Chapter 169: A beautiful day

"And.. We’re done!" Coco exclaimed, dropping the last yellow citrus fruit inside the basket.

"Wow! We harvested a lot today!" Lala giggled and stared at the fruits, her eyes twinkling with delight and excitement as she patted one of the fruit’s flesh.

Coco could only smile at the garden fairy’s enthusiasm, agreeing silently to her statement, and put the basket’s lid back to its respectful place as she hummed softly to herself— pleased that she finished harvesting today’s batch without a problem.

"We don’t have to bring back any fruit tomorrow." Coco told Lala as she slipped the basket’s strap on her shoulders and let it snap into place.

"Why?" Lala didn’t miss a second to ask and puffed her cheeks out, "So, you would not have anything to sell tomorrow? Fruits? Meat? Vegetables? Anything? You won’t get any money?"

Coco laughed nervously and watched as Lala grasped her hair, tugging on her red locks.

The garden fairy started to fly around, back and forth. "What would be my use then? Am I getting replaced because I’m getting useless—"

"Lala, no." Coco sighed out and shook her head, "How many times do I have to tell you that I won’t be replacing anyone? Especially not you, dumdum. You’re my precious and lovely Lala, right?" freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

"Ye.. Yeah.." Lala’s face flushed with color as she placed her palms over her cheeks, "I’m Coco’s Lala."

Coco smiled at the gesture and walked over to the egg, placed comfortably on Coco’s robe in the sunlight, bathing under the sun and looking like it was enjoying the warmth against its shell.

"That’s right." Coco agreed and crouched down, "I’m Lala’s Coco and you’re my Lala, and this little white fella? It will be the new addition to our little circle of loved ones."

"So, you really won’t replace me?" Lala asked for the nth time, flying over to Coco’s shoulder to peer down on the egg.

"No, I won’t." Coco answered the question and assured the fairy for the nth time, smiling softly when she felt Lala perch herself on her shoulder.

Then, Coco proceeded to gently pick up the egg and pick the green robe off the ground.

She stored the robe inside of her personal inventory and watched as an icon similar to her robe appeared in one of the slots, making her smile blissfully making the corner of her eyes crinkle slightly.

"Let’s go back to the village." Coco called out to the fairy, her right foot taking a step forward as she started her departure through the forest to go back to the Yogusho Village.

On her way to the village, she made sure to embrace the egg close to her chest and talk to it as if it was a human being, telling the egg bedtime stories and singing it a couple of nursery rhymes.

The egg would respond with a little shake and Coco would savor it to the bone.

"And on his farm he had some pigs." Coco continued to sing and continued to make her way through the forest, "Ee i ee i o—"

"Is that you, Coco?"

Coco was completely focused on the egg in her hands as she sang to her heart’s content, its beauty and mystery captivating her attention.

However, her moment of peace was shattered by a familiar voice calling her name, the deep, gravelly sound a complete opposite to the soft glow of the egg, making her ears perked up and her eyes widening in surprise.

Her grip tightened around the egg for a moment as she quickly tried to hide it from view.

She managed to hide it in her inventory before the person who had called out saw the egg, her movements fast and fluid, the magical ball vanishing from sight in the blink of an eye.

Then, her head snapped towards the direction of the voice, her eyes scanning the area, her expression guarded.

When her eyes landed on the person who called her, the scarred man was instantly recognizable to her his features distinguished by familiar numerous scars.

He was holding a basket filled with various herbs and other plant materials, their leaves bright and vibrant.

The man was walking towards her, a look of confusion and suspicion on his eyes, but it was replaced with a soft smile, his dark eyes shining when he saw the woman, recognition clear in his gaze.

"Jonathan!" Coco gasped audibly.

Despite the scars on his face, the familiar scarred man was smiling, the corners of his eyes crinkling in happiness.

The man ignored the way Coco’s expression changed.

When she recognized Jonathan and saw his kind smile, her initial guarded expression softened and melted away, replaced by a warm smile of her own.

The tension she had felt from almost being found with the magical egg melted away, the sight of her friend filling her with warmth and joy— her eyes lit up when she recognized him.

He saw how she hid something from him, but didn’t comment on it.

Especially when the woman’s expression of wariness shifted instantly to one of happiness as she realized who he was.

It was clear that she was relieved that it was him by the way the tension in her muscles lessened, the stiffness in her shoulders relaxing as she realized she was in the presence of a friend.

Jonathan swallowed, he was sure that he felt a murderous intent earlier when Coco turned to him.

Maybe I’m just imagining things? He thought, lifting a hand to wave at Coco when she stepped forward, lifting her hand in a small wave.

"It really is a beautiful day!" Coco beamed at Jonathan, "I didn’t know that I’ll bump into you outside the village."

Jonathan reached Coco’s spot and the two of them wordlessly fell into a slow pace as they walked side by side, completely fine to walk back together.

"Well, just like you said, it is a beautiful day so I decided to pick some herbs."
