Chapter 123: Chapter 123: Can you hear me?

The nurse’s answer left a wide smile across everyone’s face, especially Zenith who felt as if the knot of anxiety cramped inside his chest had eased a bit. He hurriedly approached the nurse before asking, "Does that mean...she’s out of danger now?"

"Well, logically speaking, the answer isn’t completely positive." Her jovial expression tainted a little as she responded in a somber tone, "She just had a life-threatening surgery in a poor-conditioned hospital, with that worn-out body, and...I am sure you must have heard from the doctor already that her health won’t be perfectly rejuvenated, no matter how hard we try. The damage is already done.

"However, her willpower seemed to be the miracle that worked in her favor and helped to retrieve her senses. She isn’t fully awake yet, but her consciousness is returning and it is a positive side. If she manages to keep up with the medicines prescribed by us, she might be able to sustain good health as long as she can. But honestly, that can be a little expensive." freewebnøvel.com

"Don’t worry about the cost of medicines, feel free to prescribe anything you need and I will bear every charge. I am willing to go as far as possible if it means to aid her in speedy recovery..." Zenith answered her earnestly, and his tone depicted that he meant every word that he spoke.

Hearing him, Barnes also stepped closer and nodded to the doctor as he spoke, "Please make sure to hand me a copy of the prescription list. I will take care of everything just as Young Master said, so you can please focus on helping her recover as much as possible."

The nurse blankly stared at both the giant determined men with a smile of gratitude in her eyes, as if she was deeply moved by the generosity they were showing towards someone as helpless as Marita. After keeping a brief pause, she asked Zenith in a polite voice, "Do you perhaps want to meet her now?"

"Yes, I do...but..." Zenith averted his gaze towards Granny Elma who was overwhelmingly emotional after hearing about Marita gaining her consciousness back. Meeting her tearful eyes, Zenith humbly answered, "As the elder one here among us, she should be the one to meet her first, not me—"

"It’s alright, son."

Interrupting his words, Granny Elma walked closer and patted Zenith on his broad back shoulder, smiling with tears filled with gratitude towards him. "Compared to what you have selflessly done for us, you’re the angel who deserves to meet her first, boy. Also, I feel Mari should also see you...however, I will keep my word in never telling her in detail regarding what you did for her sake."

Getting her permission and warm appreciation, Zenith smiled widely beneath his mask as he first walked inside the cabin right after the nurse. Watching Marita’s pale body lying on that hospital bed made him feel perturbed inside, as he couldn’t help but wonder about Kylian who didn’t have the slightest hunch of the turbulences happening in his beloved mother’s life.

He moved closer to stand next to Marita, while keenly gazing at her in concern. Checking on the monitor, he found her vitals were a little stable and they had removed the oxygen mask from her mouth, as if finally she was able to breathe on her own, thanks to the special facility of the hospital.

"K...y...le..."

A soft faint murmur from her lips winced Zenith badly as she could feel Marita slowly trying to lift her hand which had an IV cannula inserted in her vein up from the bed, as if she had already sensed his presence there.

Worried that she might hurt her hand in moving too much which may clot blood, Zenith quickly grabbed her warm soft hand within his grasp as he took the seat next to her bed.

Sensing his cold palms that held her gently, Marita opened her eyes with a drop of tear sliding down the corner of her left eye. She blinked a few more times as if to clear her blurred vision, but when she met Zenith’s face covered with a mask and a black cap, her lips quivered, "Y...You are...not...my...Kyle..."

"Yes, I am not him, but...thank you for finally waking up, Ma’am." Zenith intentionally deepened his voice, fearing that Marita would recognize his voice here when they had already spoken on the phone before.

Without showing any intent to let her know about his real identity, he still tried to console her, "And you shouldn’t move your hand now, Ma’am. It might cause blood clot—"

"Y...Your eyes..."

Before Zenith could finish speaking, suddenly her faltering mumble paused him, as he noticed even through her drowsy vision, Marita was keenly staring into his pitch-black orbs.

A little confused by her words while he paused for a second, she answered first with a serene smile on her trembling lips, "Your e-eyes...they remind me of...someone... That person...was...very special to me... I...could never see that person again...but your eyes...they bear an uncanny similar resemblance...It made me...happy..."

Zenith winced at her unexpected sentence, as he couldn’t stop staring at her with his rolled dark eyes. Deep inside him, he could sense a surge of mixed emotions, that rendered him speechless for a while.

While growing up, everyone around Zenith complimented him that he was the exact version of his father in looks, which somehow made him feel low whenever he heard it. Deep inside his innocent heart, he rather wanted to bear the resemblance with his mother Zorina, but unfortunately, he only bore the exact same beautiful onyx eyes, just like her.

Despite no one noticing that minor resemblance, Zenith was happy to obtain something in genes that always reminded him of his mother. But after she committed suicide, Zenith couldn’t bear to look at his own reflection for months, as he couldn’t accept the loss of that one person who meant the whole world to him.

But today, suddenly hearing Marita had noticed the only resemblance he had obtained from his Zorina, Zenith couldn’t stop himself from feeling emotional. He stayed still, with a thought that pondered in his mind, ’Mom...finally someone noticed my most precious resemblance with you. Can you hear me from above there?’
