My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World-Chapter 193: A Deal Between Sages
Chapter 193: A Deal Between Sages
A few months passed after we returned to the Sephyr Kingdom, and winter was slowly coming to an end, signaling the start of the next school year for the academy.
The princess and I had been staying at End Town with the rest of our group, and as the days for her to return to the academy got closer, my time to fulfill my deal with the headmaster also did.
We teleported to the capital a few days before classes were meant to start and were greeted by Melina’s roommates in their dorm, who hugged the princess with happy tears swelling in their eyes.
’They must have been worried for her...’ I thought with a smile, feeling glad that Melina had friends who cared for her so much.
As the three princesses talked to each other and exchanged stories of what they had been doing the past few months, I made my way out of the room and went to the headmaster’s office.
The same receptionist from last time was there, still holding their unamused expression as they saw me arrive, and without saying a word, opened the doors for me to enter.
’I guess Devon must have told them to let me in...’ I wondered as I stepped inside the office.
Headmaster Devon was already waiting for me, sitting behind his desk with a smile on his face, and asked me to take a seat.
"I hope everything went well," Devon said.
"It did. Thanks for letting Melina get some time off..." I replied, making the old sage chuckle playfully.
"Well, I already told you I don’t have much jurisdiction over what she does since she is a sage and all..." the old man commented.
"Sure, but you are still the headmaster of the academy," I said, keeping the friendly conversation going.
"So, I suppose it’s your turn to honor our deal?" Devon asked.
"That’s why I’m here," I replied confidently.
The old sage laughed, extending his arms to both sides and slamming his desk with joy as he stood up and approached me.
"Then, Professor Ichiro. Welcome to the Sephyr Academy!" Devon exclaimed, shaking my hand with fervor.
The deal that I made with the headmaster back then was simple. He would allow Melina to skip the last few months of lessons, and in return, I would have to teach magic at the academy for one year.
I didn’t think it was a bad offer. On the contrary, I was pretty happy with it since I would be able to spend more time with Melina.
It was only one year, and she would graduate after that, so it’s not like I would have to stay teaching after she graduated.
The headmaster clapped two times, and a group of people barged inside the office with measuring tapes, taking notes on my size and body dimensions as Devon said he would have a suit made for me.
I knew that I couldn’t just arrive and teach wearing my poncho, but I didn’t think I would get a whole suit made just for me. Nonetheless, I was grateful for the gift the old man gave me.
After the servants took my measures, Devon gave me a tour of the entire academy.
In the professor’s lounge, he introduced me to the other faculty members, which gave me a bit of mixed feelings since some of them were friendly while others looked down on me.
There was a man with dark hair named "Topen," who clearly hated me, but when I heard that I had taken his position as the "Magic Theory" teacher, I understood why he was so mad at me.
I mean, it wasn’t my fault that the guy was teaching outdated information, but I could still understand why he was angry.
He had been placed as my assistant for that year, which made me think that the old sage was trying to play a prank or something.
However, when I confronted him about putting a person who hated me as my assistant, the sage expressed that he had done it on purpose as he wanted Topen to also learn from me.
’Ah, I get it now. I’ll only be here for a year, so if the professors can also learn from me, they can keep teaching my lessons after I’m gone...’ I thought.
Now that I knew Devon’s intentions, I accepted to have Topen as my assistant and inquired more about my position and the things I was allowed to do.
I had never worked as a teacher unless I counted the private lessons I gave to Melina, but she literally had an innate talent for magic, so it’s not like I was the reason she was so strong.
Don’t get me wrong. I definitely taught her some cool spells that she wouldn’t have mastered without me, but if she had been allowed to train magic without a tutor before my arrival, her power would have grown much more.
"Well, you are a professor with a title and a sage. Honestly, there isn’t much I can tell you not to do. I trust your judgment as a fellow sage..." Devon said.
"I understand. I won’t do anything rash," I replied, reassuring the man that I simply wanted to do my job correctly.
After I spent a bit more time with the headmaster, drinking tea in his office, I went back to Melina’s dorm but was met with a note saying that she had gone out with her roommates to town.
I found it funny that she left a note, considering I had already replaced our broken voice crystals, and she could send me a message at any time.
Still, leaving these types of notes was the exact same thing that she would do in our past lives. Even when we had phones, and she could simply call me to tell me what she was doing, she would always leave a note.
It was something I found endearing about her, and seeing it again in this new world made me smile and blush like a little kid.
