Chapter 137: Chocolate sandwich

Lunch rolled in before anyone could notice, with Coco’s and Rey’s stomach rumbling telling them that they needed a break from playing in the river, Coco called the little boy.

"Come on, Rey! It’s time to take a break!" Coco said, raising her voice and holding her hand out towards him.

"Okay! Wait, let me just take these pebbles!" Rey responded as he sank down on the water and picked up the pebbles under the water.

Coco walked towards him, the water in her legs splashing all over the place as she did so, and leaned down to see the small rocks the little boy had in his arms, shining and twinkling under the sunlight.

"Are those really pebbles?" Coco asked, staring at the shining surfaces with curiosity.

"Well, no, not really." Rey said as he stood up and made his height stand out with the water reaching his hips, "These are the stones used to make low quality magic stones. Can you see the glow of each stone? Look, this one is red."

Coco looked down and squinted her eyes, focusing her gaze on the pebble that Rey lifted.

True to his words, the surface of the small rock glowed slightly and showed that it has a spec of color red in the middle, making Coco gasp in amazement.

It was there, but barely.

"That’s fascinating!" Coco exclaimed with an excited grin on her face, "Is this how some of the magic stones can be found? By rivers?"

Rey blinked and a look of pondering crossed his face for a moment as he thought about it, but then, he shook his head and smiled at her, "No, I heard from my tutor that magic stones get washed up in rivers because it originally started from a cave filled with mana."

"Woah.. I haven’t asked this before because I wasn’t interested, but it was nice to learn new things." Coco mumbled under her breath, staring at the pebble in wonder.

"I’m happy to help!" Rey smiled wider and started walking towards the riverbank, "Let’s go! I’m famished!"

"Okay, let’s go!" Coco laughed and followed behind him.

When they reached the picnic blanket, the atmosphere was thick with awkward silence and tension, making the two look at each other.

Coco looked away first and smiled at Jacques. "Can we have something? We’re hungry."

Coco hoped that her words would cut through the tension and would lighten up the mood a little, and it did, which made her breathe out a sigh of relief when the pink haired woman smiled at her.

"Sandwich, muffin, or banana bread? Which one would you like to have?" Jacques asked, opening the picnic basket.

"Can I have a muffin and a sandwich?" Rey crouched down and placed the pebbles down by the edge of the blanket, being careful to not let any of the water drop on the fabric since he was dripping with river water.

"Chocolate or egg? We have two kinds of sandwiches packed up, sweetie." Jacques told the little boy, her voice dripping with honey as if she wasn’t mad at Kairo just a few moments ago.

"Oh.. Then I’ll have chocolate." Rey brightened up and beamed at Jacques.

Jacques hummed and pulled out a triangle shaped sandwich wrapped in baking paper, handing it over to the little boy.

"Young master, chocolate is not good for you." Kairo started and snatched the chocolate sandwich from the little boy’s hand before he could get the chance to open it, "You’re a child of Earl Hilandro. Please don’t forget all the lessons you received."

Coco’s body moved on its own, her hand reaching out and snatching the sandwich out of Kairo’s hand in a swift motion.

"You—" Kairo growled, but stopped when Coco simply handed the sandwich to the little boy and pushed him behind her, "He can’t have chocolates! It’s not befitting of a noble’s child to have something as low quality as that—"

Once again, he was cut off.

Coco glared at him and threw a quick light jab on his side, making him double over.

Coco smiled and turned around to face Rey. "Don’t mind him. You can have the chocolate sandwich, okay? In fact, if you want all the chocolate sandwich we packed in the basket, then you can have them all for yourself." ƒrēenovelkiss.com

"Are you sure—"

"Coco’s right, Rey." Jacques cut the little boy’s nervousness with a simple agreement, "You can have the chocolate sandwiches if you want."

"But I want one— ack!" Renaldo spoke up, but doubled over and groaned in pain, "Right, right, right.. You can have it.."

Jacques had elbowed her husband.

"Thank you!" Rey expressed his gratitude and smiled brightly, staring down at the sandwich and opening it at a speed that made them laugh.

"Young master, you can’t eat such low quality— ugh!" Kairo groaned out of pain once more when Jacques chucked a wooden spoon his way and hit him squarely in the head, making him hold the spot that received the hit.

"He should just keep his mouth shut so we can all have a good time." Lala grumbled next to Coco’s ear, glaring at the man on the ground.

Coco hummed and turned to Rey, only to gasp in surprise when she saw the tears streaming down his cheeks.

"Rey?! What’s wrong?!" Coco asked almost immediately, alerting the others around them and making them then their attention to him.

Coco started panicking, kneeling down in front of the little boy and her hands hovering in the air, waving aimlessly because she didn’t know if he would be comfortable being touched all of a sudden.

"Young master!" Kairo gasped and scrambled to get up, "I knew that the chocolate wouldn’t suit your—"

"No!" Rey cried out and stopped Kairo from speaking further, "It’s not about the chocolate.. It tastes so good that it’s making me cry, okay? Stop insulting them, Rogue.. They’re good people."

"Young master.." Kairo mumbled.

"Just stop.. Stop being mean to Coco and Jacques."
