Chapter 144: Learning new things [2]

"What’s so funny?"

Renaldo has been laughing under his breath for a good minute and it’s making Coco confused.

Did she say something funny?

Renaldo shook his head, coughing out as his laughter died down slowly. "Nothing.. Nothing.. It was just.. You looked so serious and sincere when you asked me who doesn’t love money because that’s true. Who doesn’t, right?"

"Exactly..?" Coco said, hesitant to agree with his claim even though she said the exact words herself.

"No, no, don’t misunderstand." Renaldo raised a hand and waved it dismissively, "I’m not upset at you. It genuinely made me happy that you’re thinking for a better future for yourself and your husbands."

Coco blinked. "That’s it?"

She raised an eyebrow at him and that was enough to make Renaldo assure her with a nod.

"That’s it." He answered with nothing, but honesty, "I was a little upset when you said that you were contemplating going to the main city, only because you were planning to leave us too soon and realized that it was selfish of me to think."

"How is that too soon?" The garden fairy on Coco’s shoulder asked after staying silent throughout the conversation, a frown on her face, "Coco has been staying here for weeks. That’s not too soon."

"How is that too soon?" Coco asked the same question the fairy said, mustering every fiber in her being to make her tone as curious as possible so she wouldn’t upset anyone.

"I think it was too soon for him because you made him love you, Coco." Jacques said, alarming Renaldo and Coco.

The two of them snapped their heads to look at the pink haired woman who was standing by the kitchen’s doorway, a wooden spatula in her hand with a magnificent apron above her clothing.

"My wife." Renaldo spoke up, a look of relief in his eyes when he realized that the person who spoke was just Jacques, "Is dinner done?"

"No, not yet, but it’s almost done." Jacques hummed out with a smile, "Sorry for eavesdropping. The conversation was just too interesting for me to not eavesdrop. I just had to take the chance to let Coco know how much we’re fond of her, you know?"

"Wait, hold on! What did you just say?" Coco finally comprehended what Jacques said earlier and turned back to Renaldo, her eyes wide.

"Yes, Coco." Jacques answered Coco’s question with an amused laugh, "My husband and I love you. You’re our friend— the first and genuine one we have ever had since we got married."

"Oh my fucking goodness!" Coco gasped as she sprung up from her seat, "I didn’t know that you two would be the first one to say that you love me! I thought I have to express it first and let the two of you know that I’m sincere about you two being my friends!"

Renaldo chuckled again, "I think you expressed it more than enough, my friend."

"Aww! Renaldo!" Coco mused and felt like she could melt right on her spot, "How can such a big and tough man like you be this adorable? How cute!"

Jacques laughed and shook her head. "Do you believe me now, my love? Didn’t I tell you that you’re cute despite not looking like other mediators out there? You’re still an attractive mediator for my eyes."

Once again, Coco’s eyes went as wide as saucers, a gasp escaping her lips as she stared at Renaldo.

"You’re a mediator?!" Coco exclaimed, the shock in her face and voice evident as she pointed an accusing finger at Renaldo.

Suddenly, a wooden spatula flew towards her and hit her square in the head.

"Ow!" Coco cried out of pain, rubbing the throbbing spot of where she got hit and looked down to see what had hit her, "What the heck? Why did you do that, Jacques?"

Coco whined and crouched down, picking up the spatula off the floor and stood up, walking towards the pink haired woman who was glaring daggers at her and handed her the spatula.

"What kind of question was that? Wasn’t it obvious that Renaldo was my lovely and adorable mediator?" Jacques asked with a huff, the glare only getting more menacing.

".. It was obvious!" Coco stammered out, laughing nervously.

"Why ask the stupid question then?"

"It was a joke! Only a joke! I knew from the start that Renaldo is the mediator of the relationship!" Coco exclaimed, taking a step back from the angered wife and putting distance between them.

"She said that it was just a joke, wife." Renaldo spoke up and decided to help his friend from his wife’s wrath, "Don’t worry. I knew she was joking."

Waaah! I’m so sorry, Renaldo! Coco cried mentally as she watched Renaldo grab Jacques’ shoulders and lead him to the kitchen, shooting Coco a reassuring glance before they disappeared through the doorway.

She immediately went back to her seat, her posture stiff and straight as she beat herself up at the back of her mind.

How could she think that Jacques was the mediator?! She should have known better! She shouldn’t have just gone ahead and assumed that Jacques was the mediator! How could she?!

Coco felt like punching herself in the face and she was about to, she had her hand balled into a fist and raised in the air, aiming for her face, but a familiar voice called out.

"What are you doing?"

Coco flinched in her seat and she was quick to put her arm down to her side. "Nothing. I’m not doing anything. Trust me, I was merely imagining myself eating Jacques cooking."

"By aiming a fist on your face?"

"Yes, Kairo." Coco deadpanned towards the mediator and huffed, "What else would I be doing?"

"I don’t know.. Maybe trying to slap yourself from embarrassing yourself in front of your friends? I would, too, if I were you." Kairo said and shrugged his shoulders.

"I was learning new things!" Coco retorted back, trying to save her honor.
