breath, "Not with these prehistoric relics are shit to use."

"What?"

"Nothing."

Muchen rolled his eyes, catching up.

Yunfeng gave him a side-eye. "You were amazing though. Where’d you learn that?"

Muchen puffed up slightly. "Training for an action film. I didn’t want a stunt double for the gun scenes, so I trained with an actual special ops guy. Learned everything—rifles, handguns, even a little knife combat."

Yunfeng stopped walking. He stared back at him.

Muchen froze at his weird smoldering gaze. Those brown eyes turned a cool shade of blue green and the scent of oranges became so sweet and tantalizing that it made him salivate. "w-what... what are you looking at?"

His lover suddenly walked close.

"what.. what is it?" Muchen stumbled back leaning against a lamppost.

"...I find you so sexy right now," Yunfeng mumbled under his breath. His breath coming out in soft pants. "Like. So sexy. I want to pin you to the side of that lamppost and just—"

"Yunfeng!" Muchen’s face went bright red as he cupped his offending mouth shut. "We...we are in the middle of a road, darn it! Surrounded by zombies!"

"Then I cant kiss you...strip you naked and fuck you right here, right now. Can’t I?" Yunfeng whispered with a pitiful look on his face.

He just gaped at him. "You.... You’re so lewd."

"And you love it," Yunfeng grinned, then suddenly dropped the playful tone, scanning ahead.

They reached a split in the road—three paths. One leading to the city square, another toward the old metro tunnels, and the last snaking through the abandoned warehouse lines.

Muchen looked at him expectantly.

Yunfeng pointed. "Let’s go toward the metro. Fewer buildings above us. Less chance of something dropping down."

Muchen nodded. "Yeah, that makes sense. Let’s avoid rooftops."

They descended into the cracked pavement of the metro entrance, where everything grew dim and quiet again. The light above flickered—barely alive.

Just as Yunfeng was about to step into the mouth of the old metro, Muchen grabbed his wrist tightly, halting him.

"Wait," Muchen whispered, his brows furrowed, nostrils flaring. "Something’s wrong... do you smell that?"

Yunfeng paused. Now that Muchen pointed it out—the scent hit him like a punch to the gut. It was thick and putrid. A rancid blend of blood, mold, and something else... something unnatural.

"Can we take a detour?" Muchen asked again, voice quiet but urgent.

"This path’s the fastest," Yunfeng replied, glancing down the dark corridor ahead. "It cuts straight to the inner city. If we loop around, we risk crossing the zoo grounds again."

"I don’t have a good feeling about this..."

Before Yunfeng could answer, the air behind them shifted. The faint crunch of rubble... followed by a low growl.

Then another.

Then dozens.

"Shit." Yunfeng’s head whipped back, eyes narrowing as the sounds grew louder—faster. They were being hunted.

"They must’ve heard us!" he hissed, yanking Muchen’s arm. "Come on!"

"No—wait, Yunfeng, not in there!" Muchen cried out, panic blooming in his chest. But they didn’t have time to argue. The horde was nearly on them.

Yunfeng pulled him forcefully into the tunnel.

The moment they crossed the threshold, the world changed. It was like stepping into the mouth of a beast. Pitch black. The kind of darkness that pressed on your lungs and swallowed sound.

They couldn’t see a thing.

"I don’t feel good..." Muchen’s voice trembled. His grip on Yunfeng’s hand tightened to a near-painful degree.

And underfoot—the ground grew slick.

Muchen stumbled slightly and let out a quiet gasp. "There’s water... my shoes are soaked..."

Slosh.

Slosh.

The cold seeped into their clothes as the water rose up to their ankles. Then their calves. It was thick and smelled wrong.

Not just muddy rainwater—this water had soaked in rot and decay.

Something had died here. Many somethings.

Yunfeng cursed under his breath, trying to light a small flame in his palm, but the moisture in the air made it fizzle weakly. A faint orange glow lit their faces, just enough to show Muchen’s pale expression and the fear swimming in his eyes.

"Yunfeng..." Muchen whispered, voice nearly cracking. "I think there’s something in the water."

Yunfeng froze.

Then—

A ripple.

Just ahead.

Then another.

Then something brushed Muchen’s leg.

He let out a sharp gasp and jumped up, clinging onto Yunfeng.

"It touched me—something touched me!"

"Stay calm," Yunfeng hissed, raising his hand higher, trying to illuminate more of their surroundings. But the flickering glow only made the shadows dance more menacingly around them.

Suddenly, from behind, the sound of footsteps splashing into water—fast, hard, hungry.

They were being chased into the dark.

"Run!" Yunfeng shouted, carrying Muchen and charged deeper into the tunnel.

Water splashed violently with each step, the current now rising to their knees.

The horde was right behind them, growls echoing louder, sharper.

Muchen slipping once, catching himself against Yunfeng’s back. "We’re going the wrong way!" he cried. "We should’ve never come in—"

"I know! But it’s too late now!"

Just ahead, a flicker of light—barely visible, like the end of a tunnel. A faint green glow.

"I...I see an exit!" Yunfeng shouted, voice breaking.

But behind them, the water moved again—this time not from zombies.

A giant shadow slid beneath the surface, something far too big to be human. Something that swam.

Muchen heard it too. His breath hitched. "Yunfeng... something’s coming."
