Chapter 143: Learning new things

"What took you so long inside the bathroom?" Renaldo asked when Coco emerged from the doorway.

"Was sorting things out." Coco answered, a small smile creeping to her lips as she settled on the opposite couch and sitting right on the opposite of her friend.

"Sort things out? In the bathroom?" Renaldo raised an eyebrow for a quick second, but didn’t question Coco further and instead, smiled at her, "Anyway, my wife is still cooking and I’m done cutting the vegetables. Why don’t we play chess to pass the time?"

Coco hummed and thought about it for a moment before she shook her head. "I don’t want to. Chess gets boring if I play it too often."

"Oh." Renaldo mumbled and frowned, "Well? What do you want to do?"

Coco raised a hand and rubbed the back of her neck as she smiled sheepishly towards the tough looking man, "I have some questions.. Can you answer them?" freēnovelkiss.com

".. What kind of questions?" Renaldo’s face twisted into a confused one with a mixture of skepticism.

"Not hard ones." Coco blinked and leaned back on the chair, "First of all, how many villages does this part of the forest have? I already know about Yolo Village.. Is there another one?"

Renaldo stared at her with a ’are you serious?’ look while raising an eyebrow, but then, a look of surprise crossed his face when he realized that Coco was indeed serious and sincere about her question.

"Oh, dear.." Renaldo mumbled and blinked owlishly, "How did you manage to settle down in this village if you’re not sure of the layout of the area? What’s worse, you go out there everyday to hunt down those monsters and come back— how do you manage to come back alive?"

The look of horror in his face made Coco want to laugh with a matching slap on her knee, but she knows that Renaldo will flip out if she tries to do so.

So, she held it back and cleared her throat.

"I.. Just followed the path back to the village? Haha.." Coco tried to smooth things over with a forced laugh, but she was quick to shut her mouth when Renaldo threw a glare her way.

"That’s not something you should be laughing at." Renaldo said, the look on his face was enough to make Coco nod her head fervently.

"Yes, sir." She responded, her body growing stiff and straightening.

Renaldo stared at her for a few seconds before he looked away and shook his head. "Yogusho Village is the farthest Village out of the three villages in the Jire Forest."

"While it is the farthest one, it’s also the only one with spawn stones around which made the Yogusho Village known as the Monster Village where hunters were born and raised." The man stated, staring ahead of him and at the hanging painting on the wall.

"Wow.. That’s a fancy name." Coco commented, her eyes widening slightly in surprise.

"No, not really." Renaldo disagreed almost immediately, "The village couldn’t live up to its name because the hunters started to go to the main city and refused to catch monsters anymore."

"What?" Coco’s eyebrows furrowed as she frowned, "What’s the point of being a hunter then?"

"Hunters get themselves licensed in the main city and get hired by nobilities since they can use weapons." Renaldo answered Coco’s question with a sigh that sounded similar to disappointment.

"Nobles pay hunters with large amounts of gold coins which they can’t get easily if they are stuck with killing monsters." Renaldo added to his previous statement and glanced at Coco, "They earn more than we earn in this village."

"Really? How much then?" Coco asked, curious about the amount of money she could get from getting hired.

"Yes, really." Renaldo started as he looked away, "We earn almost two hundred gold coins everyday because you bring back freshly hunted monsters, but if you get hired, you could get five thousand gold coins in just three days without having to hunt monsters."

"What do those hunters do?" Coco asked once more and tilted her head.

"They protect the nobles from other.. People.. And monsters." Renaldo said, his voice dripping with uncertainty, "Noble children get targeted a lot which makes hunters a good candidate to hire as guards."

"Guards that were born and raised in the main city aren’t well trained unlike the hunters that were raised in villages. However, even if that was the case, most hunters get accepted in the castle as guards." Renaldo sighed deeply and shook his head.

"Bruh." Coco couldn’t stop herself deadpanning and raised a hand to face palm herself, "So, I could get thousands if I go to the city? But what would be the point of being a hunter if I have to protect them?"

Her questions were pointed to herself.

She tried imagining herself protecting someone else other than herself, but the scenario that flashed in her mind left her shuddering, the gruesome sight making her want to punch herself.

"I think I prefer hunting by myself." Coco murmured, dragging a hand across her face.

".. You were contemplating going to the main city just now, weren’t you?" Renaldo inquired, an underlying tone in his voice.

It made Coco snap her head up and look at him, just in time to see a look of betrayal in his eyes before it vanished.

Oh. Coco blinked and stared at the man, realization hitting her like a brick getting thrown in her head. Renaldo cares so he’s hurt at the thought of me leaving.

"To be honest? Yes, I was." Coco answered bluntly, going straight to the point.

What’s the use of lying anyway?

"Only because I want to pay my debt faster and give my husbands a better life they deserve— I also just want to earn money because, well, let’s be honest, who doesn’t love money?" Coco asked, raising an eyebrow.

Renaldo only stared at her with bewilderment, then a smile creeped into his face as he started chuckling.
